He has been a very special part of our four years at GCHS. Mr. Constantinou joined the high school faculty six years ago and has devoted his time here to enhancing student interests in the fields of marketing and accounting. At that time, he also took charge of the GCHS chapter of the Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA), which runs our school store. Through his leadership and guidance, DECA has matured from a small club into a popular, highly-respected, and awardwinning organization. In addition, PROFILE is especially proud to claim Mr. Constantinou as our trusted financial advisor. Thank you Mr. C. for making our four years here enjoyable and for your guidance, support, and friendship. We will truly miss you!! Dear Readers: You are an important part of this yearbook. Yes, that's right; Y-O-U!!! So, maybe you never won any award or did anything overly spectacular. Maybe the most you ever did was hand your homework in on time. But, still, somewhere within this book of memories you are included. Solemn, smiling, with your tongue sticking out, and your eyes bulging out of your head- you ARE in here. On what page, we're not certain, but you, your teachers, your friends, your enemies, and your classmates are contained within. Flipping through the pages of this book will be like scanning over the past four years of your life. The book's intent is to bring back memories for all: attending a football game, dancing the night away at the Summer-Winter Dance.. . What? You can't possibly believe that you took part in any of this? Well, here's proof! And just remember, any time you want- right now, tomorrow, or in the year 2010, you can always open up your yearbook, turn the page, and relive the endless memories. It is over one quarter of a century old. The amount of time, organization, and work poured into this book is limitless. (Not to mention endless!) This year, the staff was fortunate enough to be able to celebrate National Yearbook Week. The editors and staff of Profile 1988 wish to congratulate the graduating class of 1988: Happiness and success in all of your future endeavors! In addition, Profile wishes to thank Ms. Anne Valentino, our faculty advisor. Without Ms. Val's assistance, this book would not be a reality. 146 II 4 M til L-R: Top Row- A. Condello, N. Allen, H. Glen Cove High School will celebrate National Yearbook Week, October 18-25, and activities and events are planned to highlight the celebration. GLEN COVE HIGH SCHOOL The Glen Cove yearbook staff produces PROFILE and is directed by Ms. Anne Valentino and Senior Editor, Denise Troffa. President Reagan has signed a proclamation that cites the educational and career value of the yearbook and the historical and social significance of this school publication. Glen Cove has a long yearbook tradition, having produced PROFILE for more than a quarter of a century. Each year a student staff plans, designs, and produces the publication. It's a complete experience, said Ms. Valentino. Staffers learn and practice skills in writing, editing, marketing, advertising, budgeting, photography, art and design, and people management. Some go on to further journalism study, but all benefit in some way from the demanding and educational work of producing the yearbook. 147 1411111 Editors: Top Row (L-R): S. Beagelman, E. Krisch, P. In the music industry, we saw the return of many great artists such as Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead, George Harrison, Def Leppard, and Fleetwood Mac. U2 stormed America with their Joshua Tree album and tour. Other artists like INXS, George Michael, Sting, Whitney Houston, Prince, Madonna, and Bon Jovi continued their success. Jody Watley, Suzanne Vega, Richard Marx, and Crowded House were a few of the new artists who rose to stardom. Teen artists like Tiffany and Debbie Gibson hit both the charts and the malls, while Heavy Metal became more popular with groups such as Whitesnake, Motley Crue, Poison, and Metallica. Compact Discs became more popular, outselling records. Classic albums were re-released on CD's, including the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper celebrating its 20th anniversary. Television and movies also played an important role this year. With the Yuppie craze emerging, shows such as L. A. Law and thirtysomething and movies like Broadcast News and Wall Street became hits. T.V. sitcoms continued to be strong with shows like The Cosby Show , Family Ties , and Growing Pains getting high ratings. Movies such as Fatal Attraction , Good Morning Vietnam , Dirty Dancing , box office hits of the year. The New York area did not enjoy a great year in sports. Both the Mets and the Giants were unable to repeat as World Champions. The U.S. Winter Olympics Team was also unsuccessful in Calgary, winning only a few medals. 1987-1988 was also a year of great worldwide importance. U.S.-Soviet relations improved with the signing of the INF Treaty which called for the elimination of all Soviet and U.S. intermediate range missiles. October 19 became known as Black Monday -the day the Stock Market plunged into an all-time low. Conflicts in the Persian Gulf continued as Iran antagonized oil tankers and U.S. vessels there. AIDS continued to spread in the U.S. and around the world. A serious campaign for AIDS education and abstinence was established. The nation mourned over the deaths of many legends. Fred Astaire, Jackie Gleason, Rita Hayworth, John Huston, Danny Kaye, Lee Marvin, and Andy Warhohl are but a few of our great losses. Pope John Paul II made his much publicized visit to the U.S. The nation prayed for Baby Jessica who was safely taken out from the which she was trapped in. Secret lives of public figures were exposed. Gary Hart, Jim Bakker, and Jimmy Swaggart all had their share of sins. Donna Rice and Jessica Hahn gained great media attention from this. Both Judge Bork and Judge Ginsburg were rejected from being a Supreme Court Justice when their personal opinions and their past actions respectively prevented them from entering the nation's highest court. 1987-1988 was also an important year in our nation's history. We celebrated the 200th year of our Constitution. 1987-1988 will truly be a year to be remembered.
