The evening's program began with the band playing several numbers. Then everyone was invited to attend the ministrel show, directed by Miss Gaston. Several numbers were presented. The two ends were darkies played by Joe Morris and Ronald Studer. At the close of the program, Mrs. Morris introduced Mephisto, the class mascot, who gave the audience quite a horse laugh. Everyone then came to visit the Midway where they bought confetti, paper hats, hot dogs, and what have you. They played bingo, visited the fortune teller, the art gallery, the hobby show, museum, and the Mexican Garden where Mexican food was served. Others threw balls at milk bottles, fished in the pond, sent telezrams, or just had a good social time with their friends. The House of Terror was a very popular place, where Charley Wiss, the wild man, made chills and shivers tingle up many people's spines. There were sixteen hobby displays in the Hobby Show with Mrs. Frank Humes winning the adult prize for her salt and pepper shakers, and John Bookless, the children's prize with his models. Other attractions were the turkey raffle, with Ruth Ann Reid, Dwight Timbers, and Leo Wagner as winners, the cake-walk where there were ten lucky winners, and the crowning of the carnival queen. Dortha Mae Weidenhaft, a senior, was crowned queen and presented with a Parker pen 'as a souvenir. Her attendents, Reta Stuart, junior, Joan Porter, sophomore, and Joyce Neifert, freshman, were given corsages of white carnations. The seniors wish to express their appreciation to each of you for your wonderful support and contributions which made their carnival a success. l1llLn.a....l l ILAIOUK' ne ,gif QLQIILID .n....l llalllll' IILMH7' l3ZIFl.'ZIlEI1I1'P2IlP 1llI'l.1Ll1'EI1lI K, Q Sjgllllhilg, Qllzlg IS, 15147 Q F-fight Cl9'rlv.n'la IllllllllIlllIIIIIllllllllllllllllllllll Processional The Creation, Hayden Band Invocation Music Let Thy iShield Defend Us, Weber-Springer Mixed Ensemble Music When Soft Voices Die, Shelby-Taylor Girls' Glee Club Sernmon Pfepizring for Life's Journey Reir. Graduation ll tl ll. ll nl ml llll ll IK ll 17 ' SALUTATCJRY Classmates, Faculty, Parents, Board of Education and other Friends: Under the title of salutatorian, it has become my privilege to extend to you the pleasure and delight of the class of 1947 in having you here with us this evening and to welcome you to our commencement exercises. Tonight marks another milestone in our journey through life, the end of our high school days. It is indeed a happy occasion, but still our hearts are sad because tomorrow each of us will go his way. To some it will mean the commencement of higher educational work, to others the beginning of business life or home cares. Nevertheless. we hope never to stop learn- ing whether in school or out. Our task now will be to make use of the education we have acquired to nut forth our best efforts in every way possible to further the prcgress of this great country. Our high school days have been filled with joy and happiness along with a great deal of hard work, and they will linger forever in the memories of each and everyone of us. We realize that it has been through the efforts, thoughtfulness, and co-operation of our teachers, parents, and friends that these past four years at G. E. H. S. have been very educational as well as enjoyable. We sincerely thank you for your guidance and help during these years, as we shall always be grateful to you. Now as I close, again 1 wish to say, we welcome you. --Charlene Kohler VALEDICTCIRY We build the ladder by which we climb. Classmates and Friends: The motto of the twenty-three Seniors of the class of 1947 is, We build the ladder by which we climb. Throughout our school year you, through your sacrifices and help. have been helping us build our lad- ders. Graduation from high school is perhaps one of the most important rungs in our ladders. By placing this rung in our ladders tonight, we ended a part which, if we have accepted its offered opportunities and resulting experiences to the utmost, will help us build higher ladders to the planes of success, happiness and good citizenship. We, as the citizens of tomorrow, must do our best to promote peace in this new Atomic Age by giving full, intelligent support to our churches, school, homes and our local, state, and national governments. We have perhaps a more diflicult task and a more important challenge to meet than has had any generation of young people who have gone before, that of preserving this world in its entirety for our children and grandchildren. Our ladders are not complete--indeed they never can be, but although sad at the thought of leaving our underclassmates, the halls that seem a part of us and all the little things that mean so much, we are happy, awed, and perhaps a little afraid of the challenge that awaits us--that of securing and maintaining peace--peace of mind, soul and body for the people and nations which will follow us. With these thoughts we leave you with a thankfulness to you in our hearts which we can never express. --Evelyn Steele Glenna .1-...I I llnlllll ', ll' 417' AND IN THE YEAR 2022 Ah, what have we here? A grave yard in a far corner of the world. Amid tangled briars and weeds gray tombstones loom forward. But look--such strange inscriptions, Father Time 1892, Father Time, 1929, 1930, 1940, and there that large one Father Time 1947! Seventy-five years ago he passed on leaving twenty-three G. E. H. S. Seniors with only memories. We touch the headstone and call softly, Awake, Father 1947, arise and make your way around the earth and bring us a report on the lives of that brilliant class of animated studentsf' Father 1947 rises mistily, and whispers softlv, Sleep, I will return presently. Here is the report he brought: I spirited myself over much country until, while passing over a coun- try grave yard, I saw the spires of the city in the distance. I sank down on a tombstone to rest and noted the inscription. It read, Sir Richard Dean, millionaire playboy, who married John's other wife, and who wouldn't open the door. Off to a good start, I thought to myself, and continued to- ward the city. I entered -a large park and came face to face with a huge bronze statue of two tired looking women. The inscription on the base read, J oy Forster and Berta Lou McFarland, pioneers of education and aggressive in work- ing for the rights of under privileged students burdened with tests. I spied a newspaper, yellow with age, caught in a crevice of the statue. The date was 1972 and the headlines read B. J. Ahlvers, greatest woman scientist since Madame Kilroy, has discovered an astounding remedy for fatuitousness. Her helpmate, Martha Betz, upon whom the remedy was tried, lost fifty pounds in three days by eating a certain kind of horse-radish soup. I also read an article by Robert L. Weidenhaft, the world famous bachelor and bookkeeping expert. He expounded a new theory called the Weidenhaft Edict. The theory was, if you want to be rolling in the dough take up baking, not bookkeeping. Leaving the park, I passed an office building, where pert stenograph- ers were pounding away on the Weidenhaft Special, perfected by the re- nowned typist, Marjorie Weidenhaft. Farther on, I passed the Weidenhaft School of Shorthand founded in 1962 by Dorotha Mae Weidenhaft. I picked up a newspaper, hot off the press, and in the Fifty Years Ago Today column, I read of a banquet given by society 's number one matron, Geneva Neifert, in honor of the World famous authority on American His- tory, Newell Eberle. The entertainment was provided by Ruby Cooper and her Tromboneneers. Flitting along, Ireached New York City and entered the cool halls of Carnegie Hall. There I found two busts done in gold plate of Arleta White and Virgina Shoemaker dubbed by critics as the best cowgirl duet team of the twentieth century. In Europe they were known as the Two Sharps. Picking upa current magazinel became deeply interested in an article written as a tribute to the late Donna J. Jones, a social worker who wal instrumental in cleaning up of the slum area of the great western Ileuam .ami I Imam! ', limi'-57 metropolis, Solomon Rapids. Leaving the Hall to get my bearings,Iinves- tigated and found that the street I was on was known as Clark Street, named for Emojean Clark, who compounded a recipe for the Clark-X- Candy bar, containing cod liver oil. While passing along the street, I was almost deafened by a radio announcer who expostulated: The record for the mile run, set by Duane Fleetfoot Wiss in 1951, has just been broken by Turtlepace Timbers Tuttle, grandson of Bernita Timbers Tuttle, noted woman equestrian. I sighed almost audibly to myself, These '47ers surely got around fast. I wafted myself into a neai by library and soon became engrossed in a book titled How to Raise Cane and Grow Lazy, written by Cecil Winkel, the most noted agriculturist of his day. Finding the library rather stuffy,I decided to visit the old home town of these '47ers. There I found the .local high school team receiving the Studer Cup in matching pennies. Both the cup and pennies were furnished to county tournaments in the will of the late coach, Max Studer. In spirit- ing by a small music store, I noticed a sign reading Songs by Charlene. From a conversation of two anile women I learn that a book of priceless compositions by Charlene Kohler, titled It's All Wet, had been recently discovered in an old well. On a billboard just outside the city, I read Use Virginiae Alberte Lipstick -- won't smudge, won't rub oif, won't get you a man! On another billboard I read, Get your pure blooded alley cats from the Steele cat farm, founded by the reposed Evelyn J. Steele in 1999. One more to go, I thought happily to myself. Where will I find him? As I floated lazily across the Solomon, I spied a white bearded fisherman drowsing on the bank. Iflitted close and from a vest pocket I saw a bottle protruding. The label read Live-long pills by Chas. Fisher. Then I came back here to resume my well deserved rest. S., and painted in the colors of blue and silver. At the take-off of the first year on a September day in 1943, this party of twenty-nine adventurers packed their baggage and started out, little knowing if they would ever see their friends and homes again. Here we have a picture ofthe travelers as they are ready to bid farewell. 'Ihey selected for their motto, We Build the Ladder by Which We Climb. Oh, what a day of excitement when they began to go aboard their blue and silver plane! 'Twas quite a picturesque scene seeing those youngsters walking up the gangplank of G. E. H. S., their arms loaded with books, pads, pencils, and their minds with open doors in quest for the riches of Bookland. ' Officials in charge were Dorotha Mae Weidenhaft as Pilot, Richard Dean as Co-Pilot, and Max Stucler as Recorder and Financier. The spon- sor was Miss Margaret Henry. Their first stop was on the planet of Neptune. The bright lights of this planet spotted each Freshman and initiated them at the first Senior chapel. Their first social gathering was on Tuesday, September 28, when all mem- bers aboard enjoyed a picnic in the Lowdermilk pasture. The evening was spent playing baseball and other games. Other parties were held during this year. Then we took off toward the second heavenly body, Jupiter. This year our Pilot was Geneva Neifertg Co-Pilot, Donna Jones, Recorder and Finan- cier, Robert Hardestvg and sponsor, Miss Butts. We left behind us Marjorie Wiens and Weldon Luckey, but took 'aboard Ruby Cooper. One of the social events for this year was a farewell party for Robert Hardesty. After seeing the Seniors of 1945 graduate, we began to make prepara- tions for visiting planet number three, Venus. Leaving behind us Lou Vena Hughes, Lois Ahlvers, Rosella Fisher, Willis Bailey, and Robert Hardesty and took on Evelyn Steele, V. Ann Seidel, and Max Sutton. Donna Jones acted as Pilot, Bernita Timbers, Cc-Pilot, and Charlene Kholer, Recorder and Financier. Mrs. Clover was sponsor. This group acted as hosts and hostesses to a Senior reception for the class of 1946, amidst a Spring setting. In the fall of 1945, twentyathree Seniors stayed together for the final trip to Mars. Another change in oflicial staii' was made with Bonnie Ahlvers as Pilot, Virginia Shoemaker as Co-Pilotg and Joyce Forster, Recorder, and Max Studer, as Financier. Mrs. Morris was sponsor. A fall Carnival was held and everyone who attended had great fun. The funds from this event were used on the sneak to Denver and Colorado Springs. In January the class honored Mr. Sutcliff at a birthday party, present- ing him a gift. In May they were guests of the Juniors at a Reception. They returned on May 20, with a diploma in hand as an award for this four-year journey. QL 15 :ua .a....l I :mem 5 llemiar SENNDR SNEAK On April third at 3 p.m. a caravan of six cars bid farewell to G. E. H. S' and headed for the Great West. The party broke into groups about 6:30 p.m. and supped at Hill City and Hoxie. After having considerable tire and other car trouble and combat- ing a heavy fog, the party arrived intermittently in Denver between 2:30 and 4:00 where we checked in at the De Soto Hotel. Friday morning found us at the top of the State Capitol Building. VVe were fortunate to visit the House of Representatives while in session. From there we visited the State Museum where many relics of interest were seen and the Art Gallery with its priceless oil paintings and other master- pieces created by artistic minds. Our excursion also included the U. S. Mint, where we were guided through the halls of this well-fortified building where we saw the minting process of different coins. Each had the privilege of lifting a 517,000 gold brick. Ahigh spot of this tour was the City Park with its Zoo and Museum of Natural History. Here we not only saw many different live animals in captivity, but also the skilled workmanship of 'raxidermists of placing nature's birds and beasts in their true setting of reality. In the evening the group attended the picture show, My Favorite Brunettef' Saturday morning it was announced on KOA that the Glen Elder Seniors were visiting the radio station while on their sneak. At last the secret was out for were we missed before ?J Following this broadcast, we began our scenic tour of the Rockies stopping at Buffalo BilI's Grave on Mt. Lookout. At noon we picnicked at Bergen Park amidst the tall pines and rustic setting. p ln the afternoon we visited the famous Red Rocks Park with its new open air theater, Troutdale in the Pines, a magnificent resort, and Tiny Town. We arrived in the evening at Manitou where we stayed at Buffalo Lodge, one of the most elite and classic lodges of the West. We arose at 4:15 Easter morning and joined the pilgrimage of 25,000 worshipers to attend the Easter Sunrise Service in nature's own sanctuary at the Garden of the Gods. Q We then visited the Cave of the Winds seeing the wondrous and rare crystal formations of the ages past. We started homeward at 11:00, dined at Limon at 1:00, and supped in Hill City. We announced our return to Glen Elder at 10:30 by blasting our horns as we drove around the square, with the exception of one group. They were delayed in Hoxie for repairs, but returned safe and sound to Glen Elder on Monday evening: W All expressed of experiencing a wonderful time, which shall always be a memorable recollection of their Senior year. Drivers, their wives, and sponsors who accompanied the seniors on their sneak were the Doyle Neiferts, the Carmen Harrisons, the Dwight Timbers, the Earl Whites, the Dwight Hamptons, Mrs. Morris, and Mr. Sutclilf.
