GEIQDAE ulQu'?cuQT6n H IS keen journalistic sense, the grey hairs which the passing of each year's Explosion staff adds to his head, the careful sugges- tions with which he guides falter- ing students through the mazes of counseling, the quiet way in which he wears himself to a fraz- zle for anyone needing him-be- cause of these things, the l939 Stylus is dedicatedyto Laurence M. Smith. YOUNG man who learned on Saturday morning that his grades had finally been approved for graduation from college that afternoon received the news with great joy, and went straightway to the telegraph office. Because his parents were living at great distance, they would not be able to attend the ceremonies, so he sent them a telegram of only one word: EDUCATED. Little did he realize that the Bachelor of Arts degree was the merest of surface indication of culture. Little did he realize that there are many college graduates who in the deepest sense of the word are less educated than some other serious thinkers who have never entered a college or university. Furthermore, he made the mistake of assuming that education is some- thing that is acquired and something which no one can take away. How often do people hear someone say I am going to college to get an education-that will be something no one can take away from me. While the statement that a man cannot be robbed of his education has been heard so many times that the expression is almost trite, the fact of the matter is that the statement is hardly true. Education is something that no one could ever quite accomplish for it is infinite- there is so much to learn in the world that no one can learn it all. Take, for instance, the English language with its more than 400,000 words, No one can ever hope to come anywhere near learning the meaning of so large a vocabulary. Shakespeare with his tremendous vocabulary for the use of English was never able to use more than 25,000 words. Obviously, the average man whose vocabulary ordinarily does not extend beyond 3,000 to 4,000 words can never expect to have a complete vocabulary. Learning no sooner ceases than forgetting begins, and while it is true that a thing once learned is never entirely forgotten, it is also true that once learned it immediately begins to be forgotten. An eminent psychologist has said that ninety per cent of everything that a man learns is forgotten and that more than one-half of the rest deserves the same fate. ln this light then no one can afford to sit smugly by presuming even for a short while that he is educated. Regardless of how much the students of this class have learned, there is much yet to acquire. Irrespective of how much has been gained, the gain must be regarded as only tentative-as something that will slip away unless it is kept alive and bright through continual effort. Whether our graduates go to college or directly into industry or commerce, may the thirst for self-improvement continue throughout their lives. There is no such thing as standing still- one either goes ahead or falls back. May those of this graduating class be numbered among the people who are marching ahead. ELON EARL HILDRETH MRS. ETHEL HUME FLOOD MOYSE Vice-Principal EDWARD H. KI ENHOLZ Vice-Principal BOARD OF EDUCATION MR. MERRITT P. KIMBALL President DR. WILLARD S. FORD Superintendent of Schools MRS. ROY L. ADAMSON . DR. GEORGE W. BLANCHE Secretary MR. CLENCY H. HASBROUCK MR. 1. MARION wRicHT The pleasant days of high school activities for i938-i939 are recorded in this number of the Stylus. More than two thousand students and faculty have engaged in the strenuous activities of high school lite with the common purpose of acquiring a background of experi- ences which will give the high school students the abilities to succeed in lite. Each of the many activities has had its own interests and its own satisfactions. The written record in this book will, from time to time, serve as a pleasant reminder of high school days. I trust that it will not only serve as a pleasant memory, but will be a continual inspiration to further worthwhile endeavors. WILLARD S. The new legislative branch was created by the constitution in September, providing that it should be com- posed of representatives of the second period classes. Dave Tope was elected to the presidency of the Legislature for the fall semes- ter, and Dean Morris succeeded him in January. The Backward Dance, christened the Corrigan Hop, was well attended by Glendale High School students as well as by guests from Hoover High School and the junior College. Phil Kingman's music supplied the entertainment for the evening, while the prize fox trot was won by Lucille Mittry and Dick Lietch. Refreshments, under the supervision of Margaret Skinner, added the final touch to the evening. OH, GLENDALE HIGH SCH by PAT SALVIO OOL Oh, Glendale