Mr. Howard Kay conducted this group, which spent many hours in preparation tor the Christmas Pageant. the operetta SWING BAND The Swing Band at Glendale High has among its activities pertormance at the annual band concert. They played at the Book and Baggage Day dance and were rated tops by all attending. ORCHESTRA Our prize-winning orchestra took honors again this year at the annual music festival. During the past school year. a television show. the orchestra concert. assemblies. two plays, and the operetta comprised a full schedule lor this energetic group under the direction ot Mr. Purcell Mayer. . . Then. aiter being dealt two straight losses at the hands ot the Burbank Bulldogs and the South Pasadena Tigers. came the biggest game ot the year. The crosstown rival, Hoover Tornadoes. barely emerged the victors over the Dynos by a 7-6 score in a thrill packed game. Quarterback Keith Noonan sparked the Nitros. by scoring the lone touchdown. and was the leading ground-qainer by making 89 yards in the ll times he carried the ball. Sparked by the most powertul league back-field aggregation in the forms of Player ol the Year Eddie Farrell and Paul Morley. halibaclrs. all league quarterback Leon Ellis. and lullbacks Alyn Farr and Reubin Martinez, the team smashed each opponent. Begin- ning the pigskin season the Blasters were considered to be merely another Bee Team with a lew potential players. By the end of the season, however. the Blasters had proven their strength and had amassed 205 points as compared to their opponent's 52. ln League play they pommelled their Glenwood rivals to the tune ol 18-7, and in the final game, fullback Alyn Farr almost single-handedly nabbed the loop title as he personally accounted for 29 points. as the Blasters won handily from Covina, 35-6. PLA DA In order to encourage friendly spirit and good sportsmanship the Glendale High School G.A.A. held an inter-school playday February 3, 1949. The schools vying for first place were: Alhambra, Iohn Burroughs, Hoover, Mark Kepple, Montebello, and Glen- dale. Sports events, school yells and songs, and skits were performed under the direction of La Veme Henderson.
