Class History Smiling, but with a certain feeling of nostalgia, the high school girl in cap and gown stepped up to receive her diploma. The long-awaited moment had come! She had reached her ultimate goal—the goal she had been working toward fortwelve years. But now, with her destination at hand, the realization suddenly dawned on her that she would soon be leaving high school and em- barking on an entirely new venture in life. Things that had always been taken for granted, that had seemed relatively unimportant at the time, suddenly as- sumed larger proportions, Her mind wandered back to the time when she and her classmates entered the first grade--a lovable, but very mischievous group of youngsters. Smiling to herself, she remembered how every afternoon about ten minutes before the bell rang, just as regularly as the clock, big tears could be seen rolling down poor little Sue Dale’s cheeks. Yes, you guessed it! Someone had hidden her crayons, Her thoughts slipping forward several years, she remembered eighth grade graduation day and all the fun the class had practicing their program. She suppressed a giggle when she thought of the day when the whole class had to practice getting up and sitting down for about an hour because they couldn't seem to rise properly enough to suit the teachers. Then, before they knew it, they became a class of lowly freshmen in high school. But they certainly didn’t feel so lowly, as she remembered. It was just the other way around! The years passed swiftly, and her thoughts, slipping forward again, rested on that all-important occasion—the Junior-Senior Banquet. The theme for the banquet, she recalled, was ‘‘Treasure Island,’’ and a very appropriate one she thought, for she knewthat that occasion would always remain a treasure in the memories of her classmates. The only disconcerting note in the banquet, as Glen Dale would say, was the fact that his ham was just a trifle tough—a sit- uation which was soon remedied by a few well-placed strokes of his pocket knife. Her mind was filled with memories of other such happy times—the Wash- ington trip, the trip to Asheville, Class Night, football and basketball games — when a whisper from one of her classmates brought her back to the present, and to thoughts of the future. She wondered what the future held in store for her and her classmates, and hoped that it held success and happiness for all of them, as they embarked on their ‘‘high adventure.’’ Lenora Ann Black Class Historian eee:
