TURNER WHITE I The Springfield Public School System is recognized as one of the outstanding school systems in the nation. More important than any recognition, however, is the quality of education to which the Board of Education is committed. The Board of Education constitutes one of the most important organizations in the community and is one of the greatest stabilizing forces in the nation. The Board, composed of six citizens elected by the voters of the district, is entrusted with the re- sponsibility for planning for the educational welfare of children. i The technological and scientific advances of re- cent .years have brought about tremendous changes in society and have piacediincreased demands on educa- tion. In order to plan an educational program that meets 10 the needs of this changing society, the Board works closely with its executive officer, the superintendent of schools, in studying the problems that are involved and in establishing broad policies for the effective operation of the educational program. Springfield has been fortunate for many years to have the freely-given services oft outstanding citizens as members of the Board of Education. The only compensation for the many hours spent away from their private affairs is the satisfaction that comes from important personal contribution to the community and to the nation through the education of today's youth. The record of outstanding leadership and service of the Board of Education merits the appreciation of the citizens of the community.
