T0 TH E GRADUATES Difficult or not, revolution- ary or stable, unspealeably ugly as it is in spots, unbearably un- just as it often is, and with pain not always to be avoided, this world is a fantastically interest- ing place, full of beauty, touched with nobility, flashing with the loueliest sights, trembling with the loweliest sounds, dotted with libraries full of wit, with art galleries full of magic, ana' all more available to you than ever before, if only you have eyes to see ana' ears to hear and a mina' to attend. This quotation from a recent article addressed to graduates gives in a nutshell the message that I would like to give to you, Summer Graduates of Glendale High. The school cannot educate you, and, of course, no one is ever fully educated. But if school has helped to make you good consumers so that you enjoy the really fine things of life, and shun the shoddy, the cheap and the second-rate, you have a very good foundation upon which to continue your further education. Sometimes we are apt to shift responsibility from our shoulders on the plea that we are just ordinary people, not very brilliant, and so life cannot expect much of us. But as the author whom I have quoted above emphasizes, the kind of world We live in is determined by what we, the majority, admire, cherish, and esteem. No matter how great the music may be that the gifted compose, how fine the books that they may write, or how noble the pictures they paint, they will have practically no effect on civilization unless the great majority of us prize and cherish these creative masterpieces. So my word to you, as you leave us, would be the hope that you will, in your lives as consumers of the things of the world, show a discriminating appreciation of those things which are line, and true, and so stimulate those who can create to give us of their best. Your friend GEORGE Morse, Principal
