Vice-President [9] Senior Class History September 10, 1949 dawned bright and clear. From all over the western end of Henrico County, 189 bright eyed, but somewhat fearful eighth graders gathered at Glen Allen. This was the Class of 1950, the first eighth grade class under the new 12 year system. As time went by and the years progressed, the Class of ‘50 chalked up more and more ‘firsts’. We were the first freshman class in G. A.’s hisiory to have a vice-president of the S. C. A. elected from our midst. The next year, we became the first sophomore class to furnish the S. C. A. with its president and treasurer. In the first part of our junior year we took another first by having all four S. C. A. officers, members of our class. We became the first sophomore class to take part in the Junior-Senior Prom and the only class to attend three different proms. Most of our first year at Glen Allen was spent getting used to the place. It was quite different from Dumbarton, or Ridge, or Short Pump, or Longdale. At first, the upperclassmen regarded us as some strange new type of creature that inhabited the little red ‘chicken coop’ behind the main building. Perhaps they envied us just a little bit, too. We had an unexpected holiday for the first week of school while work on the annex was being completed. Pretty soon we settled down and found that we were a part of Glen Allen. One of the outstanding features of ihat year was G. A.’s undefeated, untied, and unscored on football team. Then came our freshman year. Who can forget the grand and glorious Freshman Party? The gym was decorated as a circus midway and the refreshments were peanuts, candy apples, and pink lemonade. Equally well remembered is the big pep rally before the Highland Springs game, with a dummy dressed like Nimon hanging from ihe water tower. And before we knew it, we were sopho- mores. We began taking part in more and more extracurricular activities. Sophomores represented Glen Allen on the athletic field and in the literary contests as well. We also began holding offices in the SCA and other student organizations. That was the year we saw the Panthers lose their first and only football game while we were at Glen Allen, a 20-0 decision to Highland Springs. The Panthers won the district basketball tournament and advanced to the finals in the state meet at Roanoke before being downed by Norton. G. A. also won the state championship for debating. In May of that year, seven sophomores were tapped into the newly organized Glen Allen chapter of the Beta Club. September 8, 1948 caught up with us before we knew it, and we were juniors. Because of the small senior class, we held most of the important offices in school, from SCA president on down. One of the most memorable events of our junior year was the trip to Williamsburg by the history classes. Besides learning a great deal about colonial life, we had lots of fun. Our football team gave us another undefeated season and then went on to win the regional championship from Suffolk 19-0. A large number of juniors were among the Beta Club members who aitended the state convention at Roanoke in March. A group of junior girls planned and directed May Day. And then the magic day arrived when we were seniors! To us belonged the exclusive right of marching out the center aisle at the end of assemblies. We’ll long remember the sessions of Congress and the court trials in Mr. Johnson’s government classes. Another regional champion- ship and undefeated season was won by the football team. Who can forget the way the Panther five played basketball to upset favored James Monroe and Falmouth in the district 2 tournament at Randolph-Macon or the heart- breaking two-point loss to South Boston in the state meet. April brought us the literary contests and our third Prom. Before we knew it, it was May and time for the May Day festival. We chalked up another ‘first’ by being the first class in many years to have boys in the May Court. Now the time has come when our stay at Glen Allen is rapidly drawing to a close. May we always remember Glen Allen and cherish the memories of the years spent at our Alma Mater. For the second consecutive year the Glen Allen Panthers were crowned champions of District I] Group II. This gave us the right to play the District | winner for the Eastern Regional Title. This crown was also added to our laurels when we defeated Suffolk High School 19-0 in the Peanut City. The Panthers rolled through an eight game schedule undefeated in annexing the District crown. The victory in the playoff game made the Panther record for the past 6 years read 50 wins, 1 loss and 1 tie. [94 ] K. VAUGHAN Tinsley, Dalton and Thacker Around End “All the way—52” Against Falmouth—Precision!! GLEN ALLEN 18—BENEDICTINE 7 Glen Allen made its bow into city competition for the first time. Our entrance was an auspicious one as we defeated the Cadets of Benedictine 18-7. The Panthers drew first blood early in the opening quarter on a pass from Wilson Tinsley to Charles Faber. A long pass from Rhoades to Pugh in the second period put the Cadets ahead 7-6 at half time. Two fourth period scores by Tinsley netted Glen Allen its opening victory 18-7. A stalwart defense placed by co-captain Billy Thacker, Sherwood Frostick, Kenny Vaughan, Robert Fulton and Duke Thacker held the Cadets to a net gain of 44 yards. Glen Allen co-captain Wilson Tinsley was the whole offensive show as he passed for 1 score and ran for the other two. GLEN ALLEN 25—MANCHESTER 6 Using a set of portable lights the Panthers played the first night game ever staged on the school field. Manchester became victim number two on our 1949 schedule as we rolled up a sluggish 25—6 victory. Jackson, Faber, Vaughan and Tinsley scored touchdowns for the Red and Blue. The team failed to exhibit the smooth functioning we saw in the Benedictine game but still had enough power to prevail over the Lancers of Manchester. : GLEN ALLEN 18—JAMES MONROE O Glen Allen evened its 10-year record with James Monroe at 5 and 5 when we trounced the Yellow Jackets 27-0 in Fredericksburg. On defense our team stopped the Monroe attack cold and did not allow the Jackets a firstdown during the third and fourth quarter play. Panther scores were tallied by Tinsley, who