The Lakers began the season by being the only team in the NWM Conference to win its non-conference game with an exciting 22-20 win over Lake City. The significance of this win was shown when Lake City went on to be rated in the state. The second game was probably the best victory ever achieved by a Glen Lake squad. Having a new scoreboard and playing under new lights with a large crowd of supporters at the sidelines, the Lakers trounced the Elk Rapids Elks 28-8. Next in the way of the Laker juggernaut were the hopeless Leelanau Indians who were mauled by Glen Lake 70-0. The Lakers continued their string with a convincing 62-22 win over Kingsley. At this point, with four straight wins, the Lakers were rated for the first time ever. They received a rating of 20th in the DETROIT FREE PRESS poll. A tenacious defense was the mark of the next two games when the offense bogged down. An 8-8 tie was managed with Frankfort and a heartbreaking 7-0 loss to Mesick. The Lakers got back on the winning side with 28-13 win over Brethren. The Lakers were then bombed by Benzie Central 46- 6 in the season final, but achieved the distinction of being the only team in the conference to score on Benzie, with a pass from Rick Winowiecki to Tom Chase. In individual statistics, the Lakers placed four in the top twelve of the scoring race. Jack Gillen was first with 76 points; Mike Burritt, 4th;Tom Chase, 9th; and Tim Sutherland, 11th. Jack Gillen had 867 yards rushing and Mike Burritt 572 yards to lead the team in rushing. Tim Sutherland had 16 catches, good for 432 yards in the passing category. Jack Gillen and Mike Burritt led in tackles with 88 and 87 respec- tively. Four Lakers were chosen for the All-Conference team. Players included Jack Gillen and Garth Greenan on defense, and Mike Burritt, Ron Novak, and Tim Sutherland on offense. 45 46 JV FOOTBALL. The Lakers played their own brand of basketball, which was constantly beirg perfected. The set-line-up was proven to be most effective when they greatly threatened Benzie Central, the top-dog in the NWM Conference. The Lakers held Benzie to their lowest point total of the year, and also their closest victory, 67-59. Glen Lake took part in the Class D District Tournament at Traverse City, playing the Leland Comets. This was perhaps the most exciting game of the year. With only two minutes left on the clock, the Lakers came from seven points behind and beat the Comets 50-48. The Lakers then took a hard 57-71 loss to Northport, dropping out of the tournaments and completing the season with an overall record of 7-12. Mike Burritt earned a position on the A11-Conference team by placing 3rd in Conference scoring and 1st in rebounding. Coach Ben Johnson selected Mike Burritt as his most valuable player and sophomores Tom Chase and Keith Shimek as the most improved players. Forensics, a new addition to our curriculum this year, has stimulated an interest and increased the scope of communication skills in both the high school and the community. Forensics encompasses all areas in the communicative field: debate, dramatics, dis- cussion, oral interpretation, and public speaking. 90 Paul Binsfeld, a senior, placed second at the regional forensics tournament at Gaylord. This was one of the largest regional tournaments, hosting schools from the entire northern and central parts of Michigan. Paul has had the benefit of radio announcing on WGLH, the new student station here at Glen Lake. The station, which began just last October, broadcasts daily during the students lunch period with music and news. Jack Gillen took first place in extempore speaking, Paul Binsfeld captured first place in radio broadcasting, while Ross Cate came in second place in serious interpretive readings, as did Joanne Cotton in declamation. 91 Senior Directory JUDITH A.
