For fifty years as a member of the Glen Alpine School Board, he rend- ered a service to the cause of public educational service, for his vision and understand- ing, and for his leadership over half a century, we, the students of Glen Alpine High School, express our eternal gratitude. 4 Dedicated In Deep Appreciation . . . Searching—for humility. Seeking—for character. We found a teacher who possesses a pleasing combination of all the fine qualities that make a person outstanding. We found her not only in academic life at G.A.H.S., but also in our extra-curricular ac- tivities. Besides instilling a knowledge of the fundamentals of English grammar and American literature into our minds, she helps to make our Junior-Senior a success each year. SECOND ROW: John Abernathy, Paul Noles, David Eggers, Ken Black, Wayne Costner, Randall Brackett. After a sluggish early season start, the Green Wave rebounded to win their last five games and become co-champions of the Skyline Con- ference with Drexel High School. Included in the Wave’s rough 9 game schedule were three AAA foes and one AA opponent. Under head coach Ralph Jug Wilson, and assistant coach Lane Arrington, the Green Wave won their 25th consecutive victory over a three year span by trouncing Oak Hill in the opener, 39-6. This win was followed by 3 straight losses to Swain, Brevard, and Drexel before G.A. could get back into the win column. The Wave then de- feated Old Fort, Holbrook, N.C.S.D., Salem, and Griffith. The homecoming game which the Wave won 41-12 was a milestone in the career of Wilson. The contest marked the 100th vic- tory for Ralph Wilson as head coach at Glen Alpine. Three more wins brought Wilson’s coaching record to an amazing 103-39-5, certainly one of the best records of any high school football coach in North Carolina. A. High, We Enter Into A World Of Uncertainty... CLASS PROPHECY The time is July, 1974, and the weather is unseasonably hot. Arriving at Glen Alpine Municipal Airport, we re- called pleasant memories of that wonderful class of T64. As reporters for the Dallas TIMES-HERALD, we were assigned the duty of covering this class reunion. While on our trip we met several old friends, formerly from Turkey Tail Territory. The pilot on our TWA flight was Charles Curtis. Remembering how reckless he was with Bus 32 in school, we were frightened--but only for a moment. We also saw Frances Guffey and Janice Sisk performing their duties as airline stewardesses in the same gracious manner they showed at school. At the airport we recognized Kenny Clark and Charles McGee at the ticket office. In the lobby we met that famous fashion designer, Reba Burleson from Macy’s of New York, accompanied by her two lovely models, Joyce Brown and Linda Watson. Also arriving from New York City was Margaret Cuthbertson, that world-renowned soprano from the Metropolitan Opera. As soon as we collected our baggage, we called the Sooper-Dooper Taxi Company to send a taxi to the airport immediately. To our amazement, none other than Carliss Anderson, that speed demon from G.A., was the driver. We asked Carliss Anderson to rush into the city so that we could meet all our old friends. Cruising along at 75 miles per hour, we were disheartened to notice all the many changes that had taken place in Glen Alpine. Suddenly, sirens started blowing and that Mlive wire from the State Patrol, Bobby Mauney, stopped us for speeding. He was very lenient and he allowed us to continue on our way. By that afternoon many of our old friends were swarming over the entire G.A. High campus. We were privileged to meet that big wheel in North Carolina politics, Randall Brackett, who apparently was politicking on reunion day. (We always knew Randall was a big bag of wind at school.) At his side was his campaign manager, Wayne Costner, who has much influence in the western part of the state. We couldn’t help but notice all the stars Glen Alpine had produced . . . Charles Pitts, that dashing, debonair owner of the Play Boy Club, nationally known night club . . . David Eggers, that suave Cassanova-type actor appearing in Chain Gang at the Snake Pit . . . Edwina Fox, that charming actress currently appearing in Telstar, a nation- wide sensation--especially for those young at heart. Not only did Glen Alpine produce many great stars but also many influential people . . . Connor Hennessee, a rich tycoon in the business world . . . Sandra Ferguson, chief brain surgeon at St. Joseph's Hospital in Asheville . . . Nancy Puckett, radiologist at St. Joseph's, who flew down from Asheville for the reunion . . . Christine Patton . . famed attorney-at-law in New Orleans (a female Perry Mason-type) . . . Tommy McNeely, popular radio announcer for WRAC in Glen Alpine . . . James White, a leading psychiatrist presently lecturing on You and Yours at The Community House in Morganton. The sports world was not without its share of Glen Alpine graduates . . . Ken Black, center for the New York Giants and top-paid player in the National Football League . . . Paul Noles, Number One waterboy for the Los Angeles Dodgers; in the off season he trains for the up-coming oaseball year. (Those buckets sure get heavy, don't they Paul?) . . . Bruce Pollard, star center of the Cincinnati Royals of the National Basketball League . . . James Shell, owner of nis speedway in Brevard . . . Johnny Wilson and Glenda Allen, those two leading hot-rodders of the racing world, who are the featured attraction at Shell's Brevard Speedway. (Both possess many beautiful trophies) . . . Paul Bulter, holder of the World Swimming Title, who is soon to complete in international competition at Lima, Peru. Joining him in Peru will be another swimming champion, Becky Biggerstaff. There are many graduates who occupy various positions in all facets of life . . . David Walker and Ronald Barrett, chief chemists for Purina Dog Chow . . . Vonda Stroupe, now appearing in that spine-tingling movie ’Was That Necessary? . . . Tommy Brittain, investigator for the Federal Bureau of Investigation . . . Brenda McCurry and Johnny Abernathy, currently appearing as Mr. and Mrs. Bozo at Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus . . . Kenneth Penley, ringmaster for the circus, whom we noticed at the reunion, building up Johnny and Brenda's act. Greg Cagle was unable to attend the reunion because he is in Europe covering the racing's Grand Prix for the Washington POST. Also unable to attend were Glenda Keller and Ronnie Greer, co-social editors for POST. Linda Guigou is employed by Allied Artist's, Incorporated. Jean Baker is the social butterfly of all Turkey Tail Land. While Dorothy Carson and Frances Browning operate a beauty salon on the corner of Westminister Avenue, directly across the street is a good old-fashioned salame joint owned and operated by Ray Baker and Mike Burleson. Robert Patton is a widely respected pharmacist in the area. (We always knew Robert had experience in drugs.) Mack Foreman owns a herd of goats in near Butte, Montana. Mack keeps those goats on the move, chasing them on his motorcycle. Earlene Bowers knits garments for Shetland Sweaters, Inc. David Pendergraft and Willie Cooper are geologists for Fossil Finders of America. Within a few months, these two fossil hunters will be trudging in darkest Africa. (We're sure they will turn up some fossil-head there.) Jean Duffey is a private secretary for the Atomic Energy Commission at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Garland Patton is employed by the office of the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare in the same building at Oak Ridge. Billy Stamey and Tommy Vines are the current authors of that sensational new book, YOU AND YOUR DANDRUFF. We have just been informed that Fred Clontz has revised WEBSTER'S DICTIONARY naming it WEBSTER'S CLONTZ DICTIONARY. There is the roll call of G.A.'s 1964 graduates . . . what memories! ! ! ! As we boarded our plane to return to Dallas, one big impression of our former classmates remained with us: they were still the same group, at heart, as they were on graduation night.
