They took 2nd place in the overall class competition for the Homecoming pep week and finished in 1st place during winter pep week. They also held several bake sales and went caroling over Christmas vacation. The Freshman teams both finished 2nd in the basketball class tournaments. Finally, the Freshman proved themselves to be leaders, not followers, in school functions this year. CLASS OFFICERS: Rita Fleis, Treasurer; John Baxter, V. All the past struggles for women's rights and equality were brought to a climax with a female being elected as President of the Glen Lake Student government. Parliamentary procedures took a new turn for Glen Lake with the impeachment of our student council president. Under the training of Coach Bill Brendel, the Harriers posted one successful win at the home trail against Onekama. Jeff Popa was the team's Number One Man, always placing in the top five. In Elk Rapids, Jeff set a new track record by running the course in 17 minutes and 3 seconds. Always running close behind Jeff was the Number Two Man, Dave Reynolds. The seven-man team finished the year by placing third in the conference. 15 Little Lakers Hustle KNEELING: Joe Gillen, Mgr.; Robert Schettek, Mike Shapiery, Ron Flowers, Bob Hayes, Raymond Flowers, Tony Nemeskal, John Baxter, Richard Majszak, Jim Savage. This year's Little Lakers, coached by Mr. John Schlosser, worked hard to play good games in spite of injury to the players, especially to the quarterback and his replacements. This year's Coach's Award was earned by Ken Narva, Tony Nemeskal, and Joe Reece. In all, they played eight games against strong and determined opposition and ended the season with an over-all record of 3-5. Drive Toward Their Goal The Glen Lake Laker football team ended the season with a 2-4-1 Conference record and a 2-5-1 overall. The non-conference game being a 14-0 loss to Lake City, opening the season schedule. The inexperienced Lakers began to improve their playing as the season progressed. Tlie varsity placed two men on both the offensive and defensive All-Conference football team: these being Dave Gillen and Steve Fryer on offen- sive; and Dave Gillen and Tom Savage on defen- sive. Steve Fryer was named Most Valuable Player on this year's team. Congratulations to these fine young men and also to the entire team for their enthusiasm and team work throughout the season. 19 LEFT TO RIGHT, KNEELING: Steve Cherry, Randy Skipski, John Fitzpatrick, Mark Deering, Paul Haywood, Mike Gavin. The students participated by showing each other their class spirit in pie-eating contests, tug-of-wars, and skits. On the windy afternoon of October 12, the threat of rain did not spoil any enthusiasm for the marching band or the participants of the parade. As in past years, the parade went through the four towns of Cedar, Glen Arbor, Empire and Maple City. 22 23 Homecoming Week The Glen Lake Lakers hosted Brethren for the Homecoming game. The half-time activities in- cluded the marching band and the parade of floats. This year's theme Kick-Off '73 was well portrayed in the Senior float, which won the float competition. 24 The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Home- coming Queen, Noreen Fleis, and her Court. Noreen was escorted by Tom Savage, and they were atten- ded by: Laurie Flaska and Jeff Popa, Senior representatives; Kae Sutherland and Ed Drzewiecki, Junior representatives; Patti Stachnik and Ken Narva, the Sophomore representatives; and Rith Fleis and John Baxter, Fresh- men representatives. 25 Cercie Francais The French Club of 1973-74 included 30 members; President, Julie Weeks; Vice President, Dawn Cherry; Secretary, Kae Sutherland; Treasurer, Beth Bolton and their advisor Mary Jane Carlisle. They held their annual French Christmas dinner at Raphael's Restaurant in Empire, during which little gifts were exchanged. In May the French II students took a trip to Stratford, Ontario, where they saw the plays Pericles and The Imaginary Invalid , which not only increased their literary background, but also enhanced their gourmet talents, which is how they paid for their trip. Marching Lakers This year's main accomplishment for the band was being fully outfitted in uniforms. At the Frankfort football game the Marching Lakers made their stunning debut, thus bringing the fund raising to a close. For variety, a flag corps, composed of 20 girls and directed by Miss Bodeau, was added to the marching band. In February the band received a II rating at District Band Festival. In May, we hosted the All- Conference Band. Many talented musicians from within our conference met and performed a Sunday concert in our gym. Summer brought the return of marching practice in preparation for the Cherry Festival parades. Under the directions of drum major Anne Hayes and Director Tom MacNaughton, the band received much praise for the entire year. 29 30 Harmonies and Melodies This year's chorus gave three concerts for the enjoy- ment of the community. Each reflected a different mood and theme: Christmas, Winter and Pops. The members, under the direction of Cecelia Buchman, competed again this year in Festival which was held in Cadillac. This year was completed with their contribution to the graduation ceremonies in May. 32 33 In the Spirit of Christmas SPONSORED BY PEPPLER REALTY INC. Realtors. Laker Style! Cheerleading seems to be a full-time job at Glen Lake, as the J.V. and Varsity cheerleaders took good care of their teams. Spirit was high and the cheer- leaders were always doing something new; they were loud and kept getting louder as the season progressed. The girls were constantly on the lookout for new stunts and chants