GIenbord's tradition, its peculiarities, its very education-ways are all exposed by the spot- light on Mr. Glenbard himself. He is ibid. and op. cit., in fact, bibliography and footnote complete! O Strange as it may seem, it would be im- possible to separate the story of GTHS from the biography of FLB: much of his life's hope and exemplary service has definitely set the Green and White colors of the school. Surely this fact alone is excellent testimony to the prestige of the man, the citizen, the educator. I The climate of Mr. Biester's personality is not defined in extremes. Gibraltar-like, his de- pendability is a source ot pleasure and confidence to those whom he serves. Never verbose, laconic in advice, sharp of wit, and keen in observation: these qualities are his to muster when necessity demands or occasion permits. 5 1g.. - .pf , .,f,.' - f , 1 1 , 'L ' A-J -' W' si N If ' ' . In 1926 the old library and all rooms west of the archway, and in 1931 the auditorium and com- mercial rooms were added. The gymnasium was enlarged, and the foods' classrooms constructed in 1939-1940, parts of the final addition were opened in March, 1953. It contained a new li- brary, additional cafeteria space, classrooms, and rooms for the music and mechanical arts depart- ments. The old library and offices were converted into new office space for the administration and counselors. Mr. Arthur Holtzman, the school's first principal, was contacted and asked to prepare a few words for the 1953 Pinnacle. His statement follows: The success of any venture is predicated almost entirely on the loyalty of the individuals responsible. Today you at Glenbard have everything. ln the fall of 1915 we had nothing. No student body, no cur- riculum, no building, but when the students who composed the first classes of Glen Ellyn High School, assembled for their first meeting, they had what One of the classrooms in the first unit of the school is shown at the right. Miss Trow- bridge, who loaned this photograph to the Pinnacle for reproduction, commented on con- ditions at Glenbard as she found them when she came in 1921. For cooperation, school spirit, student attitude, and scholastic ability, Glenbard was tops. No one could have had nicer first years of teaching experience. you can't find in books: A Team Spirit, a great desire to have their own school regardless of the obstacles. So I salute the first two graduation classes of Glen Ellyn High School, and their first Board of Education. They are the ones who made Glenbard possible.' My second salute goes to Fred Biester, a great Educational Administrator. Thirty-five years out of thirty-eight is a unique record. Never has a recom- mendation of mine turned out so well. They had their first view of Glenbard clubs as they paraded through the halls, bedecked in war- paint and outlandish garb. Their biggest thrill in life was being grabbed for the frosh grub bag. Freshman girls, out for a fling, attended the Heart Hop with senior men. Al Geiersbach, president, Judy Johnson, vice-president, Dick McWard, secretary, and Bessie Moy, treasurer, topped the Class of T956 list. The sophomores had outgrown the upperclass- men's scorn for winging their way up the down stairs. The noble sophomores also elected four mem- bers to the Student Council and waited breathlessly to see if Silas would fall into the pit. Class of T955 heads were Dick Wertz, president, Jack Dietrich, vice-president, and Sue Paine, secretary-treasurer. The effervescent sophs have become carefree iuniors. The iunior girls set the style with peroxided D.A.'s. The high lights of the year were Whitty, Henry J., the Junior Play, Father of the Bride, and the Junior-Senior Prom, attended by fully onee fifth of the junior class. Leaders of the Class of 1954 were Dennis Cook, president, Larry LaFleur, vice-president, and Joan Shaw, secretary-treasurer. Joan Shaw, Larry LaFleur, Dennis Cook. 7 N 5-3 'ft 6' ,I JUNIORS MR. Mr. Arthur Repke, who has coached the sport since it began, attended the University of Iowa for several summers to learn the funda- mentals of coaching golf. In 1945 and 1949, the Bard golf team won both the conference crown and the district championship. ln addi- tion the squad placed second in the state tournament during 1943 and 1945. Consistently scoring in the low 80's Dean Refram led the team as captain. With the roll of drums and the flair of trumpets, the band marched into its twenty-fifth year. The band gives students an opportunity of learning to enioy good music both as a listener and as a participant. Special activities included formations at football games, a Christmas program, two spring concerts, and leading the local Memorial Day parades. Soloists, ensembles, and the entire band competed in local, district, and state contests. The Band Boosters financed two clinics conducted by the director of the University of Illinois football band. Glenbard was represented at the first West Suburban Music Festival at Arlington Heights. Supervising the band were Mr. Orth G. Baer, director and founder, and Mr. Henry Blake, assistant. Named for the British conserva- tionist, lzaac Walton, the club was formed in 1939 and became a school organization in 1941. In addition to the tree-plant- ing project, the boys picked, shelled, and ground 600 pounds of pheasant feed for the seven feeding stations they had built. Speakers and movies highlighted the meetings. The lkes were led by Bill Hunt, president, Vance Cowan, vice-president, Ed Berndt, secre- tary-treasurer, and Mr. L. H. Burnett, faculty advisor. Such remarks as Ho hum, your move, and Checkmate may have been heard by Glen- bardians who chanced to pass Room 212 as members of the Chess Club defended their stand- ing. The club was founded in 1940. As the game progressed, the players sent representatives to the DuPage County Junior Chess Championships, and Mr. John Wohl displayed his ability to play simultaneous chess. What's this? Something new? Green and white striped trees? No, it's only Glenbard getting ready to begin its third annual Homecoming. To liven up the campus, the Hilltoppers, in co-operation with the Boosters, bedecked the trees with green and white streamers. First Quarter To start off the big week end there was a rousing pep convo, complete with brief speeches by the coaches and a skit by Pep Club. Two of the convo's unique features were the introduction of a new song, Glenbard Forever, by Arthur Frederic Otis, and the revealing of the identity of the queen, Carol Rudolph, so that she could reign over the festivities. Second Quarter The events of Friday began with the torchlight parade which ended at the bonfire on the football field. There were remarks by the coaches, who then introduced the team captains. The activities were concluded with cheers and a snake dance. Half Half time brought o parade of nineteen floats entered by Glenbard Clubs. Taking top honors in the beauty division were French Club, first prize, and Pan American League, second, in humor, Pep Club, first, and Senior Boys, second, in originality, G. A. A., first, and Kits and Skits, Masque and Gavel, and Thespians, second. Third Quarter The Homecoming game found Glenbardians cheering the green and white on to a 33-12 victory over River- side-Brookfield. Fourth Quarter The climax . . . the Homecoming Dance and crowning the queen by the co-captains of the varsity team . . . and then . . . it's all over until next year. ,f 'Q, ,Q , mf' 'ir . f K 1 Y f T ,:' .A fy- A . Selecting the king, queen, and court of the 1953 Pinnacle was a new iob for the members of T.V.'s Down You Go panel. Dr. Bergen Evans, leader, and panel-members Toni Gilman, Carmelita Pope, Robert Breen, and Francis Coughlin made their choice from pictures of all the members of the class of 1953, and confessed that the task, though enjoyable, was not easy. The pictures were submitted to the group before one of their Friday evening shows over the Dumont Network, and selections were made on the basis of personal attractiveness. Chosen to reign over the Pinnacle were Queen Loretta Beaver and King John Whitney, and their courts, consisting of Frances Flugge, Barbara Kuczok, Judy McLeod, Pat Wolff, John Clifford, Charles lmpey, John Maclennan, and Ken Maisel. 128 43 wg- Leu.
