In the heart: of old Burke County, Neath the skies of blue, ‘Stands our noble Alma Mater, Glorious to view. | - Lift the chorus, speed it onward, May it never fail, er Hail to thee, our Alma Mater, G.A.S. all hail! Classic in her broad proportion, | Looks she proudly down, — | Reared against the arch of heaven, | With her stars for crown. , Lift the chorus, speed it onward, May it never fail, : Hail to thee, our Alma Mater, G.A.S. all hail! : GLEN ALPINE HIGH SCHOOL Glen Alpine, North Carolina u, f ( VOLUME IX Turkey Tail 4 Foreword The ninth edition of the ''Turkey Tail is represented bya symphony. The musical composition is divided into four sections: First Movement, Second Movement, Third Movement, and the Finale. The arrangements are by the Junior and Senior Classes of Glen Alpine High School. It is their hope to let the year 1955-1956 linger in your mind like some nostalgic melody. Dedication Our symphony begins with an overture . .the Senior Class of Glen Alpine High School gratefully dedicates the ''Turkey Tail of 1956to... Miss Martha Thomasson, the head of our music department. Patience, long hours, and physicaland mental toil are partofherdaily schedule. She has accom- plished much, and noone is more deserving than she, Her persistence is rewarded by the results of her labors. ‘Give a child not only a book he can read, and teach him to read it,but give him also a horn he can blow, and teach him to blow it. Horn blowing, too, is education. Band Banddirector: Miss Martha Thomasson, Drum major: Royce Byrd, Majorettes: Libby Giles, Dottee Giles, Carolyn McFalls, Beth Bobbitt. There, in the door of a cavern, sat three witches aroundaboiling cauldron, They were all stirring its contents and repeating in unison, ‘‘Double, double, toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble.’’ AsIdrewclose, there suddenly appear - ed from the murky depths of the cauldron many apparitions, which I surprisingly recognized as my classmates of 1956. First there appeared Nell Lail, a beloved home economics teacher, and who should I see next but Barbara Lea Taylor asa prominent phys - ical therapist.. As 1 stood there, 1 saw, one by one, my classmates as they would be in 1970. Betty Ruth Cooper was a private nurse at Broad- oaks; Doris Moore was head nurse at the Glen Alpine Rest Home. The next scene was very touching--Carolyn Saulman and Linda McKinney were sitting around the home fires. ThenI sawa group which had gone elsewhere to make their fortunes. A large number had gone to New York. The scene unraveled itself and I beheld it as a large painting in oil. There in the slums of New York was Donnie Maloney, doing a very worthwhile job as a social worker. Martha Deaton,a reporter for the New York Times, was doing a story on the evils of the slums. The scene then changed from one extreme to the other. Faye McGinnis was seen in the most exclusive section of New York. By marrying a rich young tycoon, Faye had acquired Saks Fifth Avenue. I always knew Faye would go places. Itsinterior had beendecorated by Audrey Parton. Edith Puett, Franda Gibbs, and Clara Patton were modeling the latest modes from Paris. Bob Bennett had been off to college and had becomeacivilengineer. To help solve New York's traffic problem, Bob had drawn a blueprint fora new bridge to span the Hudson. Donald McGalliard had just designed a new transport plane for T W A, which now employs Barbara Williams, Lola Jean Sisk and Sylvia Williams as hostesses. I was shocked to see Buster Benfield flying it, but, oh well, Buster always did have his head in the clouds. Every day Buster flys over Gene Prestwood's championship dog farm. Gene has produced five national champions, Gene had to have the best for his dogs, sohe hired the Einstein of the biological world, Jack Lowdermilk. Jack was working on some special formula for dog food. Prophecy On the farm adjoining Gene's was the home of Stanley Rogers. Stanley had become a 4-H Club adviser. Our shorthand lover, Betty McCarthy, was secretary for the Henredon factory, owned and operated by John David Dale, who also employs Peggy Brittain as his designer. Paul Dellinger was head salesman, and Doris Pitts was John David's bookkeeper. Rudolph was one of the foremost sports an- nouncers and was employedby WGA. On his pro- gram he had some of his former classmates for an interview; Gerald Clontz, head football coach at Duke, and Everette Pollard and Frank Kincaid, now stars for rival teamsin professional football. Everette was quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, and Frank was lineman for the Los An- geles Rams. Over Station WGA, announcer Sam Henline was saying, ‘I have a bit of interesting news for youlocal people. Leatha Patton has been chosen by the National Education Association as the out- standing English teacher of the year and our own son of Glen Alpine, Forrest Fleming, has been elected Governor of North Carolina. Nevelyn Bollingeris serving a worthy cause, the National Guard, in which he is now a major. I see that Nevelyn is not the only one serving his country; Martha Franklin, along with Barbara Ann Taylor, is working for the F.B.]. Every day they have lunch in one of Clifton Davis’s chain restaurants, in which Glenn Reep, who went to Paris to study French cuisine, is now head chef. All at once I noticed the apparitions were becoming harder and harder to discern. I em- ployed the witches to show me my future. For an answer they began to chant, ‘Double, double, toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble.”’ ‘Before they completely disappeared, I thought I saw the sign of a commissioned officer in the U. S. Navy. Class Prophet Barbara Shook Last Will And Cestament We, the Senior Class of 1956, before saying farewell, want to leave something that will keep us in memory in the years to come.
