Dr. Joe Kuklenski, after two years experience as Deputy Su- perintendent, will step up to the position of Superintendent of Springfield Schools after August 1, 1970. In his present capacity as Deputy Superintendent of Instruc- tion, he is director and coordinator of all educational programs in the district. He assists Dr. Graff in all the areas in which the superintendent is involved, In addition, Dr. Kuklenski has the authority to take charge in the absence of Dr. Graff at meetings. I-Ie is well-qualified to assume the role of Superin- tendent in August. A As superintendent, Dr. Kuklenski's responsibilities will be to provide leadership for implementing the policies and programs of the Board of Education. Dr. A. M. Alexander, Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education, works to improve the qualityiof the secondary educa- tional program. Included in Dr. Alexander's schedule are visits to the high schools to work with the principals involving instructional pro- grams and student activities and regulations. He also meets with the Student Council leaders from each school to assist them with their needs and problems. A The administrative duties of Dr. Alexander include the various responsibilities in the areas of personnel, supervision, and instruc- tion. During Dr. Graff's tenure as superintendent, the Springfield public school system has grown to about 26,000 students and has established a reputation for excellence. Dr. Graff had the foresight to plan for the financing and building of adequate physical facilities for the district. In the area of the educational program, Dr. Graff's leadership was instrumental in helping the school and community to keep apace of educational changes and needs. Dr. Graff has served on many councils and committees. In 1967, he was president of the Forty Club, a group composed of superinten- dents of large school systems in eight Mid- Western states. In 1968, he was president of the Missouri State Teachers Association. In addition to these, he has received many awards for his outstanding service. In 1965, he was awarded an Outstanding Service to Education award pre- sented by the Education Clubs of America. In 1968 he was recipient of the Citation for Dis- tinguished Service to Education award given by the College of Education of the University of Missouri. Dr. Graff also received an honor- ary Doctorate in Law from Drury College in Superintendent Graff discusses yearbook editing with Jana McCurdy during a 1966. visit to his office.
