The record which they have achieved is one of which all may be proud, for it refiects teamwork, good sportsmanship, and loyalty. This victory completes Coach Hampton's fourth year as coach of the Bearcats of Glen Elder High, and this school feel.s very fortunate to have had such a well-qualified athletic trainer during these four seasons. Because of a small class the biology students have been able to work with the microscopes several times during the year. Although the general science class is a larger one and they have not been able to conduct any experiments, the students have found it very in- teresting to discuss the various things. All in all, the students feel they have spent a very worth-while and interesting year in these classes. G. E. H. 5. PRINT SHOP The printing class is divided into two groups with 'ten students in each group. Among the many things printed this year are stationery, typing progress records, programs, work sheets, book report blanks, posters, meal tickets, football and basketball schedules and tickets, report cards, enrollment cards, church programs and W. S. C. S. booklets, pep club constitutions, football banquet equipment, the Hi Echoes bi-weekly, and the 1945 Gold and Black. The classes, under Mr. Sutcliff's supervision, feel that they accom- plished much and have saved the school considerable expense. rmef mm mlmus M ATH E MATI CS The algebra class consists of 25 members, 9 girls and 16 boys. George Betz received the highest grade in the January Emporia Test in Algebra L making only one error. The year was spent in learning the principles of factoring, extracting square roots, and working with polynomials. This class was taught by Miss McDonald. There are 28 members in the geometry class, which is taught by Miss McDonald also. Geneva Neifert lead the class in the January Emporia Test. Her score was 54 out of a possible 63. - They were taught the usual study of theorems and constructions. There are 17 boys in the advanced mathematics class, both juniors and seniors. This subject is taught every other year. Miss McDonald taught this class the first semester and the last semester she was aided by Mr. Sutcliff who taught 3 days out of every week. This class took up the principles of solving equations by graphs, solving roots, solving quadratic and radical equations, logarithms, etc. SDCIAL SCIENCE Fifty-three juniors and seniors spent two very worth-while semesters studying American history, constitution, and international relations under the instruction of Miss McDonald. These subjects are required in order that we may acquire a better knowledge of our government, the relations be- tween other countries, and the history back of our government so that we may make it better in the future. rnef mm :mmm f SHDRTHAND A 1 Bec ause of the shortage of teachers, shorthand was taken by corre- spondence from Kansas University. Mrs. Ralph Morris was supervisor in handling material and giving dictation. At the beginning of the course the second year students were taking 60 words per minute. At the end of the first semester they doubled their speed by taking 120 words per minute. At the end of the first semester most of the first year students were taking shorthand at the rate of 40 words per minute. TYPING In spite of constant changes of instructors the typing classes have gone ahead in their work and have gained much valuable knowledge of this ever-useful subject. War-time shortages of typewriter servicemen and new parts have made typewriter maintenance a difficult jobg however, Mr. Sutcliff has man- aged to keep the greater number of the machines in good running condition. There are 17 students enrolled in typing I and 19 enrolled in typing II. 1rsmef .m.mu lnmuth. NDRMALTRAHHNE A There are seven students enrolled in Normal Training this year. They are as follows: Mary Jean Fenner, Marjorie Forster, Myrth Shoemaker, Opal Shoemaker, Dorothy McCune, Virginia Vint, and Robert White. 1 The subjects taken the first semester were phychology, grammar, and reading. The second semester subjects were geography, methods, manage- ment, and arithmetic. The normal training teachers are Mrs. Morris, Miss Butts, and Mr. Sutcliff. ENGUSH The Glen Elder High School has English rhetorics for the first se- mester for the Freshman, Sophomores, and Juniors. The Junior class began the second semester studying Shakespearean plays. Some of the Sophomore students have written poems. Miss Butts has been the English and literature teacher this year. irnef mlmi mmm BUCIKEEPING The bookkeeping class is composed of twenty-one students, eight boys and thirteen girls. The class is instructed by Mr. Hampton. The purpose of the class is to learn the secret of keeping books neatly and accurately. Most of our Work is done in class so that