What type of collections does the ecology pro- gram have? We have mammal skins and skulls, most of the fresh water fish from this area. amphibeans, rep- tiles, insects, parasites, scat Cfecal droppingsj, and the beginnings of a bird collection Most of the collections grew out of Mr. McCann's and Mr. J. Nycle's private collections. The scat collection contains about three dozen different specimans, including the droppings of: deer, moose, elk, Wolf, bat, and owl. Mr. William's con- tributed to the scat collection by bringing back elephant, gazelle, and giraffe droppings from Afri- ca. What motivated you to start collecting them? The mammal and bird collections were started for teaching purposes, for he felt it would be good to have examples for his students to see. The fish collection stemmed from a class he took at the University of Michigan. How do you collect them? The mammals and birds were mostly found dead and a few were trapped. Most of the mammals are stuffed at the school by either Mr. McCann or students. Instead of stuffing the birds, they are injected with fermelda and left to mummify. How long have you been acquiring the different collections? Twenty years. I What is the most unusual speciman? A vertabra and rib of a whale found in Maine and the tusk and hip bone of a Masodon. The Masodon tusk and hip bone was donated by Mrs. Buttle's, who found it in Alaska.
