u- ,wr Y, IT A 6 ' Q5 - ie , 'gli Eiljicf ng c A . 1 5 - ug - ' JT' S5555- QI 12' Ill W, V-ea Aa R 3 Ulal' gap llll -L!- ' X ts ng X A. ax 52 X,an ' Suuzgib E me Sfory 0 gdndard To wrute the hustory of Glenbard us to pursue the paths of educatuon un thus commu nuty as ut has developed sunce the turst settlers erected theur log schoolhouses About the turn of the century consuderable unterest un formung a hugh school became evudent ln the fall of 1915 Glen Ellyn resudents through theur board' of educatuon establushed the Glen Ellyn Hugh School A portuon of the local bank buuldung was rented for class rooms and over futty scholars un the freshman and sophomore classes assembled there on October 4 1915 Two teachers Arthur Holtzman and Muss Erun McMechan had been employed to supervuse them At uts organuzatuon the Glen Ellyn Hugh School offered a two year course It soon became apparent however that the grammar school board dud not have the taxung power to funance the establushment of a complete four year hugh school An electuon was held and a separate board of educatuon organuzed the Glen Ellyn Townshup Hugh School on December 27 1915 Arrangements were made for more classrooms durmg the summer of 1916 when a thurd floor was added to the bank buuldung The follow ung September seventeen senuors who had been attendung Wheaton Hugh School began theur last year un Glen Ellyn Theur graduatuon the school s furst was held on June 7 1917 In May of 1918 the school s pruncupal Arthur Holtzman resugned to enter mulutary servuce On hus recommendatuon the school board hured Mr Fred L Buester to replace hum By Aprul of 1919 the school had receuved full accredutung from the state authoru tues and the school board consudered purchasung property for eventual expansuon The present sute was selected un an electuon held un August of 1919 The total property consusted of about twenty tuve acres uncludung most of Honeysuckle Hull and all of Lake Ellyn The lake was later deeded to the Glen Ellyn park board after a portuon of ut had been arauned and developed unto an athletuc held Feelung that Glen Ellyn and Lombard together could erect and mauntaun a better hugh school than euther town alone members of the board of educatuon addressed a mass meetung at Lombard out of whuch a petutuon grew for the annexatuon of Lombard to the Glen Ellyn Hugh School Dustruct The annexatuon was made un Aprul 1921 and the board ummeduately consudered the erectuon ot a hugh school buuldung on the property owned The necessary bond ussue was approved on February 11 1922 and a contest was held to select a suutable name for the school By a resolutuon of the board the name Glenbard Townshup Hugh School was adopted on May 15 1922 and the cornerstone at the base of the tower was laud on September 10 1922 Work begun on the new buuldung durung the fall proceeded through the wunter and furst classes were held un the new buuldung on Aprul 19 1923 The buuldung was dedtcated on May 13 and the local newspaper commented un an edutorual The chully days the hammerung and the poundung the untunushed rooms the turmoul and confusuon of the hurrued movung and the uncessant assocuatuon of carpenters plumbers and elec trucuans are all as forgotten as uf they had never been Tradutuon us begunnung to grow luke the clungung uvy on uts stone walls around the rooms and halls of Glenbard Town shup Hugh School f-,-,-.
