Interference! Managers Seay and Cosby Relax. JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL For the Baby Panthers it was the same old story—PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE—with but one opportunity to sport their wares. Arranging an adequate schedule for these future Panther players is a problem that our coaches find hard to overcome. However, this did not lessen the enthusiasm with which Coach Smith and his proteges went at the task of building players for the varsity eleven. In their one contest the Jayvees crushed the Varina Bees” 33-0. The contest was played under the arcs at Varina and found Edwin Berryman, Charles Davis, Ray Chapman, Otha Campbell and a host of others in starring roles. Coach Smith and the entire Jayvee Squad deserve lots of credit for a job well done. We all know that when future Panther elevens are built they will be made from the boys who learned their football A-B-C’s on the Jayvee Squad. First row: Hugh Johnson, Bubba Garnette, Horace Worrell, Billy Palmore, George Niedermayer, Otha Camp- bell. Second row: Buddy Stotts, James Swann, Robert Galaspie, Donald Barrett, Edwin Berryman, David Adams. Third row: Edward O’Brien, Roy Moxley, John Smith, Raymond Chapman, Charles Pollard. Fourth row: Robert Brooks, Billy Whitemore, Ted Lake, Richard Buck, Maynard Dalton, Jackie Whitehurst. Fifth row: Stuart Smith, Coach; Charles Davis, William Kelley, Bill Holliday, Preston Campbell, Edward Flippen. Sixth row: Charlie Seay, Manager.

VARSITY BASKETBALL The Panthers copped their second title in district play this year when the basketball squad won the annual tournament held at Randolph-Macon. With a won-lost record of 11-6 the Panthers were seeded fourth in the tournament but the boys saved their best for last and won out by defeating Chester, James Monroe and Falmouth, 1949 winners. In the state playoff the Panthers were defeated in the opening round by South Boston 40-38 in a game that was decided in the last minute of play.
