Dedication Once, ambitious men dreamed a dust-bedeviled cactus patch of sand and sage might yield elbow room and hidden treasure il the desert valley could be made to support enough human life. Borrowing irrigation methods from various 1ndian civilizations already existing there, these pioneers sweated in the dry heat to channel the vital water. It was four decades of adaptation and building later, when the valley's inhabitants harnessed water for its natural force, as well, with the completion of Roosevelt Dam in 1911. Nearing the turn of the century in the meantime, cities crystalized at the busiest crossroads for the convenience of the growing population. The desire to impose order on these concentrations of activity led to a constitutional convention in Phoenix. statehood was granted Arizona two years later in 1912 . . . The preceding pages illustrate the direction of Valley growth since then. With these pages, the annual staff has suggested, in addition, the determining factors of the Valley of the Sun's future, to which we dedicate the 1061-65 Cardinal.
