She is planning to leave at the end of this year--1946. In a recent interview this petite English teacher said: My problem had been whether 'to teach or not to teach' but since I at last know Macbeth and Ham- let by heart, having taught them both for about 12 years, I can truthfully say that my golal has been reached and I will gladly re- linquish my position. Her latest venture at the school was the directing of Rivals which she had directed once before back in 1935. This is a favorite of Miss Bachrach's and both times it was given, once by the Senior Class of 1936 and again by the Senior Class of 1946, it was quite a success. THE GLEN BURNIAN 3 NITE CLUB RAIDED New York City, Octem 10.-A score of G-men, assisted by the New York City police, early this morning made an invasion of the Cobalt Nite Club for the first time. This unexpected raid was caused by some ill rumors that had reached the expectant ears of the law. Many times before the Cobalt Nite Club has been unsuccessfully raided by the New York City po- lice. This raid was also unsuccess- ful even though the G-men had been called in to help. For the last three years the mayor of New York, the Hon. Harry Melvin, has been trying to pin something on Ellsworth Smoothie Nowell and his partner, Sly Nigro. Howev- er, when the G-men entered the Nite Club last night they found nothing even suspicious in the Nite Club nor in its great gaming room, which is only a little smaller than that of Monte Carlo. In spite of evil rumors it appears that the Cobalt Club is just a clean nite club which caters to the idle rich of society. ALALTEH LINUHELL UULUMN Hollywood, Calif., Octem 10.-A schoolday romance at Glen Bur- nie High School today terminated in marriage when Margaret Mor- gan and Ellsworth Cook eloped to Yuma. Miss Morgan, a star on the War- ner set, came to Hollywood in 1937 and six months after her arrival became the fifth wife of Ed Hardy the screen Romeo. As in his other marriages, Ed soon lost the af-, fection of his beautiful wife, and Margaret journeyed to Reno where she received a quick divorce. Several months went by after the decree was granted, and then yesterday, Hollywood received news of the elopement and second .narriage of Miss Morgan. For her second marriage, she has picked a rising actor in Mr. Cook, the vil- lain in many of the movie center's best gangster pictures. It is to be hoped that this early romance in the east will become one of Holly- wood's few successful and perma- nent marriages this year. The unusual decorations were executed by Roberta Kernen whose artistic ability has made a place for her in the world of art. Many of the members of the class of '36 are now prominent people in the fields of education, sports, business, and athletics, and quite a. few of these were present at the reunion. THE GLEN BURNIAN Compliments ofthe GLEN BURNIE IMPROVEMENT ASSGCIATION CINEMA REVUE - by .. SN OOP-ALL After attending the opening per- formance of We Women I can truthfully say this is the greatest production of the big three - Thelma Christy and Bertha Gold- smith, the stars, and Russell Clag- gett, the director and writer. It is the first picture of its kind. In fact, it's stupendous! It's collossall It's gigantic! There is not a male in it from start to finish. Annie, portrayed by Miss Chris- ty, is in love with a handsome young sailor whom we never see, and the story concerns the recital of her troubles to her girl friend, Lizzie, played by Miss Goldsmith. This team reminds you of the old team of Patsy Kelly and Thelma Todd which was popular about 12 years ago. I enthusiastically rec- ommend this picture to anyone in- terested in the adventures of young girls. It is interesting to note that the two stars, Miss Goldsmith and Miss Christy, and also the director, Mr. Claggett, graduated from the same high school and were in the dramatic society together. This school was the Glen Burnie High School of Maryland and any in- stitution that can turn out such products certainly deserves an or- chid. THE GLEN BURNIAN 7 ALUMNI NEWS FLASI-IES To our surprise, Jesse Medford has made a place for himself in the world. Who would have thought that this boy who had so much trouble in English would rise to the position of presidency in the Baltimore Trust Company. Mr. Medford has also secured a wife. When asked whether he would at- tend the Class of '36 reunion he replied that because his vacation came. at the same time, he would be unable to as he had promised to take his wife to Florida. Fate certainly did its part. if if Sk Margaret Alvater has become one of the foremost librarians, working now at Enoch Pratt. Car- roll Calvert has finally succeeded in his life's ambition to become a professional checker player. He really is a wizard at the game. It's about time. Imagine going into a high school which has a dancing studio. That's what has happened at Glen Burnie High School and' the instructors are Misses Mar- garet Vain, Doris Hammond, Dor- othy Hammer, and Lillian Fowler. How the times do change! Having been engaged for more than ten years, Miss Rose Haegerich and Mr. Franklin Ridgell ibetter known as Ducky J are just about ready to take the marriage vows. When Jeanne Porter graduated she boasted that she would probably marry Elmer. So far she has not succeeded. Rome, Italy, Octem 10.