Her attendants were Beverly Nelson and Lois Hart. A crown of Talisman Roses and Gardenias did justice to her beauty. Nancy Kehior and her competent decoration committee transformed the gym into a lovely winter scene complete with snowman, sleigh, and Christmas tree. The romantic atmosphere was typified by the theme, MOONLIGHT SLEIGHRIDE. The Prom was the big event of the year and will long be remembered by all. Page Forty-eight My Blue Heaven proved to be the most beau- tiful dance of the year. Blue lights lent a dim and romantic atmosphere, and silver stars swung idly from the sky. Green arbours and flower bedecked love seats thoroughly capti- vated the lovely scene. The music of Orvilie Triggs was divine, it couldn ' t have been more perfect. The element of suspense was kept up to the very last and to the tune of Stairway to the Stars, one of Glendale ' s loveliest queens, Lucille Rulon, was crowned. An array of lovely ladies were her court, Janice Munson, Esther Haak, Jane Gray, Joanne Rennie, Millie Sells, and Isabel Young. Sackufai ' 4 trance The Backouts of ' 46 was one of the most clever Glendale has ever seen. Sponsored by the Cabinet and under the direction of Glory Smith and Pat Pinkus, it was a real success. The Back- Up dance was lots of fun . . . so different and one met more interesting people that way! Many clever contests ere staged and a climax was reached when the Gay Cabal- lero v as crowned. Glory Smith crowns Ed Tucker, who was voted the Gay Caballero of the year by the feminine popula- tion of Glendale. Ed, upon coronation, rendered You Always Hurt the One You Love, much to the glee of the audience. Page Fifty OttOH-C fd With the capable help of Mr. Milford Brunner, the Sophomores put on their annual Cotton Cord. The decorations were unique in that the walls were hung with old-time billboards, conse- quently the name, Billboard Bounce. The dance drew quite a crowd ,and both refreshments, and music were enjoyed by all. Page Fifty-one flaufhtif itlatietta Marietta - . - - Captain Richard Warington Adah . . . - - Etienne Grande - . . During the football season their assistance in supervising the gates and the field was invaluable, and did much to assist in lessening confusion and in preserving order. At all evening functions of the school a willing group of R. O. T. C. members were present to assist in the parking of cars and in directing traffic. This year Coach Graf ' s team was not only a championship outfit but a C. I. F. contender as well. If nothing else shows his ability as a fine coach and sportsman, this record should. From this great team Coach Graf developed some exceptionally good material for next season ' s squad which may repeat or even improve upon this year ' s performance. Coach Russ Cripe came back to Glendale High after nearly four years in the service just in time to take over the backfield coaching spot and almost to duplicate the trick he did when he sent a Glendale team to the top in C. I. F. EV SCHLiNGER JACK BUTTON PLAYER OF THE YEAR The Dynamiters made a wise choice in picking Jack Button as the team ' s most valuable player. Jack was not only one of the best defensive centers in the history of the school, but he stood out on offense as well. This con be proved by the many passes he intercepted against such powerful aggregations as Alhambra and Loyola. It was partly due to Jack ' s fine defensive playing that Glendale got as far as it did. Jack ' s name will join that of Galloping Glen Swanson on the Kirkhuff Trophy. 1945 VARSITY CAPTAIN Of course the natural choice for the captain of the Nitros was Ev Schlinger. Ev earned his berth as captain by his spectacular playing in practically every game of the season. Intercepting one of Hoover ' s passes and running 60 yards to a touchdown wa s only one of the things that testified to his ability. His catching and Mussacco ' s passing formed an offensive arm which struck terror into the hearts of the Dynamiter ' s opponents. In addition to being an outstanding player, Ev possessed a spirit that kept the rest of the team going many times. I. F. playoffs. The Nitros started the season off poorly by being defeated by the Lions of El Monte in a practice game. The Nitros completely outplayed their opponents, but the breaks were against them. The next week the jinx followed them to Alhambro where they lost to the Moors, but again the score didn ' t show the whole picture. Defeat stared the boys in the face again when they came up against the Aztecs of Mark Kepple. It was the same old story as before; the Nitros rolled up the statistics, but a freakish play spelled defeat. In the League opener against South Pasadena the Dynamiters showed their worth by completely trouncing the Tigers in a passing and running duel. The following week the Nitros carried over their winning ways by passing and run- ning a supposedly powerful Burbank aggregation to death. Flushed with their two previous victories, the Dynamiters coL ' Idn ' t be stopped in the City Championship game against Hoover in the Rose Bowl. In one of the most exciting games of the season the Dynamiters massacred their friendly rivals. The next Friday was a black one in Glendale High, for the team dropped their final League tilt to P. J. C. but went on to meet the Loyola Cubs the following week in the C. I. F. opening playoffs. Glendale showed superiority by making more first downs than Loyola, and by gaining 1 83 yards to the Cubs ' 121. Glendale wound up their season in a real heart breaker. Playing Alhambra in the C. I. F. semi-finals, the Dynamiters lost by a conversion even though they made 186 yards to the Moors ' 145, and ten first downs to their six. This team was Coach Gaines ' second league championsh ' p team in a row in the three years that he has been Bee football mentor. Daddy, as the boys call him, used the fast T formation, and the devastating spread play to mow down the opposition this year. The fighting spirit of the team was Captain Don Wales. He scored a total of 42 points during the season, and as a testimonial to his excellent offensive and defensive playing he received the ball used in the Hoover-Glendale game. Don ' s playing and spirit helped the Blasters out of many tough scrapes which might have blocked their progress towards the league crown. The following week spelled doom for the Nitros when, playing spiritless ball, they fell before their cross- town rivals. Hoover. Still tasting defeat, the Nitros hit the comeback trail two weeks later and downed a fighting Burbank squad in a close game. Entering the second round of League play in third place the iNtros again came up against the fast on- slaught of South Pasadena and fell before it. Out for revenge, the Nitros completely smothered the P. J. C. Bulldogs the following week. The game featured a scoring race between Button and Riach of the Nitros, each of whom scored 18 points. Remembering their previous defeat at the hands of Hoover, the Dynamiters entered the game fighting mad, and downed their opponents in a hard-fought contest. This time Tom Riach was the winning factor by piling up a total of 23 points. With their previous victory still in mind, the Dynamiters took Burbank to the cleaners and secured the number two spot in the League. Tom Riach again held the spotlight in this game by duplicating the 23 points he scored in the Hoover game. Invited to attend the Beverly Hills Tourney along with 16 other schools, the Dynamiters, playing good ball, ended up in fourth place.