went over three times, and Ed Jackson who tallied on a pass from Charles Brandmahl. Frostick Leads—Clinard Follows!! Page Gains Against Suffolk!! [95 ] Panther’s Move by Air. Practice—We Love It!!! GLEN ALLEN 37—FALMOUTH 6 Glen Allen made its second trip to Fredericksburg and while there rolled to its fourth victory, achieved by walloping the Falmouth Indians 37-6. Long runs and well executed pass plays featured the Panther attack as the Red and Blue scored 3 times in each half. The entire Panther squad participated in this fray as the team prepped for its annual game with Highland Springs. GLEN ALLEN 14—HIGHLAND SPRINGS 7 The Panther team was not up to par for its annual clash with the Springers but managed to eke out a 14-7 victory. No doubt a three weeks lay off had caused the squad to lose some of its sharpness, for the club looked very ragged in the contest played before 6,500 fans in City Stadium. A poor first half saw the teams leave the field in a 7-7 deadlock with the Panther score coming on a 53-yard gallop by Tinsley. A stormy session in the dressing room returned the Red and Blue to tip top form for they held the Highlanders to minus yardage the second half and allowed them no first downs. We also managed to push over one touchdown in the 4th period to provide the margin of victory. This game was marked by its bruising style of play with some of the best tackling ever seen on the Stadium sod. Both teams played hard and rough football but the Panthers had just a shade better of the battle. GLEN ALLEN 54—CULPEPER 12 Playing before a sparse crowd of 1,500 in bitter cold weather the Red and Blue football machine blazed its way to its largest score of the season when they smashed Culpeper 54-12. There was action a-plenty as the team gave the fans some of the best football of the season. Every member of the Panther squad played in this contest and scores were tallied by Tinsley, Clinard, Trice, Dalton, Cristolph, Vaughan and Jackson. The Bruiser, Bruises!! Tinsley Scores!! [96 J Hit ‘Em High—Hit ‘Em Low! Quick Pass to Trice—T. D. GLEN ALLEN 32—CHESTER O Glen Allen closed its 1949 season by defeating Thomas Dale of Chester 32-0 in a game that decided the championship of District Il. Playing before a Thanksgiving morning crowd of 2,000 the Panthers showed they were ready for this one by taking the opening kickoff and driving 84 yards for the first score. Co-captain Tinsley bucked over and added the point to put the Red and Blue in front 7-0 in the first five minutes. From then on the Panthers com- pletely dominated play as the defense sparked by the outstanding linebacking of Boo Kennedy completely stymied the Winged-T of the Chester club. Feature of the game was a spine-tingling 55-yard run through a broken field by Kenny Vaughan. Key blocks by Ed Jackson, Jimmy Price, and Billy Thacker paved the way for “The Bruiser’’ to go all the way. ‘’Nasty’’ Powers became the first lineman to score this season when he scooped up a blocked Dale punt and carried it 32 yards into the end zone. GLEN ALLEN 19—SUFFOLK 0 This should be called the game of ‘seconds.’ For the second time we were crowned champions of District Il which for the second time gave us the right to play for the Eastern Regional Title. Going even further we met Suffolk, District | winner for the second time, and for the second time we defeated them by the score of 19-0. Co-captain Tinsley wore his famed “88” for the last time and scored every point as the Red and Blue won over the Red Raiders. Tinsley went 62 yards for tally number one, bucked two yards for number two and smashed through from three yards out to run his season total to 117 points, a new Glen Allen and Henrico County record. After the first quarter, line play led by Frostick, Fulton and Price completely bottled up the Red Raider attack and Glen Allen won handily. This victory brought the Eastern Regional Title to Glen Allen for—yep! You guessed it—the second time. Brandmahl Moves Against Raiders! 31-Check! Clinard Scores Again! Interference! Managers Seay and Cosby Relax. JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL For the Baby Panthers it was the same old story—PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE—with but one opportunity to sport their wares. Arranging an adequate schedule for these future Panther players is a problem that our coaches find hard to overcome. However, this did not lessen the enthusiasm with which Coach Smith and_his proteges went at the task of building players for the varsity eleven. In their one contest the Jayvees crushed the Varina Bees” 33-0. The contest was played under the arcs at Varina and found Edwin Berryman, Charles Davis, Ray Chapman, Otha Campbell and a host of others in starring roles. Coach Smith and the entire Jayvee Squad deserve lots of credit for a job well done. We all know that when future Panther elevens are built they will be made from the boys who learned their football A-B-C’s on the Jayvee Squad. VARSITY BASKETBALL The Panthers copped their second title in district play this year when the basketball squad won the annual tournament held at Randolph-Macon. With a won-lost record of 11-6 the Panthers were seeded fourth in the tournament but the boys saved their best for last and won out by defeating Chester, James Monroe and Falmouth, 1949 winners. In the state playoff the Panthers were defeated in the opening round by South Boston 40-38 in a game that was decided in the last minute of play. A victory by Culpeper over Fal- mouth High School made it possible for the Panthers to come home in front in the District race.’ Glen Allen’s only loss was to James Monroe in a nocturnal contest but they more than avenged this 5-4 defeat by crushing the Yellow Jackets 13-2 in a return contest. The pitching staff was paced by Jimmie Wright who won nine and lost none. John Gilbert won the other two victories. Others who saw action on the mound included Lewis Gilbert, Gerald Ayers and Donald Lloyd. The team usually took the field with Charles Faber behind the plate, Sherwood Frostick on first, Ted Page at second, Charles Brandmahl or Henry Failing at short, Wilson Tinsley at third, and in the outfield Coach Gasser depended on Jimmy Price, Edward Jackson, Howard Trice or Eddie Seay.