-After eight years of suppression, dicta- torship again arises in Italy. Yes- terday Generalissimo Antonio di Leonardi marched on Rome with an army of black shirts. Today he easily took over complete con- trol of this city due to his great popularity among the Fascists. As Premier Mussolini did before, di Leonardi did today by making himself dictator under the appel- lation of Premier. Premier di Leonardi now controls practically all powers in Italy, though he is smart enough not to reveal this to the populace. COMPLIMENTS OF MAYER'S 1105-1115 LIGHT ST. Since his trainer, Mr. Gordon Owens, has organized the 'paper weight' fight- ing class, in which every contest- ant must be of a certain height, Charley has held every title. This year, however, when he was meas- ured to tight it was found that Charley had grown another inch. This strange happening of fate will put Mr. Biemiller out of plenty of money. Glen Burnie. -- Miss Sylvia Thompson holds the record of be- ing the first woman in America to be a street cleaner. Miss Thomp- son, who is from Brooklyn, relates how she achieved her great suc- cess. During my school years I never had a special ambition. When I graduated from G. B. I-I. S. in 1936, I had the chance of being a stenographer. I knew there were many stenographers and much bet- ter ones than I, so I gave up that idea. I had never seen a wom- an street cleaner and as I have always tried to be original, I thought I might try my hand at this occupation. I did and here I am. I 1 10 THE GLEN BURNIAN INCGME TAX EVADER I-IELD Miss Dorothy Kelly, the owner of the largest beauty shoppe in Glen Burnie, The Beautifierj' was arrested yesterday for refusing to pay the annual hairdressers' tax. The suit was filed by the Bar- bers' Board of Anne Arundel Co. After graduating from barbers' college, in which she spent five years, she opened this beauty shop- pe in Glen Burnie and it was im- mediately a success because of the low prices. Miss Kelly stated that she could charge low prices be- cause of the fact that she was ex- empt from taxes. Her assistant, Miss Anne Mann, was arrested with her. This dangerous arrest was made by a dozen G-men who raided her shoppe last evening. Because of the frightening rumors that had centered around this hard-boiled hairdresser the county officers were afraid to take any decisive steps themselves and called upon the Government men for assist- ance. Today a petition has been cir- culating among the beauty-seekers of Glen Burnie, with Miss Boots Seebo as the originator and leader, to bail Miss Kelly out of jail for the Thursday Special in the beauty shoppe. As yet, no decision has been reached. Baltimore, Octem 10. - Miss Thelma Christy, the accomplished actress of the stage, is returning to Baltimore on May 17 to play the role of Juliet in that great work of William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet. The play will be presented at the Ford Theatre on Octem 39. Miss Christy is Maryland's greatest gift to the stage. She gained her first experience in dra- matic work as an actress in school plays at the Glen Burnie High School, after graduation she went to a school of drama in New York City. Six months after she finished her preparatory work, Thelma was a leading stage star, and since then she has been steadily increasing in popularity. There are no doubts that her present Work will be a success. N- . . ' Glen Burnie Optical Co. ocuusrs AND oPr1c1ANs ROLAND R. Mosi-, Optician Located at Glen Burnie EDI TORI A L- Since Hollister Storrs was elect- ed Mayor of Clarkville a. year ago, this city has been in a state of turmoil. He and Carlton Saffell, the president of the City Council, 'have been in cahoots since the l l l l w beginning of their terms and the city certainly seems to be the worse off for their partnership. But their relation could hardly be called a partnership as Sa.ffel1 seems to be the political boss with Storrs a mere flgurehead. Since November 1 the city debt has been raised from 31,415,000 to S3,763,000, and it would take a microscope to dis- cover any benefits' we might have received. Storrs, Saffell and the other of- ficials have spent practically all of this sum racing over the country trying to get some tips on other city goots. If instead of running around the country they would try staying home and running the city for awhile Clarksville might come out of the red. But even when we have our of- ficials in the state, Mayor Storrs spends the greater part of his time playing Monopoly and neglecting the affairs of our town, while Mar- ion Sanner claims most of Carlton Saffell's leisure hours and many aren't supposed to be spent in leis- ure. It is indeed sad to think what Phi-M'maFY Clarkville will be before their term M. D. in attendance is up.