each student may benefit more from it. MANUAL TRAINING The manual training class this year did not make cedar chests or many of the advanced projects because of the shortage of the finer woods. Instead, ladders, saw-horses, chicken feeders, and tool boxes were made, and many refinishing jobs were done by the class. Mr. Hampton held the freshman and sophomore classes together be- cause of his short time limit. Ilhaef mlmud llllrfllilfli FOODS In daily life food and nutrition play a very important part. Foods girls must know what food to eat, how to prepare and serve it attractively. Besides their regular class Work before Christmas, they 'brought sugar from home and made candy. They popped corn for sale 'at the county tournament. Their last activity other than regular class work was as waitresses at the Junior-Senior Banquet. CLOTHING This year's clothing class consisted of nine girls. Because of the scar- city of material, the clothing class did not make the articles usually re- quired. Some studying was done in addition to the sewing. Recitation work included personal grooming, color study, and selection of clothing. The girls feel credit is due Mrs. Clover, who has been a patient instruc- tor. The class has learned a great deal this year which will help them the rest of their lives in making and selecting their wardrobes. Thefg und Blflljf TEEN-AGE ANTICS -E-1:1-1931 , FFIQ3 5. During the first part of the second half in the Osborne game, Max Eberle had the misfortune to break his leg, and was unable to play the rest of the year. The Saturday night following the Osborne game Robert Hardesty was in an automobile accident, and he was also unable to play. Everal Thurston had to drop out on account of physical disabilities. The record speaks' for itself in telling how the Bearcats played this sea- son. The music department has been greatly handicapped this year by the shortage of teachers, but Mrs. Morris met with the glee club twice a week and helped them learn some new numbers. The girls have learned the school song in 3 parts, written parodies to melodies of popular songs for pep songs, and sung both classical and pop- ular music. They have enjoyed their music work, and they feel that the time has been spent in a very worthwhile way. O. Sutcliff Senior Class rnrmf mmd mmm WELCOME Faculty, Parents, and Friends of the Class of 1945: lt is with happy hearts that we, the Class of 1945, bid you welcome tonight. On this final night of our high school career we find ourselves greatly indebted to our teachers, parents, and the citizens of this community who have aided us in our search for an education. We have worked hard during these high school days that are drawing to a close, but now we realize how much more difficult work is ahead of us. It is not with regret that we speak of the work that has come our way, for we have made many friendships that will go through life with us. Our high school days have been full of many different activities besides stud4 ies which are an important factor in the lives of everyone. For twelve years we have looked forward to this night of graduation, and now tonight, as we reach that goal, our hearts seem heavy for this will mean the parting from our class members. Our best wishes and prayers are with the many boys who are now fighting and dying so that we may have a better world in which to live. We should be grateful to them because we have had a much better chance than many other young people in this world, and it is now up to us to aid them so that their efforts will not have been in vain. In this new world there is a task for each of us, and it is only by determination that we can reach that distant hope for which our high school teachers have been help- ing us to prepare.-June Morris. FAREWELL Classmates, Parents, Faculty, Board of Education, and Other Friends: Tonight marks the closing of another chapter in our book of life. We have now finished three chapters-the first, the years we spent in playing, the second, the eight years in grade school, and the third, these past four years we have spent in high school. Tonight we shall begin on the first page of chapter four, an entirely new and different chapter than any we have yet seen. But I believe that we have a firm and sturdy foundation, acquired right here in Glen Elder High School-a foundation built of knowledge, truth, and fairness. For this foundation we are sincerely grateful. We as seniors may not seem to appreciate the time and patience spent on us by our teachers and the love and understanding of our parents, but tonightl know we all realize how great and fine these things have been. All that we are or shall ever hope to be we owe to our parents and the teachers of Glen Elder High School. Tonight we are meeting formally as a class for the last time, tomorrow each of us shall go his own way in the world. So on behalf of the Class of '45 I bid you all a fondest farewell.