Due to an additional 200 Glendale students, a new counselor and a new system of counseling were added to the educational program this year. Mr. Nick Carras, a former physical education teacher, became Glendale's fifth counselor. With the student body divided alphabetically rather than by classes, each counselor counseled one-fifth of the students. Each also acted as a sponsor for one of the four classes, with Mr. Carras the assistant sponsor for the senior class. The class counselor supervised his class in testing activities and extra-curricular activities, including class projects for the spirit contest. In a unique phase of the new system in counseling, counselors initiated freshmen into the life of Glendale while simultaneously ushering seniors into a new life in college. 1 5 Q Mildred Green Paul Moore He-Me Se-Z senior Bill Evans and counselor Nick Carras pause in the hall to talk. 2, v sei E g... 4 23 K Q 'Y qt

The study of grammar and vocabulary, and the writing of compositions and book reports aided the English I freshmen in the use of their language. Short stories and novels, including Dicken's Tale of Two Cities, were studied in depth. Included in this year's study of poetry and plays was Shakespeare's Romeo and fuliet. English II students widened their scope by studying the literature of the world. With the aid of films and records, students gained knowledge in the field of poetry, novels, and plays. One such play was Shake- speare's juliuf Caesar. Also covered in the year's pro- gram were the medieval tales of King Arthur. Both classes learned the art .of speaking before a group by giving oral reports and speeches. y
