STANLEY Lnlnrs, B.S. 41 leobcafec! fo . . . All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players . . these immortal words of William Shakespeare pertain to the lives of all, even to the teen-age boy or girl whose stage is the school he or she attends. Here at Glen-Nor for six important years the student's life centers around the school. Every- thing in which he participates-the daily learn- ing routine, the athletic activities, the school plays, the dances, the assemblies, the proms, and the music night-relates to the school in some way, and more of his time is spent here than anywhere else. To learn the lines for all these great events and to master the motions for them, he labors many hours. Opening nights are frequent, and with few exceptions the per- formances are well received. Occupying many on-stage moments and pro- viding a means of reminiscing when the big show is over is the yearbook. This year for the first time the annual has a name all of its own. After much discussion and a balloting of the entire school, the book was finally christ- ened The Chieftain. Especially is this name fit- ting in view of two things. Have not the ath- letic squads long been termed the Indians? And have not Glen-Nor students time and again proven themselves superior in achieve- ment along scholastic, social, and extracurricu- lar lines? Yes, definitely, The Chieftain is a title very suitable for the drama of life at Glen-Nor High School. To you, the reader, then we extend a hearty welcome as you look through this yearbook- the program of the great play in our lives. May you enjoy it as much as we have enjoyed pre- senting it to you. The house lights are dimming, the final strains of the overture die away: so settle back in your seats and on with the play. Stanley Landis, who has expanded the horizons of Glen-Nor's world through his inspired instruction of shop and mechanical drawing: who has encour- aged the students to be better members of Glen-Nor by his sound ad- vice, and who has directed the Class ot '47 with a deep understanding and untiring interest in its every endeavor. How pompous we sound! Yet all these eulogies are well-deserved. Fully realizing, however, that none really helps you to know our dedi- catee land one must know him to appreciate himl, we ask you to join us as we interview him personally. It you're ready, Mr. Landis, let's proceed- Born? Yes. Lancaster County. Where did you attend high school? I went to Paradise Township High, but it wasn't all paradise. What was your attitude toward school as a boy? You mean, how did I like it? Well . . . tHere Mr. Landis cleared his throat and the answer was inaudible.l Where did you attend college? Millersville State Teachers' Collee. At the present time I am going to Temple University. Did you ever teach at any school other than Glen-Nor? Yes. I taught at Coplay High in Lehigh County, and also at Fleet- wood High, which is located in Berks County. What do you do in your spare time? What spare time? Well, when you do tind yourself tree? Why, I am an amateur gunsmith. What do you like best about teaching? The contact with young people. What sports do you care tor the most? Hunting and swimming. Do you like to dance? Yes, very much. Do you have any pet dislikes? Well, it there is one thing which brings me to the state ot madness and rage it is having a person chew a dry cracker close by my ear-I can't stand it! For some reason I teel that cr ackers should be quietly devoured. Do you think it an honor to be the sponsor of the Senior Class? I teel that it is quite an honor. The class was indeed considerate to have me. What kind ot an appetite do you have? Not much at any time, but OFTEN. How do you feel about having The Chiettain dedicated to you? 'iWhat? Is that what this grilling is tor? Why me? It certainly is very much ot a surprise. All I can say is that I am very gratetul, and teel it is a high honor that the stat! has chosen me. I won't soon forget it. Glen-Nor students and faculty members were shocked to learn of the sudden death of Mr. Daniel H. Englehart on February 13. Yes, he had been sick, very sick, but he had rallied. In fact, he was out at a bas- ketball game only the previous Friday night. Then- he was gone. For twenty-four years Danny, as he was known to all, served the school faithfully--first as a member of the original school board and then as chief custo- dian. Arriving in the morning before anyone else and leaving at night after everyone else, he served effi- ciently and cheerfully. Constantly he was on the job and Willing to lend a hand. In spite of impaired health as a result of a heart condition, Mr. Love willingly accepted the responsibil- ity placed upon him by the community's citizens in be- ing elected to the joint Glen-Nor High School Board. As a member he zealously fulfilled the duties connected with the chairmanship of the Properties Committee and the Vice-Presidency. No praise can be adequate for this man who served the school so faithfully. Endeared to all who knew him, his opinions were highly respected. Faculty and student body alike pay homage to the memory of a great friend. MR. W. A. LOVE Av., ! A fa .91-, Mn. F. H. Rosznrs Another noted civic leader who was primarily interested in the education of youth, Mr. Frank H. Roberts, passed away at his home last Thanksgiving Day at the age of eighty-seven. For twenty-six years he gave unstintingly of his time and ef- fort as a member of the Glen- olden School