A time to weep, And a time to laugh; 160 A time to mourn, And a time to dance. 161 IN MEMORIAM JIM CLANCY The death of Jim Clancy in December of this school year made everyone who knew him in Glen Cove High School pause, consider, and then begin to fully appreciate what he exemplified — a talent for friendship, a spontaneous humor, an inherent kindness, and a dedication to teaching. Mr Clancy had been in the U S. infantry in Europe during World War II and after the w ar and St. John’s University had worked as an accountant for General Motors, and he liked to tell about the three years that he and his w ife, Mary, spent w ith GM in Sw eden. After joining the Social Studies department here in 1961, he was repeatedly chosen as the seniors' favorite teacher His teaching style, which mixed humor, patience, and an easy familiarity with the subject, caused students to seek his classes. When class was out, he loved to be at home with Mary in Huntington, to visit with friends, or to lx- on the golf course. There were always students and teachers eager to talk to him. Though he had an Irish way with words, he listened too. He heard people. He w as a sensitive and thoughtful man, and a marvelously-amusing person to be with. 163 IN MEMORIAM JOHN C. LAMBERSON J John C. Lamberson was better known to his colleagues as “Jack” and as “Boss” to the hundreds of students who loved him and loved working in the plays which made him famous in Glen Cove. Before l eginning his twenty five year association with Glen Cove High School, he served as a Marine in the Pacific during World War II. He appeared in a Broadway production of On Borrowed Time” and had many TV appearances to his credit, including “Martin Kane, Private Eye . At GCHS he is remembered for such productions as Oklahoma! , Brigadoon”, The Sound of Music”, and The Diary of Anne Frank His death in September of this school year led people to recall an Irish blessing which he admired and often quoted: May the Road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, The rain fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, may God Hold you in the palm of His hand. 165 John Winston Lennon 1940-1980 166 The sixties was a time of turbulence, flower power, rebellion and peace. It gave us leaders such as John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King It gave us tragedies such as the Vietnam War and racial conflicts Through the commotion there were heard four voices, those of Paul, George, Ringo. and their founder and leader, John Lennon He had taken his group from dingy dance halls in Liverpool and Hamburg to world fame. The Beatles created a four-man cultural revolution. Their long hair and Edwardian clothes brough them considerable notice but it was their music that captured the ears of all nations. They brought us from yeah, yeah, yeah (meaning, she loved you) to looking through cellophane flowers at a world that turned us on. The over-riding theme in their later songs was peace. The late sixties saw bed peace and hair peace led by John. His song “Give Peace A Chance” rang out as an anthem for the flower children As the world entered the seventies, the Beatles did not. Each of the four continued to grow individually. John kept up with music, but soon found he was missing something He yearned for the home life and so took five years off to care for his son and become a househusband. 1979 saw him in the studio again, recording a long awaited album. Double Fantasy. His life touched all of us as did his music and ideals. Our only hope is that they will be remembered long after his death is forgotten. They were also selected by the World Trade Center to perform during the lighting of the Christmas tree. The Band, as usual, has enjoyed huge successes at both their Winter and Spring concerts. 222 r m 223 MAJORETTES As in the past, the Majorettes, under the leadership of Captain Karen Marrone and Co-Captains; Christine Fruth and Wendy Carrano, have provided us with lively routines at home football and basketball games. Since joining the Long Island Kickline Assoc., they have focused much of their time on preparing for competition against other Long Island squads. The Majorettes’ routines to “Fame” and Coming Up have earned them trophies and an invitation to this year’s finals. 224 FLAG CORF The Flag Corp, under the direction of Mr. Bruce Houston, has added a dash of color to the half-time performances at our home football games. While the girls are learning their routines, they are also in training to become Majorettes. SECTION 33 There is never a lack of school spirit when Section 33 shows up to cheer at a game. They always spark enthusiasm whether GCHS is winning or losing. 225 FRENCH CLUB The French Club offers its members many opportunities to utilize their knowledge of the French language through trips to French movies, restur-ants, and Quebec City, Canada. The Faculty Advisor is Mr. Joseph Bartolomeo. President is Steve Lilie, vice president is Julie Kaufman, secretary is Alyssa Goldberg, and treasurer is Frank Kvie-tok. SPANISH CLUB The Spanish Club is for those students who wish to increase their knowledge and understanding of Spanish culture. The president is Roseanne Tedesco, vice president Eva Cappel, and secretary-treasurer Karen Burch. 226 HONOR SOCIETY The GCHS chapter of the National Honor Society is open to those students who maintain an outstanding scholastic record. The President is Steven Lilie, vice president is Joanne Mahares, secretary is Carmine DiSibio, treasurer is John Miechkowski, and the Faculty Advisor is Mrs. Judy Steigerwald. FILM 6 THEATER CLUR The Film Theater Club gives students a chance to see popular Broadway shows at a reduced cost. These may include a comedy, musical, or contemporary drama. The Faculty Advisor is Ms. Barbara Salant, President Julie Drucker, Vice President Holly Hepp, and Treasurer Susan Hochberg. 