,SN 1901 hity years ago the Glendale Unxon Hxgh School was formed by the uruon ot seven grammar school d1stncts mto one h1gh school sectton Thrs large area was practxcally open ranch land and there were twenty exght students enrolled the hrst year School opened ln a room tn the old Glendale Hotel whxch later became wxdely known as the Glendale Sanltanum and stood on the present S119 of the News Press The prxncxpal was Llewellyn Evans ass1sted by Mxss Mary Edwards The marvelous developments of the valley brought many changes Soon Burbank wtthdrew to form 1ts own h1gh school d1str1ct Later West Glendale and Troplco were annexed to the Glendale dxstrlct and rivalry started between Glendale and Tropxco over the locatlon of the h1gh school A half dozen Glendale cltxzens bought two and a hall acres on the southeast corner of Brand and Fourth Know Broadwayl and offered lt w1thout cost to the d1str1ct thus end1ng the contest However later on clttzens subscnbed to a fund to repay the srx people Money for a burldmg was the next xtem on the agenda and a bond rssue was voted to erect a two story structure The comerstone was la1d September 13 1902 and the buxldxng completed ready tor use December 2 New developments followed rn quxck successron Durtng the th1rd year George U Moyse came to Glendale as pnnclpal of the h1gh school The hrst bulldmg was outmoded by 1908 and rn September 1909 the new school was taclng on what today IS Harvard Street By 1920 due to the rate of growth m attendance xt was decxded that further addttrons to the 1nst1tut1on would have to be made A commxttee was selected to hnd a locatron for a unlon h1gh chool They recommended purchase of the twenty one acres southeast of Broadway and Verdugo In 1923 contracts were let and work began on the present school The Glendale Hlgh School bu1ld1ng erected at that tune stands today wxth only mxnor addrtxons havmg been made Its occupauon m September 1929 provtded the CIQY of Glendale wlth two hxgh schools as Herbert Hoover Hlgh School had been erected on a slte of twenty acres on Glenwood Road Glendale Htgh now had a compcmlon school to nval and make fnends mth Over theu years of development Glendale I-hgh and Hoover I-hgh have acquxred nch backgrounds and many hne tradltlons 1 1 1 1 ' . 1 . 1 , . 1 1 ' 1 1 1 a u 1 1 1 1 1 . . . . - D - ' 1 . u 1 1 1 .
