As the sports editor for the Asheville Times, I was assigned to cover the event. I had not seen G. A. for some time; I decided therefore, to tour the city before going on to Pitts Memorial Stadi- um to see the game. Main Street Glen Alpine had surely changed! The first thing I noticed was a huge department store with a blazing neon sign: Mull’s Bargain Basement. “This,” I thought, “must be the property of millionaire financier John Mull.” Inside the store I talked to business manager Jim Fowler, who was busy settling some financial accounts. I also saw Mrs. Linda B. Earp, and Mrs. Brenda Simmons, two shopping housewives. There were other businesses on main street. I noticed a night club, the SAC A GO-GO, owned by singer Sarah Ann Clontz. SAC wasn’t in her office, though; she was visiting psychiatrist Pat Jackson. I also stopped by the Chev- rolet place, where I talked to salesman Jackie Brittain. Assisting Jackie were Tim Jarrett, Robert Denton, Charles Duffey, and Doug Brittain. Other main street businesses included Trula Lowdermilk’s Beauty Shop, Larry Parker’s Barber Shop, and Ronnie Cloer’s Volkswagen lot. Next I stopped by the University of North Carolina at G. A., where I congratulated head coach Gregg McGee and line coach Garry McCurry on their team’s recent Crocodile Bowl victory over Alabama. They told me to look up two other faculty members at UNC-GA if possible—English professor Sheila Pyatte and mathematics professor Wanda Waters. I didn’t have time to visit anyone else, however; I had to register at the hotel before the game. I was staying at the GA Hilton, managed by none other than Randolph Patton. The television in the lobby was advertising Walt’s Inde- pendent Service Stations, a chain of service stations owned by Gerald Head. Actress Kathie Mull played a housewife having her car filled at the station, while David Majors played the bit part of the service station attendant. Also in the lobby, I saw a press conference forming. Leslie Smith, the famous clairvoyant, was about to predict the outcome of the football game. At the conference, I had a chance to talk to some of my colleagues of the press, namely reporters Connie Anderson, Christine Brewer, Wanda Farris, and Jane Black. Doug Duckworth, who edits the local paper, the Glen Alpine Times, did not attend the conference; but I did talk with him before leaving town. 62 After that I had to leave for the game to catch the kickoff. Taxi driver Mike Caldwell took me to the stadium. On the way he told me about his job and his boss, Danny Cook, president of the taxi company. Other drivers include Wilburn Browning, Leroy Epley, Larry Beach, and Hubert Hardy. Mike also pointed out many interesting sights of the city, including Billy Farris’ Garage, Jo Ellen Mauney’s health clinic, Wanda Lytle’s gymnasium, where she teach- es Karate and judo, and Allene May’s restaurant. We passed, too, the Turkeytail Theatre, owned by Sandra Henry and Susie Hildebrand and currently featuring a double feature-Don Dixon, Linda Daniels, and D. C. Patton in Tom- foolery; and Mary Compton and Bruce Queen in Israli Attack. The latter is reported to be a very short movie. Finally we arrive at Pitts Memorial Stadium, which had been designed by architect Steve Johnson and built by the Chapman Construction Company—David Chapman, that is—with funds provided by millionaire heiress Ida Mae Pitts. Of course there were policemen at the game: Robert Epley, Otis Shade, Kenneth Patton, James Summers, and Ver- non Powell were several. All were headed by Chief of Police Tommy Staver and Police Commissioner Roger Duck- worth. Of course, many of my classmates were attending the game; I saw Glen Alpine Mayor Dennis Stillwell and North Carolina’s Governor Wayne Burnette with a host of secretaries and aides that included Mary Elizabeth Allen, Carol Sparks, Elsie Barrier, and Janice Dale. Senator Allen Reep—the big Al of Congress—could not attend due to his cur- rent fillabuster. His private secretary, Roberta Barrier, was there along with his chauffer, Carroll Green. There was great excitement in the press box as we watched the L. A. Rams kick off to the Kansas City Chiefs. I breathed a prayer for the Chiefs; for one of my classmates, Bobby “‘the Link” Sparks, was playing for L. A. This is Bobby’s second season as All-Pro. But Bobby is not the only sports hero our senior class has produced. The talk of the nation is presently the Bos- ton Celtics’ center, Torrell Bryant. Then, too, there are the St. Louis Cardinal’s Alvin Crawley of baseball and Odell Summers, the famous boxer. At half time I had a chance to talk to still more of my old classmates. Karen Ragan was home after several years in the Peace Corps. Patsy Grey and Marilyn Gwyn were there in their Navy uniforms. They’re registered nurses in the WAVES, of course. Generals Junior Epley of the Army and James Sisk of the Air Force were there for the game, as were enlisted men Dean Poteat and Alvin Carpenter. I saw airline pilots Chris McGalliard and Blan Benton on my way to the stadium hamburger stand, and while I was buying a burger, I talked to housewife Carolyn Denton, teach- er Linda Toney, and stenographer Sue Dellinger. Operating the stand were famous cooks, Nancy Freshour and Sylvia Garrison. Assisting them were their apprentices Carolyn Thomas and Pat Burleson. The girls asked me if I had read Ann Wintzer’s novel The Last Word, which received favorable reviews from critics Judy Yount and Rose Ann Smith of Slime magazine. Models Rama Orders, Gail Clontz, and Linda Lane, on vacation from New York, also attended the game. They were at the stand too. The Glen Alpine Woman’s Club also ran a concession stand, and the members were hard at work. Kay Partin and Pat Stillwell handled the candy and peanut concession. Constance McDowell, Linda Misenhelder, Susan Smith, and Barbara Crowder were selling drinks, while Nellie Rhinehart, Gloria Metcalf and Sarah Wallace were busy with the popcorn when I passed. Frances Smith, Janice Morrison, and Janice Jenkins were out for more supplies. I talked to club president Barbara Smith, and she was very pleased with their progress. Secretary-Treasurer, Pansy Evans said, too, that they were really making the money. I didn’t have time to find out about all of the girls’ occupations, but they all seemed to be socially prominent around G. A. Well, to make a long story short, the Rams won, 42-25; and I rushed back to Asheville with my story. I hated to leave the big city, but I could take with me the memory of seeing old friends again. 63 John Mull: Class Lawyer LAST WILL and TESTAMENT I, Elizabeth Allen, leave my love of the lake to Dudley Greene.
