YOUNG man who learned on Saturday morning that his grades had finally been approved for graduation from college that afternoon received the news with great joy, and went straightway to the telegraph office. Because his parents were living at great distance, they would not be able to attend the ceremonies, so he sent them a telegram of only one word: EDUCATED. Little did he realize that the Bachelor of Arts degree was the merest of surface indication of culture. Little did he realize that there are many college graduates who in the deepest sense of the word are less educated than some other serious thinkers who have never entered a college or university. Furthermore, he made the mistake of assuming that education is some- thing that is acquired and something which no one can take away. How often do people hear someone say I am going to college to get an education-that will be something no one can take away from me. While the statement that a man cannot be robbed of his education has been heard so many times that the expression is almost trite, the fact of the matter is that the statement is hardly true. Education is something that no one could ever quite accomplish for it is infinite- there is so much to learn in the world that no one can learn it all. Take, for instance, the English language with its more than 400,000 words, No one can ever hope to come anywhere near learning the meaning of so large a vocabulary. Shakespeare with his tremendous vocabulary for the use of English was never able to use more than 25,000 words. Obviously, the average man whose vocabulary ordinarily does not extend beyond 3,000 to 4,000 words can never expect to have a complete vocabulary. Learning no sooner ceases than forgetting begins, and while it is true that a thing once learned is never entirely forgotten, it is also true that once learned it immediately begins to be forgotten. An eminent psychologist has said that ninety per cent of everything that a man learns is forgotten and that more than one-half of the rest deserves the same fate. ln this light then no one can afford to sit smugly by presuming even for a short while that he is educated. Regardless of how much the students of this class have learned, there is much yet to acquire. Irrespective of how much has been gained, the gain must be regarded as only tentative-as something that will slip away unless it is kept alive and bright through continual effort. Whether our graduates go to college or directly into industry or commerce, may the thirst for self-improvement continue throughout their lives. There is no such thing as standing still- one either goes ahead or falls back. May those of this graduating class be numbered among the people who are marching ahead. ELON EARL HILDRETH