High School we sing out your praise, With all our voices and banners upraised. A For to you we pledge our loyalty, And we show superiority. Thy strength and beauty long in our minds will linger Thy friendly spirit, guide us faithfully. Stalwart the sons who justly boast thy fame, Thy daughters fair their love for you acclaim. Teach us thy children, freedom and truth to Glendale, we proudly hail thy honored name. cherish FCDRENSICS lncreased interest and activity in forensics during the l938-39 season has brought signal honors to Glendale debaters and orators. Outstanding was the acquisition of the state championship won at Redlands by john Baird and George Grover with clean sweeps in debate and extempore speech. Also outstanding was the presentation of one of the finest oratorical con- tests in many years. The event was won by Marion Bailey, senior speaker, whose address was The Rise and Fall of Adolph Hitler, while Tom Milburn represented the sophomores and john Baird spoke for the junior class. Glendale High captured two Southern California championships this year when George Grover and john Baird won the coveted debate trophy and George Grover first place in extempore at the University of Southern Cali- fornia interscholastic tournament. Because of their fine showing at this tournament, Glendale's debaters were invited to enter the National Forensic League and to compete in the National Speech Tournament at Beverly Hills for highest honors. This year also marked Glendale's re-entrance into the Southern California Debate and Oratorical League, as well as participation in the League's annual extemporaneous speaking contest. Before the close of the season Glendale will have competed in the National Forensic Tournament at Beverly Hills. On paper it looked like the Nitros would have come through with colors flying. Because of the spirit the squad showed last year and because of the number and strength of returning lettermen, it appeared to pre-season pickers that Glendale might come close to giving a repetition of the l937 triumphs. Starting off with all hands fired for action, the Dynamiters fought out a smashing ll 8-6 victory over Inglewood. This was the first in a series of impressive wins. .lourneying next to Alhambra, the Nitromen encountered some of the toughest competition that they were to meet all season, and by sheer scrappiness eked out a 6-O victory. The next game, played with a very weak South Pasadena squad, proved to be a Roman holiday for the Dynamiters and the score- board read 28-O favoring Glendale when the fireworks ended. Still striving for greater honors, an inspired Glendale High grid machine scalped the Fullerton Indians to the tune of 25-O. But this game was to be followed by the greatest heart-break of the season. Meeting the Whittier Cardinals on our own field, the Nitros trailed the Redbirds for most of the game, and when in the closing moments a touchdown was pushed over, it looked like perhaps victory could be had. The conversion attempt went astray, and as the gun sounded the final canto, a valiant Dynamiter team was pounding on the Cards' goal line, in vain. The final score was Whittier 7, Glendale 6. Only one game remained to be played and that was the annual fracas with Hoover for the city title. This game was won by Glen- dale by virtue of a fumble by our crosstown opponents behind the goal. The scoreboard read 2-O in favor of the Nitromen. Because of their impressive record and because of the valiance they showed in defeat, the Glendale High student body pays tri- bute to Coaches Russ Cripe, Lon Graf, and the Nitro squad. Starting off the season with a bang the Blasters found themselves on the long end of a I2-O score in a practice tiff with Beverly Hills. The first league encounter with the Alhambra Moors ended in a 6-6 tie. The South Pasadena squad proved to be little competition for the Sperrymen, and were worked over to the tune of l2-O. The annual trek to Taft proved to be a sad affair for the Blasters who returned with a I3-l9 defeat. The Fullerton Bees proved to be so closely matched that the Blasters were only able to snare a 6-6 tie. With several stellar players out of the fray, the Blaster machine just lacked the impetus to get going at all, and the Whittier Cards gave them a good shellacking 20-O. The annual Hoover game turned out to be a grudge game with the whole squad vowing to make up for last year's de- feat. The valient Cyclones were subdued by the Blasters in a super hair-raiser ending 7-6. Much credit should be given Coach George Sperry who expects great things from the Bees next year with many lettermen returning. GILBERT CROWE Y Y' CRIMES FOLBRE FRANKLIN TAYLOR WINSHIP CEE FOOTBALL Having a cee football team for the first time in many years, Glendale High presented to the league some new