FOREWORD The legend connected to the name ‘Turkey Tail” is very odd. During the 1800’s when Glen Alpine was only a small village, a man, now unknown, cut down a tree on the hill overlooking the town. As the tree lay there, limbs began to shoot from the roots. Finally leaves began to spread cn the limbs in a fan-shaped array. Railroad workers passing through during the evening twi- light would look up at the hill and say, “Well there’s the old turkey with her tail feathers spread.” And since then Glen Alpine has been humorously called “Turkey Tail.” Another feather has fallen from the turkey’s tail as we, the Senior class of 1951, have striven to prepare a future for ourselves while in school. It has not all been work nor play. We have accomplished much, but who is to remember us after we leave our Alma Mater? Will we be just another graduating class? We hope not. It is for this reason we leave this annual to be read and cherished. Thus we leave a lasting memory of the class of ’51; a memory that shall ever be refreshed as the pages of this book are turned.
