It was developed through the efforts of the faculty and administration. 1 he Student Advisory Council is a modified student government. It does not have the authority of unlimited government, but it is actually more effective because it has the co-operation of the administration. Although it has only thirteen representatives, S.A.C. represents all functions of school life. The four classes are represented on the council by their respective president and secretary, and. in the case of the Senior class, the vice-preident as well. Extracurricular activities, sports. Tattler, and Alpha are among those groups which have representation. At their meetings, the S.A.C. presents to the administration those problems which arise during the school year and suggests possible solutions for them. If these are feasible, they are taken into consideration by the administration. The actual purpose of the Student Advisory Council is to advance co-operation and co-ordination between the student body and the administration and, thus, to provide a happy, pleasant, and constructive school year for the students of the high school. Its members consist of the Senior class officers: Robert Pincus. Edward Altieri, and Pat Stango. the adviser. Miss Richardson, and two elected representatives for each Senior homeroom. It is the duty of these representatives to attend meetings and to beep their respective homerooms in contact with the deliberations and decisions of the committee. If a major question arises it is discussed in the homeroom, voted upon, and the results brought bach to the committee. Some of the many problems and decisions with which the Senior Executive Committee was expected to deal were: the annual magazine drive, the organizing ol the Senior Ball, and the planning of the Senior trip. I he activities of this group plaved a major role in making our Senior year a success. Senior Executive Committee EDITORIAL STAFF Jg Front Row. left to right: E. Kaminski (Edilor-in-Chicf). M. It usually appears every three weeks and contains accounts of recent school news, sports events, and feature columns. Each January, two juniors are chosen by the senior editors and faculty adviser to edit attler for a training period which lasts until June. The following September these two students assume the responsibilities ol editors-in-chief. I i! •:.f I I V.- v i 14 Tattler is a self-supporting publication. 1 Iiis means that it does not receive funds from the Student Activity Fund, though at times, it does receive loans from the fund which must be repaid. Local businessmen and industries advertise in attler and thus help to meet the cost of printing, as do the students who are charged a nominal fee for subscription to the Tattler. I he rattler editorial staff and its reporters endeavor to maintain the high standards set by the Columbia Scholastic Press in their effort to beep the students of the high school up to date on the latest school news and to bring them enjoyment with feature columns. Lor the past six years Tattler has received prizes awarded by the C.S.P. I he students who devote their time to the Fattier are rewarded by gaining a knowledge of the functions, problems, and responsibilities of a modern newspaper. 15 ADVERTISING STAFF f ront Row. left to right. Profile For many seasons, activities have taken place in Glen Cove High School, all of which have been recorded in the Profile. 1 his yearbook is a composite picture from the time of our first entrance as freshmen to our final exit as graduates. The Editorial. Art. Business, and Literary Staffs, headed by Joan Sharpe and Frank Huff, have worked diligently after school since last May. Soccer I Iiis year the soccer team, although a little low on wins, was certainly high in spirit. Under the capable leadership of co-captains Eric Kelley and Bob Pincus, and the able coaching of Mr. Goldsworthy, the soccer team proved to be a team of which Glen Cove High could be proud. The boys fought hard and showed good sportsmanship. 1 hey have high hopes for next year. GLEN com; high school band MAJOREITES .e i to right: Mercedes Melendez. Ginny Guriere. Karen Kirby. Barbara Smith, Lena Galante. Natalie Groblcwski, Jean Zicr. Camille Martino. Millie Gallart. Pat Kletcher. Marion Arculeo. Under the able direction of Mr. George Scott, the Band is one of the most familiar organizations in Glen Cove High School. Dressed in colorful uniforms, the Band parades on the football field during hall time and helps boost team spirit by playing the school songs during the game. Also included in the Band s yearly program are special assembly programs, the Jones Beach Concert, and the Memorial Day Parade. An important feature of the Band is the majorette section. Each year the band members elect a head majorette and band leader. Fhese girls are given the distinctive privilege of wearing the decorative uniforms representative of their stations. They lead the Band and the other majorettes during parades, and they organize routines for the band shows. In addition to performing a service to the Band, they add color to its appearance. A Band member gets satisfaction from knowing that he is a service to his school and from the opportunity to develop his musical ability by his participation in the organization. 23 Gee. this math is hard! So it is with our years at high school. However, there is a difference; the time we have spent here can no longer be recaptured. but sure ly th e memories can. In the fall of 1953, another freshman class entered Glen Cove High School. Had this class a crystal ball into which it could gaze, it might have seen four full and wonderful years lying ahead—years ol work, years of pleasure, years of firm friendships, years of trying moments and problems to be surmounted, but withal, four years that were as rich and satisfying as we could make them. Our first two years were, in the main, spent in planning and in observation. How were the upper classmen doing things? What courses should we take? W ho will be our class leaders and officers? As underclassmen, we could only watch and wait hopefully for the time to come when we too would be in the enviable position ol upper classmen. We held our class elections at the beginning ol our Junior year. After a vigorous campaign, Vincent Madden was elected President, Henry Buchanan, Vice-President, and Patricia Stango, Secretary. Our Junior year was eventful. We saw the realization of a Student Advisory Council. We laid pi for special club trips and we talked of we would do when we put out our own ye; book. Of course, our Junior Prom climax of the year. It took the cooperation hard work of many members of the class to make this event the success it turned out to be. Fall 1956 —and in came a very different class from the one that had entered three years earlier. This class, now seniors, had learned how to cooperate and work together. It had learned that teachers, as well as students, were human beings. It had learned that in order to play, one must first work, and that to work, one cannot play. First on the agenda of senior activities were the class elections. Representatives from each homeroom nominated candidates. When the final returns were tabulated Robert Pincus had been elected President. Edward Altieri, Vice-President, and Patricia Stango, Secretary. These officers, along with the other seniors, were determined to make this year the most successful one in the history of the school. What were our achievements? We had a very successful magazine drive. We produced the first yearbook with color added as well as a fine senior play entitled “Suds In Your Eye. Io these achievements may be added our social successes in the form of football and basketball dances, and the crowning success of our Senior Ball. Summer 1957—and graduation. Many of us may never see each other again. But we will ave one common bond. Our yearbook us to look back and recall the four wonderlul years we spent together. In the beginning there was nothing except enthusiasm, ideas and many blank pages. Upon this meoger foundation you have built this beautiful memory book. Our work at Progress really is fun . . . because we enjoy, so much, getting to know such splendid faculty members ond students as you. PROGRESS PUBLISHERS INCORPORATED 11 COLVIN AVE. • PHONE 2-4401 • ALBANY, N.Y. 95 mm Nature gives to every time and season some beauties of its own; and from morning to night as from the cradle to the grave is hut a succession of changes so gentle and easy that we can scarcely mark their progress. (Dickens) Indeed, each year, from that of freshman to senior, and even each stage of our high school career, has been marked by some intrinsic beauty of its own. It may be that we, the Class of 1957, feel at this moment-on the threshold of commencement — that THIS season — the sunset of our High School years — is the most beautiful. Have the succession of changes really been so gentle, so easy, that we can scarcely mark their progress? Let us not be foolish enough to consider that, during this time, nature has capriciously scattered her gifts to the indolent and industrious alike. To those whom she presents opportunity, she first imposes tasks. I hose whom she would reward, she first puts to the test. I hose who overcome her have first to accept her challenge. Indeed, “the apple which she drops at the feet of a Newton is hut a coy invitation to follow her to the stars.’ Unless a tree has borne blossoms in Spring, you will vainly look for fruit on it in the autumn. (Hare) 96
