CONTENTS Administration........ 7 Seniors...............15 Activities............23 Juniors...............31 Sophomores............35 Organizations.........39 Classes...............45 Sports................49 Advertising...........59 1963 GLEN LAKE HIGH SCHOOL MAPLE CITY, MICHIGAN He Always Finds Time to Lend a Helping Hand Some expert assistance in building a bicycle cart aids 9th grader Jim De- Long in this shop project. Mr. Bolton advises all handi-crafters to save time and money by spend- ing effort at the planning stage. Eugene Wilcox, senior, displays his prize win- ning Science Fair entry. Although he placed second both this year and last, Eugene feels it was a worthwhile experience to enter competi- tion. Here Mr. B congratulates Willie on his achievements. Last year's regional winner, Bill Dickenson, who now attends CALVIN COLLEGE in Grand Rapids, was the lucky Science Fair contestant who attended the World Fair in Seattle, Wash- ington. DEDICA TION To a fine teacher who always finds time to lend a helping hand, who has inspired students in science and shop, who has guided several Science Fair winners, this book is proudly dedicated. His contagious smile and under- standing humor has brightened the halls of Glen Lake High since the first day of classes in 1958. His special efforts have helped many to a more apprecia- tive way of learning and a great pride in our growing institution. HIS SPECIAL INTERESTS Hunting and fishing His six lively children Building a snow-removal machine that can't fail. His lovely wife St. Philips Church His woodland farm Any handi-craft project MR. WILLIAM BOLTON Off on a flying trip to this year's National Science Fair in Alburquer- que, New Mexico, Mr. Bolton ac- companied re- gional winners, Bob Schultz of Glen Lake High and Gary Strong of Traverse City High. Duane Richardson is introduced to President Kennedy by Michigan Senator Philip Hart, at the White House. Just one more picture, please, was the familiar phrase heard by this group wherever they went. CLASS OF ’62 ACCLAIMED DELUXE TOUR OF WASHINGTON, D.C. ENJOTED BT ALL GRADUA TES How-do-you-do, Mr. President, Glen Lake graduates responded to President Kennedy's warm welcome at a White House Lawn reception. Beneath the Capitol dome, a brief rest was a welcome relief. Chaperones for the entire trip were Miss Doris Brammer, Mr. Mrs. Jack Barratt, Mr. Mrs. Harold Sweeney, and Mr. Mrs. Don Goodson. FOR UNSELFISH DEED Just fabulous, said everyone in describing the dream-com e-true trip to Washington. It all came about because this group of gradu- ates unselfishly gave up all plans to visit the capitol city when class- mate, Duane Richardson became ill with cancer. They preferred to finance his operation and forget their planned senior trip. But amazed state politicians who heard of this deed, decided such generosity was worthy of acclaim. Result: a deluxe, red carpet, never to-be for- gotten tour of our nation's capitol. All aborad for a gala train trip thanks to the hos- pitality of the B O railroad company. 5 SENIOR EDITOR Martin Basch JUNIOR EDITOR Linda Sullivan BUSINESS MANAGER Staff Franklin Quimby Tom Barrett Diane Novak Ann Marie Mikowski Beverly Mazurek ACTIVITIES EDITOR Staff Diana Rowell Karen Novak Jo Erin Wright Cynthia Sheridan SPORTS EDITOR Eric Shafer STUDENT PHOTOGRAPHER Richard Quimby II Advisors: Mrs. Marjorie Barrett Mr. Gordon Kelly Professional Photographer: Mr. Charles Baldwin, Traverse City BOARD OF EDUCA TION Left to right, SITTING: Mr. Ellsworth Faulman, President; Mr. Robert Manning, Trustee; Mr. Edward Cherry, Trustee; Mr. Joseph Shimek, Trustee. The Queen gets expert help from her mother, Mrs. Ransom. Here the entire court poses for the camera bugs. 25 Chet Salisbury and Sandra Holds share a laugh with Ida Bijkersma and John Hutchinson. Exchange Students Gave fest and Glamour to Our Way of Living — For the first time, Glen Lake High had a truly international flavor this year Ida Bij- kersma, exchange student from the Nether- lands attended all year as a senior. Ida was a popular speaker at many local affairs and lent her charms to all school events. She was the guest of her American family, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Holds of Empire. John Hutchinson of Mexico City only stayed for two months but the freshman class became much better informed about our Latin American neighbors. In turn, John was de- lighted to see snow, and keenly enjoyed winter sports. John was the guest of Chet Salisbury of Empire. 26 (Above) the tenth grade girls imitate a typical gym session. (Left) Arlene Darga, Judy Meeuwenburg and Helen Gauthier do a comical skit. 27 Pardon, my boarding house reach, but, Karen's hungry! 28 GIRLS, GIRLS, GIRLS Barbara Wames, junior, eagerly tells about her good fortune to be chosen as representative to attend the Wolverine Girls' State. Dorothy Fabiszak and Charlene Winowiecki congratulate her and wish her all the best on her nine day stay at the University of Michigan, beginning Jun 18th. The ninth grade girls show off their culinary skills in Mrs. House's class. We have hall monitors, a code of dress for both school and activities; we have enjoyed dances that were put on by the student council. The Student Council is now a member of Northwest C Conference Association and has participated in various N.C.S.C.A. activities throughout the year. 41 The Editors, along with the rest of the staff, brought forth a very interesting monthly newspaper, The Quest. Tracy Wright, editor-in-chief, confers with Sports editor, Dennis Richardson, Business editor, Richard Quimby, Feature editor, Mary Ellen Novak, News editor, Tom Barrett. Using their greatest effort to produce a neat, typewritten paper for the stu- dents of Glen Lake High School are Nancy Miller, Millie Rice, and Mary Jane Bartunek.
