Below. During the year many problems arise for the English student. Pfost discusses such a question with one of her pupils, Ann Hornloack. After class Mrs. it 3? 2 5 i Y 1 E 2 l 5 wwf English emphasizes discussion in closs To increase students' understanding of the En- glish language, courses in literature and compo- sition were offered. English Ill classes studied the birth and growth of American literature from Emerson to Steinbeck and Dickenson to e. e. cummings. Pupils in the English Ill classes inspected and investigated the distinctive world of American literature. English IVL gave a greater insight into self-ex- pression as it pertains to English literature. Through research papers, reports, and class discussion the panorama of literature unfolded for the students in IVL. ,Composition and mechanics of the language were taught in the English IVC classes. Speech, Drcimotics proctice expression Perhaps the broadest avenue to self-expression is in the field of public speaking and acting. Through the direction of the speech and dramatics departments, students of Glendale learned both the basic and the finer points of these arts. Dramatics students forged and sharpened their skills as amateur actors through constant practice in class and in the various assemblies held through- out the year. In class they participated in pan- tomimes, improvisations, and duet acts. As well as the tie-in element in the assemblies, they per- formed in the production of Annie Get Your Gun. At the end of each quarter, the speech class got to show its colors in the Neophyte tourna- ment held at each of the four Springfield public high schools. Covered in these tournaments were oratory, poetry, duet acting, and debate.