competition last fall. Although their scoring record is not very impressive, much credit must be given the team for the intestinal fortitude they showed throughout a whole season of defeats. The Nitro babes dropped their first fracas with Loyola l5-O and this was followed by a l3-O defeat in the hands of Whit- tier. Although they started strongly in the Fullerton game, they lost 6-ZO. The Hoover Zephyrs annexed both of their tilts l9-O and 25-O. Many plaudits are due Coach Elton Smith for the way he took a squad of green, inexperienced boys and molded them into a team from whom a great deal is expected this fall. Glendale High salutes Coach Smith and our new cee foot- ball team. WEIGHT LIFTING TEAM A new field of endeavor has been initiated into Glendale High athletics. Gaining momentum in popularity all the time, the weight lifting team has gotten a gratifying response from Nitro muscle men. Glendale High is one of the few high schools with an active lifting team and much credit must be given David Dale and Bob Bainbridge for their conscientious efforts in organizing and maintaining an active squad. Although it is sport where the individual counts, meets are held on the team basis and the stan- dard rules and lifts, snatch, press and clean and jerk, are used. The team consisted of the following boys: Eddie Grimes, Bob Bainbridge, David Dale, Austin Johnson and Fred Hyle. More power and continued success to the new Nitro lifting squad. VARSITY BASKETBALL Beating a powerful Whittier Cardinal team, undefeated for three seasons, put Coach Abe Elliott's i939 Varsity Basket- ball team in a tie for second place in league standings. As was the case last year, the casaba crew dropped but three games in half a score of league encounters. The branch rivals up l-loover way took two from us, while Whittier took the other. The Nitros hung up an mipressive list of scores with vic- tories over Alhambra 28-3O and 29-31, by whipping Fullertton 23-32, by clipping the Whittier Redbirds' wings 37-Sl, and by crushing South Pasadena 23-33 and 23-28. ln two of the closest games on record, a Hoover field goal in the final seconds won both games for the cross-town quin- tet. The hairbreadth scores were 3l -29 and 23-2l. Congratulations are in order for Coach Elliott and his team for the display of fine playing and sportsmanship they gave us. '? They gained double victories over Hoover 28-39 and 36-l6, did the same to Whittier 33-67 and 3O-22, repeated wtih South Pasadena, 28-37 and 37-18 and Fullerton also fell before their onslaught l3-43 and 42-Zl. Ably tutored by Coach Abe Elliot this year's season was marked by some ofthe most outstanding individual as well as team playing ever seen. Glendale High congratulates our new Champions. CEE BASKETBALL With a team composed of no returning lettermen and few ex- perienced players, the Glendale Cee Basketball team had a surpris- ingly good record. Under the leadership of Coach Joe Dietsel, the Cees played ten league games, winning four and dropping six. They were beaten twice by Hoover 7-18, 6-8, but came back to trounce Fullerton in two games 20-l2, 25-20. Alhambra had the edge in their two games, and the Cees lost both times 8-l l, lO-Zl. Whittier and Glendale shared in their series with the Redhiras, tak- ing the first game i4-26 and the Cees the next 31-19. ln the next round South Pasadena took the first encounter 4-18 and Glendale the last 26-17. lt is expected that many of this year's lettermen will return next year and that the Cees will have an eventful season. l VARSITY TRACK Although paced all year by Captain Armand Antunez and Bud Humberger, both new record holders, the Dynamiters got no better than number two notch in the League, Hoover taking the crown. Starting off with the traditional Dynamiter bang, the squad showed great all-around power in taking the Fullerton Indians into camp with a score of 97-I7. Ferguson Field at Hoover Hi had a team that the Nitros just couldn't seem to get around and so their rivals took the encounter 62-50. When the Whittier Cards came to town they were set to win but after it was over and the results were tabulated, Glendale had 87 and the Cards but 26. South Pasadena met with the same treatment and were easily subdued 63-49. ln the preliminaries at Hoover 22 new men qualified and most all repeated in finals. Armie Antunez set a new record in the 440 for the third time, of 49.6. Bud Humberger kept up the good work with a new record in the vault, l3l 4V8 ln the field events Dean lvlorris, Dick Speiss and Suburo Matsubara shone in their events, the shot, hop-step and broad jump, respectively. Dave Tope in the Sprints, Charles Taylor and Rod lVlcChes- ney in the hurdles, Art Gonzales and joe Hester in the mile did admirable work all season. GAINS MATSUBARA ANTUNEZ HESTER CONZALES HUM BERC-ER