-Joan Beyer. rheqf und BIFICIS WE WERE WEE 1rarm5 '4um..m IBILHIIEEKI QQS f ,lib il x 1- x 5 x x ,r i , 41 gi I t if Mil' LL, 2 Wwn mx-QA , If ,-5, e - ie e - jf ga Mfgfwsixf f L' + -, f 1 l Z v f' E e A I , :Nina-, , xuwq- ,ve To the women of the WAC:S, the VVAVE'S, the SPAR'S, and the VVomen Marines go a tribute for all the aid they have giv- QQ X en iheir country in this present conHict. Madame Mexcroporotio gazes solemnly into her crystal ball, and this is what she tells us: We see two on a stage, and, as the audience breaks into aroar, whom do we see but Rose Mary Carl and Richard Cooper, as a second Fibber and Molly. Gazing over the audience, we see three nurses in navy blue, Margaret Ann Dickinson, Theresa LaRocque, and Evelyn More. 1 The crystal ball next reveals a farm scene. And there We see Myrth Shoemaker and her red-headed triplets feeding the chickens. Now we see Professor Harold Munsey lecturing a group of bored young men in the Yale University on the subject 'iBugoIogy. The crystal next clinks together, and what does it reveal? None other than Max Eberle astride a llama, inspecting oil wells in Venezuela. Twinkle, twinkle, little star. How I wonder who you are. None other than Bernadette Remus, as a ballet dancer in New York. Now as our gaze once again falls upon the crystal ball, we see Colonel Robert Glauser, lecturing to a bunch of new recruits upon The Do's and Don't's of the Army. 'l'sk, Tsk. Would you believe it? Elwyn Kresin and Bobby Boller as hobos catching the freight to Chicago. 1. We now focus our gaze upon June Morris who is a secretary to the Chief Executive of the Krisp Kracker Company in Chicago. The crystal ball glows with a soft, luminious light, and little black and white furry objects come into view. But no, it can't be! Can it??? It is!!! Hundreds and hundreds of baby skunks. A thriving business, owned by the Winkle cousins, Lawrence and Dale. Happily married as farmers'wives, we see Kay Kohler and Phyllis Taylor, still living close to Glen Elder, and still the best of friends. Upon the crystal ball flashes the view of a restaurant in Kansas City, with none other than Norma Jean Fritchen and Marie Finley as waitress- es. Look at this! Norma Jean hands the Kansas City Star to Marie, and we gaze upon the headlines, Brilliant Young Scientist, Robert Terry, Makes Startling Discovery! Looking over the rest of the paper we see that Virginia Vint, returned missionary from Africa, is lecturing at the Kansas City NVomen's Club tonight at 8:00, also, that Joan Beyer is giving flying lessons at the Kansas City Air Port every Thursday and Saturday afternoons. We now see Robert White and Darrell Remus as Tillers ofthe Soil. Across the crystal ball there now fiashes a streamlined train bound for California, with Don Margreiter as the engineer. Keith Kohler, still in the navy, is returning to his station after a visit to the Kansas City Air Port. . Among other passengers are Dorothy McCune and Mary Fenner, taking a vacation from the strenuous pastime of teaching school. Rosemary Cooper is also bound for California, after visiting her friends and family in Kansas. She is returning to her branch of Curly Cue beauty shops, known all over the country. rhe mm IBILHIIEIG o The crystal ball now reveals to us a large room full of primary children, all grouped around their teacher. It is Opal Shoemaker, teaching kindergarten at Topeka. We now catch a glimpse of nature in all the fullness of its beauty. Huge forests, with its many hues of green, and high upon the mountain in a ranger's cabin is Bob Lee. Another deep look into the crystal ball! And yet another! But all that is revealed to us is a haze of green along a cliff in Oregon. A close look-- and there he is!!! Robert Wiss! And living as a hermit. Disappointed in love, Bob retired to the hills, where he spends his days in solitary confinement with Old Mother Nature. The ball grows dim, but brightens again long enough for us to see a winding path, leading further and further toward the top. No! Yes, there is someone on this path! Who? Who else other than Marjorie Forster, now a star of the great Metropolitan Opera, singing her way through life. Now, all is dark and the crystal ball tells no more. CLASS H ISTDRY In 1933, seven bright-eyed seaman, second class, of the Navy entered junior port, Glen Elder. Six of these were still together when they grad- uated from the junior port. In 1941 these six were given a promotion to seamen, first class. They were Donald Margreiter, Robert Glauser, Robert Wiss, and the Navy Nurses were Phyllis Taylor, Margaret Dickinson, and Joan Beyer. They were all assigned to the U. S. S. G.E.H.S. , and