I paused a moment on the runway, after leaving the plane. It had been a long time since I had been in my old home town and even longer since I had graduated with the class of 1966. I wondered what had happened to the other members of the class of '66. As I walked toward the terminal building, I passed Jimmy Farris, the pilot of the plane which I had flown in on; Gene Edwards, his co-pilot, and Junie Branch and Linda Epley, two attractive stewardesses, were onthe plane. A private plane was parked in a nearby hangar. I learned that it belonged to that Wall Street financier, David Powell. Outside the terminal I hailed a cab and found the driver to be Kenny Hildebrand. I checked in at the Hick Hotel, owned and operated by Donald Farris and Gilbert Norman. The next morning I strolled around Glen Alpine, gazingat the names of the numerous stores. I saw Williams' Department Store owned by none other than Harriett, Janet, and Sandra. I passed Richard Mode's ballet school. Next was Jean and Wilma Watson's Fashion Shop with Mildred Milligan, Sandra Carswell, and Jill Beardsley as three beautiful models. Across the street, I saw Libby Franklin leave her dental office with a pair of pliers and a hammer (She must have been going to make a house call.) The Professional Building was occupied by lawyers Wynn Justice and Elias Bryant, dentist Dewey Stillwell, draftsman Jim Beeler, and the well- known psychiatrist Wanda Jaynes. Next to the Professional Building was the establishment of the GLEN ALPINE WORLD, one of the largest newspapers in the United States. (It's printed on pieces of paper six feet wide and tenfeet long.) The editor is Wanda Brewer with Mitzy Leonard and Bobbie Jean O'Neil as social editors, and Revonda Lail as sports editor. In front of the WORLD building were several racks of newspapers. The headlines told of astronaut Steve Jenkins'trip to the moon. (People always saidthat Steve was out of this world.) There was also an article telling about the discovery of a more powerful rocket fuel by that intellectual scientist Garry Duckworth. As I passed Nancy Baker's Book Store, I saw a copy of the best-seller HOW TO GET A PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY SANDWICH THAT SWIMS BY CROSSING A PEANUT, A STICK OF BUTTER, AND A JELLY FISH written by Harriett Browning and Susan Crawley. Next to this book was the book HOW TO SLEEP IN CHEMISTRY WITHOUT REALLY TRYING written by Alan Bridges. Next to the Book Store was the White Theatre owned by Carolyn and Glenda. The theatre was presenting the movie TOO BAD ABOUT YOU based on the novel by Judy John- son. It was starring Lynn Justice, Barbra Abernathy, Patsy Clontz, and Elaine Cook. Across the Street was Dollie Shade's Beauty Salon. 56 I crossed the street and headed toward the recently built town hall. I went inside and found the mayor, Dwight Stillwell, reading the notorious paper-back book CANDY HILL. Standing nearby was the police chief Bill Royall gazing at a picture of that international beauty queen Shirley McCurry. I learnedfrom them about how some of the class of '66 were doing and where they were. It seems that Linda Brittain has made permanent residence in Oak Hill. Mike Smith is a salesman for the Space Ways of America. Carolyn Costner is doing very well as a secre- tary in New York. Rindy Proctor is preparing to become the world's first lady astronaut. Sam Wallace is vice-president of a trucking company in Chicago. I left the town hall and walked past the Glen Alpine Cultural Museum which exhibited works by such contemporary artists as Glenda Greene, Darlene Davis, and Phillip Patton. Next to the museum was the home of our ex-Governor Tom Heffner. Two blocks farther, I came to the night places of Glen Alpine. On my right I saw the Wave a Go-Go discotheque featuring the Knock-Kneed Four composed of Doug Patton, Dean Powell, Lee Denton, and Wesley Reeps, and those beautiful go-go dancers Laura Scott, Wanda Stamey, and Kay Norman. Next week the Wave a Go-Go is planning to feature Vera Lytle, Martha Lips- comb, Ruby Rutherford, and Angelia McElrath knownas the Silver Bells. Next to the discotheque was the Riviera Night Club owned by that international playboy Victor Scott and featuring that beautiful singer Betty Waller and comedian John McGalliard. Then I saw the big attraction of Glen Alpine. It was the GA Bunny Club operated by Phillip Vance and featuring Margaret Epley, better known as ' 'Flamin' Mamie''. Next was the television station WREC. I took a tour of the station and met Tony Wood, the manager, Diane Carroll, his secretary, and several television celebrities and movie stars. Among them were Everette Browning, star of the EVERETTE BROWNING SHOW, Libby Clontz, Linda Branton, and Irene Cowan. I finally made my way to the high school. I learned that Bill Scott is the new principal, Ronald Hipps is a favorite math teacher, and Eddie Simpson is the new band director. In the gym, I found Jean McGalliard coaching the girls' basketball team. I then walked over to the Glen Alpine Memorial Stadium where the Glen Alpine pro-football team was playing a rival foe. The team featured several home town stars. They were Paul Patton, Paul White, and Bo'' Taylor. To rival foes, they are known as the gruesome three- some.'' The team is managed by Larry Klotzle. Next to the stadium was the Slipin and Slidin Speedway which has featured such racing greats as Glenn McCurry and Johnny Burnette. The day was slowly coming to a close as I arrived back at the hotel. I thought about how much Glen Alpine had changed as the lights began to appear in many of the night places of Glen Alpine. 57 ie} —H Qa !