TAYLOR TOPE SPEISS HORNIDGE MCCHESNEY CURRY MORRIS HAYCOX DANIELS GOLDSBY BEE TRACK Following in the footsteps of their brothers, the Varsity, the Bee Track team played second fiddle to but one team, Hoover. Coached by Ranier DeMandel, the Blasters had one of the strongest all around teams in many years. This was proved by the overwhelm- ing scores they rolled up against most of their opponents. The Fullerton Indians were the first to fall before the Bees' powerful squad, 90-5. The following week was disastrous for the squad. Doped to take Hoover they traveled to Ferguson Field only to return on the short end of a 26-69 score. Alhambra proved to be little competition for the Blasters and when it was over the score read 73-22. South Pasadena traveled to Glendale, but their journey was in vain for they returned home, trounced to the tune of 75-20. After taking the Whittier Cards in the same decisive fashion the Blasters prepared for the League finals. The Bees qualified sixteen men in the preliminaries and lost to Hoover in the finals 3l-3l V2. ln the divisionals Doug Gerard placed fourth in the shot, Clayton Benjamin fourth in the broad jump, Sumner Brown fourth in the 220, Capt. Don Webb fifth in the 660 and the relay team composed of Jim Storey, Ray Winship, Alan McDonald and Clayton Benjamin copped a fifth to nose out their archrival, Hoover. Bill Daniels was disqualified on the back turn, as he was running away with the race. CEE TRACK The Cee Track Squad couldn't seem to get going this year and took but two of a five-meet series. Only a handful of hopefuls reported to Coach DeMandeI so it was difficult to build up a powerful squad. The firecrackers were first vanquished by Fullerton 52-26 and the team showed a lack of place men. The Zephyrs of Hoover blew a 56-Zl victory over the Cees the following week. Revenge is sweet and it seemed more so when the squad ran a win over Whittier in their third league encounter. Alhambra, however, felt the same way and came to Glendale to hand the 'Crackers a loss. The never-say-die spirit prevailed, however, and the Cees took a 25-Sl victory out of the South Pasadena Kittens' hide. ln the Foothill League preliminaries, eleven new placed but most dropped by the wayside in the divisionals at El Monte a week later. Outstanding in the Cee ranks this year was Dick Hardison in the 660, Langdon Tannehill in the shot and Capt. Art Foster in the sprints and broad jump. BASEBALL Unable to click as they did last year, Coach George Sperry's ball club just couldn't seem to get moving in their usual fine fashion. Hoover started things off with a 4-3 win on their own field, but returned later to win lO-2. Five was the jinx number in both encounters with Fullerton. Both games were dropped to the Indians, the first 5-O, the sec- ond 5-3. Whittier proved a little too strong for the Dynamiters who blew up in two games, dropping both 6-O, 6-3. South Pasadena, however, did well to divide the series with the locals. The first game went to South Pas. by a slim margin of l-O. Back came the Nitros, who haven't yet lost their last game in a league series, to cap the finale 3-5. This year was just one of those times when the team just failed to click. TENNIS For the second straight year Coach Phil Castlen's Varsity Tennis squad has been tops in the Foothill league. By virtue of their all-around team strength only one loss is marked up against the squad. l-loover put up hardly any competition and dropped both matches to an inspired team, 6-19, 9-l6. The Whittier Cardinals just couldn't get started and lost both matches, ll-l4g 5-20. South Pasadena pulled an upset in the second match. Losing the first by a score ot O-25, they turned around and took a thriller I3-IZ. Fullerton proved to be little trouble for the netsmen and both games went to Glendale, 5-20, 4-Zi. As press time nears, the team prepares to move on to C.l.F. competition where they are expected to make a fine showing. The lettermen this season were Dick Thompson, Bill Tevvell, Bennett Bakkenson, Burton lacobs, Marvin Freeman, joe Tebbe, jim Howard and Dick Burt. ,af GULF Dropping two of the league matches, George E. Milford Brunner's golf squad came out second in the Foothill League for l939. The Nitros split the matches with Hoover. Glendale took the first by a score of lZV2-2l V2. Hoover annexed the second by a margin of 8-7. The South Pasadena linksmen lost both matches. The first game by a score of 3-123 the second 4V2-lOV2. Whittier, who took the league this year, routed the locals in both encounters. The first match went l2Vz-ZV2 and the season was closed with a score of l0V2-4Vz. All the players show great possibilities for the future, both at Glendale High and elsewhere. The lettermen this year were Charles Webb, Ben Sperry, Ken Hartman, Don Belding and jack Hildreth.
