Have you ever wondered how we got the name Glen Rose, where that Beaver came from, why the colors are red and white instead of blue and white, or why the annual is called the Rose Petal? We were wondering too. So we got busy and talked to everyone in the county and we found out what we wanted. So here it is: r THE HISTORY OF GOOD OLE GLEN ROSE HIGH SCHOOL The Name: , I only heard about five different stories to this one, but, I think I've found the right one. I talked to Bro. Steve Thomas, who was one of the four teachers who were teaching at the time of the nam- ing. The other three were: Myrtle Moore, Elliot Keisler and Luty Floyd. Bro. Thomas told me that there was a stage in the building and he wanted to put a curtain on it. So he bought one from a man and woman. When they came back to deliver it, the woman asked what the name of the school was. Bro. Thomas told her it didn't have one. So she suggested they call it Glen Rose, after the famous coach at the University of Arkansas. KI even heard the woman was sweet on Mr. Rosell They thought the woman had a fine idea. So they accepted it as the official name of the school. The Mascot: ' This one wasn't too hard to find out. I just had to talk to the right person: Mr. Howard Easterling. He asked me what I thought was the one reason you need a mascot. It's obvious: A basketball team. He even gave me the names of the first basketball team. Name Height Kenyon Dawson 6' 2 Ermon Mobley 6' 7 Bennie Spencer 6' 1 Jack Clift 6' 1 Conrad Tucker 5'11 Lloyd Clardy 6' 0 Truman King ? Anyway you can't have a basketball team without a mascot. So, one day, in the spring of '46, Mr. Easterl- ing, Mrs. Doyle Henson, Pat Keisler and Mrs. Nita Fair were in the office at lunch discussing the mascot. Mr. Easterling told me, We talked about everything from tigers to kangaroos. He finally suggested Beavers , since they were always so busy, cutting down trees and slapping their tails when danger is around. So there is where that Beaver came from. I think we have upheld the purpose of the mascot: The Busy Bea- u vers. The colors: Well, again Mr. Easterling helped me with this. Since the school was named after the coach at the Univer- sity, why couldn't our colors be the same as the Razorbacks? So, red and white it was! The Annual: You can kind of guess why they call the annual, the Rose Petal, because half of our name is heard that the rose petals reminded them of memories. Isn't that what an annual is all about? Here is a list of Glenn Holicer-Ed Myerline Gatlin Bobbie Benedict Frances Keisler Glen Kirkpatrick Melita Fair Darrell Sammons Geneva Masoner So, now you ha the members on the first annual staff. itor ve it: The history of good ole G.R.H.S.