here they met their new shipmates, Robert Terry, Kathleen and Keith Kohler, Max Eberle, June Morris, Wayne Winkel, Rose Mary Carl, Marjorie Forster, Norma Jean Fritchen, Aileen Moores, Bernadette Remus, Opal Shoemaker, Robert White, Lawrence Winkel, Elwyn Kresin, Bill Weidenhaft, Robert Boller, Harold Munsey, Darrell Remus, Dorothy McCune, and Virginia Vint. During the first difficult trip ahead we chose as our admiral Don Margreiter. We lost seaman, first class, Robert Lee on the second half of our voyage. During the second year aboard, the crew was given a promotion to Ensigns. It was during this trip in which Harold Munsey became admiral. Seaman Wayne Winkel did not sign up for this voyage. The third year aboard we chose Jo Beyer for admiral. She is the first woman in history to ever become an admiral. During this trip we were promoted to Lieutenants, junior grade. Five new Navy Nurses joined the ship, G. E. H. S.-Vera Slate, Doris Marie Finley, Myrth Shoemaker, Theresa LaRocque, and Evelyn More. We lost one nurse, Aileen Moores, during the second half of the voyage, and Lieutenant Cj.g.JBill Weidenhaft. We entertained our superior officers at a banquet on the evening of May 5, 1944. The title theme was In Fair Hawaii? We docked long enough to give the annual Junior play, which was entitled Red Headed Royalty from Arkansas. 1rln.e7 .mm..a IBILHMEIIG The last year for the crew was filled with much joy. For admiral we chose Robert Terry. After being given another promotion to Lieutenant at the beginning of the voyage, we lost Navy Nurse Vera Slate to the U. S. S. Jewell City, and gained Nurse Mary Jean Fenner. Two members joined the G. E. H. S. crew the second half of our voyage. They were Navy Nurse Rosemary Cooper and Radioman Bob Lee. We docked at senior port to give a hilarious play entitled 'Eeacon Hill Billy . Because of rough weather and popular demand for repetition we presented it for a second time, May 9. We also had our annual Senior sneak away from port, when we went to spend Friday and Saturday in Kansas City, Missouri. The Junior crew gave us a charming banquet on May 2, 1945. Finally the evening of May 22 arrived. On that evening the crew re- ceived their diplomas and promotions to Captains, and even though they will drift far and wide, they will always look back on the journeys of the G. E. H. S. and will be reminded of four years well spent. SENIOR SNEAK 'J On Thursday evening, April 5, the Senior class, accompanied by Mrs. Morris and Mr. Sutcliff, boarded the local train for Kansas City, Missouri. After a sleepless night of fun we arrived at the Union Station at about 6:50 a. m. Soon afterwird we eriioyei a hearty breakfast at the Forum, followed by a shopping trip and an hour at the penny arcade. We met at the Union Station at 11:00 a. m. and visited the beautiful and impressive Liberty Memorial. In the afternoon we crowded into a street car and headed for Swope Park. We looked at the different animals and birds for some time, then hiked through some of the park. . In the evening we went to Bring on the Girls and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn before retiring. The first place of interest we visited on Saturday morning was the Kansas City Museum, and the second place was the William Rockhill Nelson Gallery of Art. Both places were very interesting and educational. After another afternoon of shopping and another movie on Saturday evening We left Kansas City, tired but feeling our time had been well spent. irunieff ailmd :miami JUNIUIPEENIUR BANCIUET The members of the Junior Cls ss were hosts to the Seniors, the fac- ulty, and the Board of Eduction at a beautiful and elaborate banquet in the grade school social room on Wednesday evening, May 2. The affair was semi-formal, and each guest was presented with ,a gay-colored hat by the reception committee when he arrived. The theme of the banquet was centered around the Armed Forces. Clever streamers hung from the ceiling and red, white, and blue bells dec- ora ted the lights. The tables were arranged to form an airplane. Centir g each table was a miniature landing strip with tiny airplanes. The combin- ation nut cups and place cards were also red, white, and blue. Patriotic and comic posters were fastened on the walls. Marjorie Anderson, Junior Class president and toastmistress, wel- comed the Seniors to the Banquet. Bob Terry, Senior Class president, gave the response. The delicious dinner consistirg offruitjuice, meat loaf, mashed potatoes, gravy, buttered beets, hot rolls, celery, radishes, carrot strips, ice cream, angel food cake, and coffee, was prepared by the mothers of the Juniors, the girls of the foods class served. The invited guests included the members of the Senior and Junior Classes, Supt. H. O. Sutcliff, Coach H. D.