to present to the crowd. A new break through appeared at each home and away basketball game. The cheerleaders prepared and served a breakfast for the football teams, and pre-game dinners for the basketball teams. They purchased new pom poms for a great pom pom routine to Nobody But You by Bread. The routine was performed by both the J.V . and Varsity cheerleaders. Varsity cheerleaders attended a N.W. Conference clinic at Mesick where they performed and learned new skits, chants, and mounts. Selling personalized shirts helped to raise money to pay for the pom poms and start a fund for next year's expenses. Basketball team com- pleted the season with a 6 win and 8 loss conference record and a 3 win, 2 loss non-conference record, leaving the team with a 9-win, 10-loss overall record. This year's J .V . squad developed the philosophy of team spirit and team cohesive ness. Their main em- phasis was on learning and developing the same style of play as used by the Varsity team. Leading individuals on the team, as voted by their teammates, were: Most Valuable Player, Geoff Kotila, who was also the leading scorer and second leading rebounder. The Most Improved player was Robert Hayes. The player voted as having the best attitude was Tim Hackney, who was the second lead- ing scorer. Under the direction of a new coach, Miss Bodeau, the Glen Lake Girls' Varsity Basketball team was lead through a good season. The team traveled around the area competing against other Class D schools, not knowing what kind of team they would come up against next, since this was their first year of competition. The girls ended their sea- son with a 7-5 record. For competing in their first tournament game, the girls did very well, but they could not manage the de- feat of Frankfort, thus ending their season. The Lady Lakers 52 53 Matmen! 54 The graplers ripped through a 15 dual-meet and 7 tournament slate, compiling a 3-12 dual-meet record and having several grapplers place in the various tournaments, including our own Takedown Tourney. In Regional competition Mike Weison, Dave Eimers, Tom Savage, and Steve Fryer took 1st; Joe Dechow took 2nd; and Mark Post and Raymond Flowers took 3rd. The four 1st place finishers went to State Competition where they all placed 4th. In post-season awards, Tom Savage took the MVP Award, the Coaches' Award, the Takedown Award; and the Wrestler of the Year Award; Joe Dechow took the most improved honors. Five new school records were set. Ray Flowers set the record for the fastest pin. Tom Savage broke 4 records; most notably, the number of takedowns in a season and in a career. With nine lettermen returning next year, Coach Jones expects a fine team. 55 56 LEFT TO RIGHT: Allan Jankowski, Gary Jakielek, Pekka Sintola, Dave Gillen, Mimi Brunet, Brian Hochstein, Linda Deering, John Stanz, Tim Gillen; Miss Jody Almon, Coach. «► Conference Champs The boy's ski team compiled a 7-1 record this year, while the girl's managed a 1-3 mark. This was Glen Lake's first season with a ski team. Many of the teams' members had never raced before, but that did not show up in their results. A lot of hard work, coached by Jody Aim on, contrib- uted to the team's fine records. Miss Almon is a form- er Junior National Ski Team champion. This year's inductees included five seniors; Janet Brzezinski, Peg- gy Fitzpatrick, Peggy Lanham, Sue Richardson, and Patti Schopieray; and ten juniors; Carl Bamum, Dawn Cherry, Tom Ford, Anne Hayes, Vicki Marach, Arlene Peplinski, Theresa Savage, Michelle Shalda, Kae Sutherland, and Julie Weeks. The ceremony was conducted by last year's inductees, Beth Bolton, Steve Cherry, Cheryl Czerniak, John Fitzpatrick, Roxane Lambkin, and Joy Zimmerman, with assistance from their advisor, Mr. Rader. Mrs. Binsfeld and Mrs. Roe were the main speakers of the evening, with Mr. Milks acting as Master of Ceremonies. 99 The Curious Savage The 1973-1974 Glen Lake Drama Club performed The Curious Savage by John Patrick. Mrs. Ethel P. Savage is a sweet, wealthy widow. Her three step- children have her committed to a sanitarium because she tries to give away the family fortune through a Happiness Fund. At the sanitarium she realizes that the inmates are more genuine people and have more compassion for other people than her step-children from the outside world. She shows how sane people can go to insane extremes just to satisfy their greed in a truly funny and heart-warming story. Under the direction of Miss Carlisle and Beth Bolton, two performences were given on May 9th and 10th. The audience truly appreciated and responded to the gentle humor of the story. These dreams set things for us to reach for, some attainable and others not. Everyone should strive for these dreams, for they are one of the biggest facets of life. Without them, you have no hope, but only existence. In a poem by Langston Hughes, he puts it as: Hold fast to dreams, For if dreams die. Life is a broken winged bird That cannot fly. Steven Gerard Cherry, Salutatorian 103 104 For the past 17, 18, 19 years you the parents, teach- ers, and all of our relatives have led us down the path of life. It is now our turn to walk down that path taking with us all of the knowledge that you have bestowed upon us. There is a poem that has been hanging on our refrigerator which has been my in- spiration through my high school years. It was written by Edward Everret Hale and is titled ONLY ONE. There is a message in it for everyoile, young and old. Only One I am only one But still I am one. I cannot do everything But still I can do something, And because I cannot do everything I will not refuse to do the something That I can do.