227 IMAGES Images is the school’s literary magazine. Drawings, short stories, poems, and photographs submitted by students are analyzed by the staff and the best are published annually. Images is expressive; it’s a way for students to get their ideas and thoughts across to other students. Holly Hepp is Editor-in-Chief, Claire Drucker is Assistant Editor, and Mr. Lee Smith is Faculty Advisor. 228 DEBATING CLUB The Debating Club is new this year. Its goal is to instruct its members in the rules of Congressional Debate and to prepare them for various Model Congresses. The officers are President Susan Betkowski, Vice President Judy Weiner, Secretary-Treasurer Susan Ka-sindorf, Chairman Robert Krisch, and Faculty Advisor Mr. Richard Welch. F.B.L.A. The Future Business Leaders of America is an organization composed of students dedicated to fund raising activities. Ms. Irene Logan is Faculty Advisor and Robert Lud-lum is President. 229 STAGE BAND and WIND ENSEMBLE The Stage Band and Wind Ensemble, both under the direction of Mr. Bruce Houston, have provided a new outlet for band members who wish to develope their talents. While the Stage Band plays a light jazz style and introduces electronic instruments, the Wind Ensemble offers the high pitches of the woodwind instruments. 230 CHORUS FRESHMAN ORIENTATION The Freshman Orientation Program is an attempt to ease the anxiety of all incoming freshmen, to facillitate their adjustment, and to encourage their participation in high school. The sixty-five members work under the direction of Dr. Ruth Shaffer. THE TATTLER The Tattler is the GCHS news publication. It is an entirely student run organization. The students write, edit, draw, create the layout design, and work closely with the printer. The Tattler has a staff of forty reporters whose goal it is to serve the student body of GCHS by providing a public forum which informs and entertains.” Editor-in-Chief is Gayle Greenhut, Assistant Editor is Lyn Layton, Managing Editor is Christine Fruth, and Faculty Advisor is Mr. Lee Smith. 233 COMPUTER CLUB The Computer Club, led by Faculty Advisor, Mr. Robert Desiano, and officers David Cohen and Andrew Shooman, has been very successful this year due to its increased membership (over thirty members) and the new PDP-11 computer system. The object of the club is to introduce its members to the many aspects of the computer field today. 234 KEY CLUB The GCHS chapter of the Key Club is geared towards school and community service. This international club, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Glen Cove, is advised by Ms. Kathy McNamee. 235 MEDIA SQUAD The Media Squad is responsible for getting movies, slides, film strips, and audio tapes to the right place at the right time and making sure they work. Some members help in making of slides, tapes, and other A-V items. They work under the direction of Mrs. Jean Hemp-ton. Mrs. Bertha Adamcewicz is another advisor to the squad. Nick Paluso has been an invaluable student member of the squad. 236 ART CLUB The encouragement of artistic students is fostered by Mr. Albert Johnson. He offers these students time and guidance to enable them to pursue their creativity beyond the classroom. 237 The job of the Senior Elections Committee is to oversee and supervise at school primaries, campaigns, and voting. 238 VARSITY CLUB The Varsity Club is very exclusive since all of its members must have received a Varsity Letter to join. The club has attended many sports-oriented functions. This year the club is run by an executive committee and Advisor, Mr. Thomas Ruckert. Among other plans, the Varsity Club is having a one day ski trip. Future plans include having a basketball shoot-out to help raise money for attending up coming baseball games. 239 R.O.T.C. GCHS’s R.O.T.C. Program gives students insight into the Aerospace Industry. Its goals are to improve leadership ability, develop a sense of responsibility, build character and promote academic excellence. Field trips and classroom instruction are under the direction of Col. Rex Davis and Sgt. Oddie Brown. 241 STUDENT COUNCIL The GCHS Student Council is a reflective voice of the entire student body. Their responsibilities include the Homecoming Bonfire and Ceremonies and the revival of spirit in the school. The Student Council is made up of two representatives from each homeroom. They, along with the council, are the governing body at Glen Cove High School. Ms. Barbara Salant is the Faculty Advisor. Once again under the direction of Mrs. Sally Zwiebach, they have presented us with a light fall comedy, The Skin Of Our Teeth and a spring musical, How To Succeed In Business. DECA CLUB The Distributive Education Club of America is a nationwide organization Its goal is to teach students fundamentals in business distribution and administration. The Deca Club is in its first year of operation in the GCHS. On the clothing front, the “preppy” look was the chief craze. Topsiders, argyle socks, blazers and La-Coste shirts graced our halls. The Western look also had its appeal — boots of all materials and designs warmed dozens of feet. Fringed sweatshirts further transformed us into ranch hands. Baggie pants also made an impact. In the area of accessories, space sacs were popular, along with barrettes, novelty pins, and lace collars. Computer games made it big at GCHS with barely a classroom free of a “BEEP BEEP” emitted from the rear. New Wave music came of age and found many fans among us. “B” movies sprouted up frequently. The only peces-sary characteristics were low budgets, blood, and lots of gore. “Blood Beach”, “Halloween “Prom Night”, “Maniac”, Bloody Valentine”, acquired a following at Glen Cove High. Soap operas, whose audience used to be considered as composed of middle-age housewives, soared in teenage popularity during the year. Guys as well as girls daily observed the trials and tribulations of Luke, Laura, Rick, and Leslie. Although seemingly trivial, these details will take on more significance for us in the years to come.