Board. At the time of the erection of our own Glen-Nor High School. he was serving as its president. In honor of his many years of un- selfish endeavor in behalf of local boys and girls. it was only fitting that the new sports grounds be named the Frank H. Roberts Athletic Field. No greater memorial can be erected than this which has al- ready been dedicated to him. Every day-whether it is the gridiron, the hockey field, the tennis court. or the baseball diamond-it is serving hun- dreds ot Glen-Nor students. May it continue to stand as a constant reminder to them of one of their greatest benefac- torsl Have you met the Glen-Nor School Board? The Chieftain staff is glad to introduce you to these understanding community representatives who work diligently to plan wisely and to direct the destiny of our school. This energetic group of men and women, whose monthly meeting place is the school library. is constantly seeking ways to make our school lite a happy one. What kind of sports' section will that be? The sports' pages are the most important in the book anyway . . . I say let's dedicate the book to Mr. X. No, let's dedicate it to Mr. Y. No, Mr. X. No, Mr. Y . . . How about call- ing it the Tomahawk? Or the Trailblazer? Or the Warrior? Or Ohan Owati? Or the Chief- tain? . . . Look, if only we had an enlarger, we could . . And so passed many sixth periods in Room 16. Sounds hectic? No, not really. Only healthy discussion from which was born this yearbook. The staff, organized last May under Miss Isabel Creagmile, didn't wait until the last minute to get to work. Instead the printer's contract was signed and the photographer selected before Iune, 1946, was over. Sum- mer vacation saw all pages of the book planned, although these had to be revised time and again. Upon school's opening in September, work was immediately com- menced to find a fitting title for the annual, which had gone nameless for years. After several weary hours of proposing and re- jecting, the term, The Chieftain, was finally selected with the majority consent of the student body. Q1 editor: R. manager. Then started the constant buzz of activity that went on every Monday and Friday after- noon when staff members wrote, crossed out, rewrote, photographed, collected money, captioned pictures and undertook the task of publishing this year's annual. Yes, often we wondered if there ever would come forth a book, yet here it is-Glen-Nor's twenty-first yearbook, but her first Chieftain. L. to R.: I. Schiller assistant snapshot edi tor: G. Seated: C. Hall, R. Heacock, C. Bailey. Standing: H. Howell, I. Haeberle. R VER tll The Student Council, under Miss Miriam Iones cmd Miss lean Lentz, is one of the outstanding organizations at Glen-Nor. The council, composed of representatives from every homeroom. meets twice a month to promote the general welfare of Glen- Nor. From the members of the group are drawn monitors whose duty it is to keep order and facilitate traffic in the halls during the passing of classes. From the group this year was also chosen a committee to revise the Constitution. Activities spon- sored by the Student Council included the raising of money to buy records for the Iuke Box and the collection of contribu- tions for the Charity Drive. Executives tor the year consisted of president, William Hutch- inson: vice-president, Robert Sparks: secretary, Marjorie Tim- monsg corresponding secretary, Alda Ann Yost: treasurer, Richard Heacockp and sergeant-at-arms, Ioan McDermott. .Sim 2 UUR MURAll IS ...Q BUUSIIU THE HI-Y ORGANIZATION Providing the opportunity of an evening of wholesome fun is one of the purposes of the Hi-Y organization. This year the club members took that aim to heart in a big way. Sporting events in Philadelphia were visited, gym nights were scheduled, and recreational facilities opened to them at the Chester YMCA were used with zest. Other Monday night meetings, at 7:15, were devoted to speakers who told experi- ences encountered in various places vis- ited by them. The girls, who, by the way, changed the name ol their organization from the Girl Reserves to the present title, have been busy making dolls for unfortunate children, and place mats and menus for soldiers in hospitals, while at Christmas they sold Christmas seals in the bank. During the year they also helped to put on several assem- bly programs. Through the efforts ot their officers, however, meetings haven't been all work and no play. To tell the truth, there have been lots of good times skating, swimming, throwing parties with the Hi-Y, listening to interesting speakers, such as Rev. Ralph Andersen of Glenolden, giving terrific initiations, sing- ing Christmas carols, putting on skits, and playing in the gym on gym nights Executives included president, Mildred Freemang vice-president, Ruth Lutz, secretary, Barbara Branchg corresponding secretary, Barbara Plumb, and treasurer, Marion Sipple. .ti if , TENTH GRADE HONOR STUDENTS I ,' The following students were elected ' during their ninth year to Iunior Na- ' V 5 tional Honor Society, but have not yet Q I I been accepted into Senior National -.,,n Honor Society: Row I: A. It cer- tainly has done its part to increase school spirit by playing for dances, appearing on as- sembly programs, and adding that sprightly oomph to the Spring Concert. Wednesday mornings found its members faithfully prac- ticing the latest hit before a crowd of fans who got up earlier than usual to fill the auditorium. Who knows? Maybe