Richard Shell, head of the construction association that I worked for, okayed it with Dan Garrison, construction co-ordinator and Kent Smith, head en- gineer. Mary Simpson, Richard’s private secretary, suggested that I find out what had happened to the other members of the Class of ’71. I took the sug- gestion and headed for Glen Alpine. As I stepped to the ticket office at the airport terminal, I was met by Debra Fox, who filled out my baggage slip and flight ticket. Among others working in the building were Faye Rhodes, working for Hertz Rent-A-Car; Debbie Mull, Patt Barrier, and Therisa Crawley, working as waitresses in the terminal cafe- teria; and Mike Huffman, traffic director for the airport. Boarding the nuclear powered aircraft, I was met by Carolyn Bennett, head stewardess, who introduced me to three of the other stewardesses: Frances Epley, Becky Owens, and Susan Johnson. While in the air, I met Bud Lowdermilk, playboy extraordinaire, and his traveling companion, Doug LaFevers. Sitting in the seat directly in front of them was none other than the world famous juvenile de- linquent defendant, Lynn Curtis. 28 Class Prophecy Due to the work of David Melton and Paul Whis- nant, who had designed the nuclear aircraft, my flight was comfortable and short. I was beginning to ap- preciate those former classmates. On arriving at Glen Alpine, I was surprised by the size of the airport and the number of planes on the airfield. The beginning of this expansion came about when Jason Bridges, that multimillionaire realtor, and his partner, Eddie Rogers, decided to buy the Lake James property from David Farris and Dwight Fair- child, co-owners of the Duke Power Company, in order to make a national tourist attraction and variety vacationland in the area. The result w as the sudden growth of Glen Alpine into a city of wealth and entertainment. Strolling around the city, I found Michael Jarrett’s name on the door of the mayor’s office. Entering the office, I first met Dianne Burleson, head of the city _ treasury department. Sitting in the office were Jimmy Hallyburton and Gibbie Harbison, local night club operators; Larry Yount, representative for the county service station operators; and Bill Parks, com- missioner for Burke County Public School busing. It looked as if the mayor would be busy, so I moved on. Leaving the office, I noticed Libby Hollifield, (Prophecy Continued) famous literary humorist, entering the new beauty shop, owned by Barbara Isaacs and operated by Becky Scott. Hoping to meet other classmates, I followed, and found several familiar faces within: Jayne Morgan, a well-known fashion model; Barbara Wallace and Dorothy Lytle, popular dancing teachers at the Sunset Studios, owned and operated by Harvey Summers and Michael Ervin; and Jane Travis, local representative and saleslady for Avon. At the new concert hall, I found Tim Davidson rehearsing one of his newest concert compositions. On the forward stage, Doritha Rutherford was keep- ing her voice in shape for her weekly performances. Further down the street, I ran into Rick Franklin, president of Nonard Enterprises, and his public rela- tions man, Dennis Ross. Rick informed me that Steve Smith was work co-ordinator for the main plant and Gary Morrison was head technical advisor. Upon visiting the new consolidated school, I found Marie Miller, math teacher; Shirley Hipps, typing in- structor; Karen Poole, school librarian; and Kathryn Browning, geography-economics teacher; sitting in the air-conditioned, sky-lighted teachers lounge. I found that Wilson Sullivan now headed the Phys. Ed. department and Keith Wood was the school guidance counselor. On further inquiry, I was informed that Wayne Scott, Bobby Melton, and Randy Pritchard had 29 cashed in on the tourist trade by starting a dune- buggy and motorcycle club, renting to tourists who were free to tear around on land leased from Paul Klotzle, a wealthy banker. Leaving town, I passed the GLEN ALPINE DAILY NEWS building and happened to notice the words “Ruth Smith, Editor-in-chief,’ above the entrance. Stopping and going in, I found Nancy Hunt, head of advertising; Susan Orders, a local columnist; Sue Pat- ton, head photographer; and Kay Johnson, assistant editor, all hard at work. They told me that Margo Horton, foreign correspondent, was on assi gnment in South America. Back out on the street, I ran into David Beaver, chairman of the PTA board, and Gary Moore, judge of the Burke County district court. As they were headed for a cafe for something to eat, I decided to go along. The cafeteria, one of a chain owned jointly by Cathie Bailey, former Miss America, and Wanda McCurry, a star of a new T.V. series, was quite a swanky joint. Our meal was served by Carolyn Beaver, and as I looked around, I noticed Susan Smith, sales promotionist, checking with the manager on a matter of advertisement. I could now rest assured that the role was com- plete, and ours was the greatest of classes.
