So loth we part from all we love, From all the links that bind us; So turn our hearts, as on we row, To those we've lift behind us! When, round the bowl, of banish'd years We talk with joyous seeming-- With smiles that might as well be tears, So faint, so sad their beaming; While memory brings us back again Each early tie that twined us, O, sweet's the cup that circles then To those we've left behind us! Thomas Moore EVER SAILING NEVER DRIFTING iT '' ■ 1960 SENIORS As members of the first graduating class of Glen Lake High School who hav e spent four full years as a consolidated group, we would like to thank the voters who made this possible. We have cheered our boys to a state basketball victory. We have watched our school become accredited. In general, we have had four very active years. We would like to thank our teachers and adminis- trators who have helped make our high school years happy and worth- while ones. Whether studying, plan- ning, or working together, the juniors had a most satisfying time to- gether. This was the year they received their class rings, a continual reminder all through their lives of class associations. The Juniors sponsored two dances, which were a lot of fun. They also had the Junior-Senior Prom, which is an annual event. As they take the final step in their high school education they hope that they may contribute something to help make their stay at Glen Lake high school worth while. The sophomores took part in many school activ- ities, such as band, glee club, Latin club, Echo staff, pep club, cherry pie baking contest, and many other school affairs. The class contri- buted eleven players to the varsity football squad, two to the varsity basketball team, seven to the junior varsity team, and three to the girls' basketball team. Again this year the sophomores sold popcorn at the home basketball games to earn money for their senior trip. The class is looking forward to two more happy, active years at Glen Lake High School. The first attempt at a class project was successful, a skating party. Planning organizing, working together was an invaluable experience for future years. Freshmen participated in most of the varied school activities, in- cluding the football squad, junior varsity basketball team, girls' bas- ketball team, pep club, Latin club, debate team, journalism club, band, and the newspaper staff. The class looks forward to 1960-1961 with high hopes for even a better year. Not Pictured: Fred Gauthier. VARSITY BASKETBALL The Varsity Lakers played championship basketball throughout the 1959-1960 season with a 17-2 record of wins and losses. Glen Lake's winning streak of 27 consecutive victories was halted--temporarily --by Suttons Bay, in an upset which stunned everybody at first, but which alerted the Lakers to the kind of playing that brought them only one other defeat (St. Fran- cis, in a non-conference game). The Lakers were on top in return games’with these two foes. Coach Harold O'Brien looks to some fast juniors and sophomores, and in-com- ing freshmen to carry the ball for the Lakers in the 1960-1961 season. They were champion players, helping win three Cherryland Conference victories. Not pictured is Tom Barczak, No. 14 in above picture. Carole Wepking, Captain Marlene Persik, Sandy Kelenske, Linda Lanham. Our cheerleaders have worked hard this year, cheering our boys on to many victories. Although they were placed second by the judges at tournament time they did an excellent job all the way through the year and certainly rate first with all of us. 25 LAKERETTES GIRL8' ’TEAM I OUTSIDE CIRCLE: Linda Lanham, Sonja Craven, Ann Jankowski, Rita Wrisley, Colleen Miller, Judy Wooters, Mrs. Fred Lanham, Coach, Janice Olsen, Janet House, Patricia Stocking, Shirley Goodrick, Carole Wepking, Marcia Burry. INSIDE CIRCLE: Tracy Wright, Sharen Carpenter, Linda Nash, Nancy Olsen, Sara Barclay, Charlotte Grubb, Susan Schmidt, Margaret Dean. The Lakerettes, although they put forth much effort and determination, didn't have a very successful season. The girls lacked height and experience but they made up for it by being aggressive. Next year we are hoping for a girls' athletic program so that the girls' team may have a chance to improve. JUNIOR VARSITY CHEERLEADERS Janice Olsen Rita Wrisley Carol Schaub Kathy Morris, Captain JUNIOR HIGH AND GIRLS' CHEERLEADERS FRONT ROW: James Scott, Lee Lawson, Gerald Prause, Bob Schultz, Pat Taghon, Edward Panek, Fred Lanham. 2nd ROW: Larry Lawson (Mgr.), Leigh Payment, Tony Stefaniak, Fritz Barratt, Garth House, Dan Weber, Doug Endsley, Coach John Eichstadt. Not Pictured: Duane Richardson. Coach John Eichstadt's JVs played fast basketball and lost some close ones by one or two points. The 8 wins and 9 losses just don't tell the whole story! The Junior High team, coached by Robert Garthe has some potential Lakers on hand with standout playing in all positions. FRONT ROW: Charles Shimek Don Bloswick Raymond Warnes Bob Faulman Bruce Killingbeck Terry Miller Leon Garvin BACK ROW: Gary Hohnke Larry Lawson Coach Robert Garthe Dennis Richardson Jim Shorter JUNIOR HIGH 27 Thirty-two young athletes waited expectantly for the first football practice of the Glen Lake Community High School football team. The big day arrived and clad in strange apparel reminiscent of the Gladiators of old, these young men began calisthenics and conditioning exercises basic to their grid-iron education. Day after day this squad worked, sweated and thrived on the spirit and drive to excel in this varsity sport. Thru three scrimmages and four games every one of these boys proved that they could take it and began learning the fundamentals necessary to dish it out. Two hours a day, five days a week for nine weeks these young Lakers competed, banged heads and steadily improved not only in football, but in scholastics, physical development and sportsmanship. A successful season? Immensely. Just ask those who participated. Win or lose we continued to improve, never losing our desire to excel. Keep this in mind: Plato said, The beginning is the most important part of% the work. Well--we've begun.
