Ain’t it funny how time flies When the best was yet to come..... 3 I only know it’s a matter of time. 5 6 Don’t try to live your life in one day; 7 But for all time. V And you pocket your dreams, 11 Many dreams come true 12 13 When the music dies . . 14 We’ll take the best, forget the rest 15 16 17 I II II 1IK S . . . Vtll Mill HI The 1986-87 PROFILE wishes to dedicated this yearbook to Mrs. Sally Zwiebach. She has been a special part of our four years at GCHS and she will remain in our hearts as our “Favorite Teacher” for many years thereafter. Mrs. Zwiebach enlightens her students through her exciting, exuberant and enticing way of teaching (assonance)! However, teaching at GCHS for thirteen years is not the only thing that takes up her time. She has also been the director of GCH’s Masquers’ Society and was the director of many plays performed by Theatre II of Glen Cove. Because of her versatility and great teaching, she won an Excellence in Teaching Award this year, which gave both the school and the students a sense of pride. Mrs. Zwiebach’s caring and concern allow us to regard her not only as a teacher, but as a peer. We would like to thank you Mrs. Zwiebach for being there: from helping us in English, to writing our college recommendations. We will truly miss you!!! V 19 fatuity s MM MM 41 MINIMI 411CN Mr. L. Finley, former Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Finley was not only noted for being a great Superintendent and good friend to many but also for his devotion to the education of children. Anyone who had the priviledge of working with him was delighted with his new educational philosophies and humanitarian attitude. Being a man with great foresight in education. Dr. Finley was responsible for keeping the Glen Cove School System up-to-date with the latest educational developments. He perceived that sixth, seventh, and eighth grade was a time for personal development, discovery, and exploration. Through his keen perception he founded the first middle school in the country in Illinois and later brought his idea to Glen Cove whereas he founded the Glen Cove Middle School which was later renamed in his honor. Besides being responsible for bringing to Glen Cove the idea of the middle school. Dr. Finley also established the new gymnasium and fine arts building in the Middle School. His use of removeable walls and computer systems was amongst the first in the country and a great benefit to Glen Cove. Dr. Finley was a great man whom we always respected and will always remember and love for the kindness and devotion he showed us one and all. The girls faired well considering they were placed in a higher division this year and played tougher opponents. The team’s leading players were Karen Gallego, Tarsjma Fauntelroy, Sue Dunlop, Valerie Rummo, and Stacy Sullivan. They played 1st, 2nd, 3rd singles and 1st doubles, respectively. Karen and Tarsjma, an eighth grader, played in the countries. Karen won the County Championship and Tarsjma placed third. These two then moved on to play in the states. Karen played exceedingly well in the final match. She lost the first set, won the second, and came from behind in the third to clinch the State Championship title. Unfortunately, Tarsjma did not fare as well, losing in the second round. Coach Crouzet-Pascal feels it was a successful season in terms of “comradeship, cooperation, and a sense of togetherness”. These factors made the season a fun-filled one for all of the girls. Next year’s outlook is not too promising, since the team will be losing eight players. This leaves many spots open, which Coach Crouzet-Pascal hopes to fill with many recruitments next year. 223 VUMI X III ■ ill This year, the Varsity Volleyball team finished its season with a league record of 5-7. Also, Karen Napoli, Marci Rappaport, Maureen Scanlon, and Tracy Yuen were coached by Mr. Johnson for four years. Mr. Johanson and these four began on the J.V. team and moved up together to the Varsity level. Coach Johanson said, “It was a pleasant experience having them on the team.” Next year, Coach Johnason feels the team should do at least as well as this year, hopefully better. There is a good nucleus of Patricia Raso, Lorie Gregorio, and Debbie Johnson returning, all who were starters. Plus, there are promising players coming up from the J.V. team next year. The team then advanced to the State playoffs held in Little Falls, New York. Glen Cove reached the semi-finals, where they defeated Niagara High School, 2-1. In the finals, Glen Cove defeated Warwick High School 5-4 to become the New York State Baseball Champions. Desi Wilson hit the winning home run in the ninth inning and became the M.V.P. of the State Championship Game. Other key players were Joe lannello, Joe Floccari, Rich Lobo, Jimmy Marzulli, John Volpe, Brett Moore, Darel Haynes, and Andy Benzinger. The returning key players are Desi Wilson, Cruz Rosario, Edwin Rivera, and Tommy Capobianco. Desi and Joe lannello made All-County and Joe was also M.V.P. of the Division. Darel Haynes made All-Conference and Brett Moore made all-Division. Also, Joe Floccari received the Booster Award and Joe lannello received our High School’s M.V.P. Award. Coach Dolecki said the success of the team was due to “never quitting and having the desire to win”. Coach Dolecki also never dreamed of going to the states during the season which made the victory even more rewarding! 244 i. . I 1 11 til Top Row (L to R): Coach J. Polizzi, R. Retoske, P. Neumann, R. Cook, S. Applewaite, M. Battle, C. Giansante, and C. Burfeindt; Middle Row (L to R): S. Zolek, S. Beagelman, D, Matos, R. Zekraus, and K. Arnold; Bottom Row (L to R): M. Curley, A. Calderon, B. Miller, E. Perez, and J. Goodine. The J.V. Baseball team finished its season with a fine record of 12-8. They performed exceptionally well, considering there was a predominance of freshmen on the team. Seven of the sixteen players were freshmen, many of whom were starters. The team’s success was attributed to its good skills and talent. The leading pitchers were Christian Giansante and Paul Neumann. Christian Giansante had a record of 5-0 while Paul Neumann led the team with 40 strikeouts. Brian Miller led in stolen bases, doubles, and runs scored. Danny Matos had the most homeruns (2), while Paul Neumann held the highest batting average of .439. This team was the last to be coached by Mr. Polizzi. Coach Polizzi, who left to become the Science District Coordinator, was awarded the Nassau County J.V. Coach of the Year. He feels that with more experience, the team will live up to its expectations and be future contenders on the Varsity level. 246 a PALL FILTERS HELP IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE Pall is dedicated to improving the quality of life with filtration products for science and industry.