it's fostering another Gene Krupa or a Tommy Dorsey! Time will tell. dh'- ,l Music hath charms to soothe the savage breast . . or so Glen-Norites believe when they listen to the strains of song heralded by the Senior Glee Club, under the direction of Mr. Marlin O'Neal. Meeting every Friday since football season, the members have taken part in the Christmas program, and been the guests of Station WIBG on February 7. Biggest event of the year for them, however, was the Spring Concert, when each looked his very prettiest tor handsomestl and sang his best to leave behind many outstanding musical reveries. u av? i uttttllllvll gm if Scene 6 One of the most important active groups of the ids Committee, under the school is the Visual A direction of Assistant Principal E. Final accounting found our squads in the upper third-a well-deserved tribute to Mrs. Gertrude Hutchins, sponsor. Un- der her expert guidance the teams returned again this spring. Unfortunately, it is too early to know the results. LIBRARY CLUB A junior high club whose main purpose is library service has been organized by Miss Kathryn Iennings. Pupils are instructed in filing catalog cards, checking in of books, arrange- ment of shelves, and decoration of bulletin boards. Officers ot this year's group comprised: president, Mary Louise Stillman: vice-president, Ianet Lutz: secretary, Ioy Englehartg and treas- urer, Ieannette Diedel. PUBLICITY CLUB This year an innovation occurred in the Inter- boro News, local town paper, in the form of a three-column spread devoted entirely to Glen- Nor High School news. To assemble the class notes, sports, club happenings, and other ac- tivities to be submitted lor use in this column and as stories in the Chester Times, another local paper, a Publicity Club, under the direc- tion of Miss Dorothy Seitz, was formed. .Shane 7 MATH TEAM Seated: I. In the first min- utes of the play Glen-Nor recovered a fumble on the one-yard line. Then Iohn Forbes crashed over for a touchdown and an extra point. In the final quarter Wil- mington completed a pass for its only T.D., but failed to make the tying point. GLEN-NOR 0-SHARON HILL Z1 The most lop-sided game of the year proved to be that against Sharon Hill. On their second play from scrim- mage, the opponents tricked the G-N defense when Ed Taylor threw a long pass to Tom Zebley, who scored un- touched. Sharon Hill quickly scored again, with Taylor going the last ten yards. In the third period the offensive continued to drive hard and furiously, Mike Sorentino, the S. H. pigskin champion, scoring the third T.D. GLEN-NOR 20-EDDYSTONE 6 With a few minutes remaining until half time, Ernie Lord intercepted a pass and scampered fifty yards for the initial score. Glen-Nor then marched to the two-yard line, where Iimmie Dyson tossed to Warren Spencer, and the Indians led, 13-0. Eddystone on their first play tossed a flat pass, which Frank Morris intercepted and raced over, bringing the score to 20-0. With minutes remaining, the Stoners kept themselves from being white-washed by scoring six points on a fifty-yard run. GLEN-NOR 34-PROSPECT PARK 0 By virtue of hard line smashing on a 15-yard iaunt, the first touchdown was made by Forbes. In the early part of the second quarter, Irwin recovered a P. P. fum- ble, while Rodier in two plays galloped over the goal line. Prospect again fumbled, this time Don Schneider grabbing the ball. On the third down, Dyson hit Spencer in the end zone, and Forbes' second conversion made the score 20-U. Rodier then plowed over the five-yard line, while Spencer picked up a blocked kick. Forbes again converted for the extra point, making the final tally 34-U. GLEN-NOR 7-SWARTHMORE 0 The Indians had to win this one. Gaining a break shortly after the game started, G-N recovered a fumble on the fifty. Marching quickly to the twenty-nine, the Indians went into their shift which put Tom Barrar on the end. Tom shot down into the end zone and took lim Dyson's pass unhampered. Forbes converted. Great de- fensive play featured the rest of the game. GLEN-NOR 13-COLLINGDALE 20 In a neighborhood feud, Collingdale's Orange and Black took home a victory after a hard-fought game on the G-N field. After driving 50 yards through the Indians' line, Don Iohns scooted around right end for a tally late in the first period. Coming back fighting, the Indians scored on a great pass caught by lack Bertolet, and led at the half, 7-6. The lead was overcome by a surging Collingdale team in the third quarter, as they scored two touchdowns. In a final bid, the Indians scored on a pass from Dyson to lanky Spencer. The final whistle then sounded, the game going to Collingdale, 20-13. GLEN-NOR 7--CLIFTON U Both clubs played scoreless ball until, with only five minutes remaining in the first half, Rodier galloped around right end for the only T.D. of the game. Forbes then converted, which made the score 7-0. The second half was a bitter struggle, with neither team being able to score. When the final gun went off, the tally re- mained-G-N, 75 Clifton Heights, 0. GLEN-NOR 23-YEADON 0 I-it the end of the first half, the Indians were leading by a 2-O score. Starting the second half, a pass from Dyson to Spencer netted a T.D. ln the third quarter, Rodier took a pass from Dym Dyson and ran for 6 more points. Plunging over, Forbes kicked the three extra points to bring his record up to thirteen for sixteen, the best percentage in Delaware County. Q K D. Scxnsznsn R. Lauren Scene 2 . . 1 D.
