Dedication In our years at Glen Cove High School, one man has given us his time, leadership and friendship. His name is Bob LaRocco, and it is to him that we, the class of 1977, dedicate this yearbook. Through car washes, cake sales, candy drives, prom decorations and basketball practices, Mr. LaRocco has stood by us offering a guiding light. As our class advisor, he has been through good and bad times with us. During the good times, Mr. LaRocco refused to accept credit. But during our bad times, he was the first to take the blame. (SEATED) VIRGINIA FERGUSON, JOHN 41 In Memoriam This past summer saw the passing of Mr. Bernard Blaney, a Glen Cove High School Spanish teacher for eleven years. Mr. Blaney devoted twenty-four years of his life to teaching Spanish and those who knew him considered him to be an authority in his field. Fellow teachers deemed him kind and sensitive towards his pupils. Others called him a fine and unassuming teacher . Another remembered how he was always in a hurry to do things for his students. Those who knew him at home considered him an excellent husband and a fine father. There are many things we should remember about Mr. Blaney. One that stood out was his desire to treat everyone in a kind, sensitive manner regardless of the person's age. When we look back at the years we spent in Glen Cove High School we will always remember the really big events occurred. When Pe°P1«.taU‘ about Rl.chard Nixon and Watergate we will recall that Nixon's historic resignation , . , August tn ediately following our freshman year. However, many other smaller events marked our high school careers, and these are the things that will have significant mea ling to us in the coming years. Sport 224 Abe to earth, Abe to earth. Come in earth. Over! successes, clothing fads, and the initiation of many new programs and activities have made our high school days something to remember with smiles. There are three such events that made our freshman year special. In midwinter, with streaking moving across the nation, Clen Cove High School had its own streak with about ten of that year's seniors dashing across the back parking lot unclothed. In warmer weather everyone was warmed a little more 225 by the theft of the Regents exams. The 1 'Exorcist'' then opened across the country and became a smash hit. Sophomore year saw the formation of the Student Council's Substitute Enrichment Pilot Program (SEPP). This allowed students to listen to guest speakers. Girls tennis made its debut here in the spring of our sophomore year. In the August after our sophomore year, McDonalds opened and engulfed seemingly half of Glen Cove High School through 226 either jobs or eating. Today, when one enters McDonalds, it seems as if there is a revolving door between the classroom and the takeout line. Our Junior year was marred by the destruction of the gym, through fire, in April. The movie Jaws opened and became the biggest box office hit in history. Posters, pennants, necklaces, T-shirts, and children1 s toys were created showing the mouth of the great white shark. During our Junior year we were 227 also provided with a completely revamped library, which included a computer terminal. Our first student blood dnve was established for seventeen year old students to contribute to if they so desired. A complete video studio was set up which allowed Glen Cove students to produce television programs. A Winter Track team was also established. Under the direction of Dr. Shaffer, the Action Learning Program was started, permitting students to work in 228 volunteer areas and receive up to one full credit for their work. The Olympic Games provided thrills in winter and summer as people like Franz Klammer, John Naber, and Glen Cove's own Howard Davis Jr. rose to fame. In our senior year we have seen an electronic music studio set up and the marching band travel to the University of New Hampshire to perform. The first part of this year was hampered by a teacher's job action. Due to the lack of space, 229 no fans were allowed to watch the varsity basketball team perform at Webb Institute. In sporting areas, we have seen four years of considerable success. Olympic Gold medalist Howard Davis Jr. put Glen Cove on the boxing map and was voted the best boxer in the 1976 summer Olympics. After many second place finishes, Mr. Travatello coached the varsity baseball team to the Nassau County championship in 1975. The varsity tennis team took divi- 230 sional crowns in 1973, 1975, and 1976, while the varsity track team topped its division in each of our first three years here. The soccer team swept to a divisional crown in 1975 and the varsity basketball team rebounded from many years of losing to capture its division crown in 1976 and 1977. The emergence of Dorothy Hamil as an Olympic champion skater brought out the wedge haircuts.
