Zin ilillemutiam BRUCE KARL BLAKE On January 31, 1952 our class experienced a great loss, when Bruce Karl Blake passed away. Bruce, a good student, possessed a congenial personality which attracted everyone. He is remembered for his natural athletic ability, which all admired. In his memory, We, the Class of 195 3, pay out humble tribute to one who is gone, but who will not be for- gotten. 23 Freshman Dancing Faculty Advisor HISTORY FRESHMAN In the fall of 1949 we found ourselves bewildered freshmen, wandering through the halls of G.H.S. Our homerooms were B2, B7, and 105, and our class advisor was Mr. Plante. We elected Charles Nutt as our president, Anthony Valdati as our vice- president. We also chose Lois Doubleday for our secretary and Harold Bantly for our treasurer. Lois Manfreda and John Seiler were our Student Council representatives. We then held a series of class meetings, resulting in the selection of turquoise and gold as our class colors and We shall be what we make ourselves as our class motto. Our first big social event was the Freshman Party sponsored by the Student Council. Everyone enjoyed himself thoroughly and agreed the party was a great success. As a supplement to our weekly dancing classes we decided to add a monthly tea-dance which turned out to be very well-liked. Time passed swiftly and before we could realize what was happening, june was upon us. As we crammed for final exams we started to think of our first year at G.H.S. and began to look forward to next year when he would return as sophomores. SOPHOMORE As September rolled around again, we returned to G.H.S. and started our second year. We no longer were uncertain freshmen, but proud sophomores. We discovered first of all that we would have the same homerooms as in our freshman year, with Mrs. Leahy serving as our class advisor. Then we began with a bang by electing Burton Turner, presidentg Anthony Valdati, vice-president, Carol Mount, secretaryg and Cynthia Rivers, custodian of our funds. We chose Lois Manfreda, Jane Elliott, Harold Bantly, and Charles Nutt to represent us in our school government. At a class meeting we selected a committee to look into the matter of class rings. We decided to use the school seal, hoping that future classes would follow our ex- ample. and thus standardize the rings of G.H.S. The most important social event for us this year was the Sophomore Hop, which we help in April. The theme of our Hop was April Showers. Caroline Dondi and Bruce Blake were crowned King and Queen. At the New England Festival of Music held in Auburn, Maine, we were represented by Burton Turner. In june we looked expectantly to our third year and back on our second year in G.H.S. which was marked by the losses of class members William Darby, Francis DelMastro, Gail Hodge, john Seiler, and Francis Vicecauskus. Sophomore Hop Mrs. Leahy Oflicers - Counci1,Members Fm-nlrv Arlvisnr ' . ' Mr. Plante Officers - Council Members Junior Prom Mrs. Colburne Officers - Council Members Faculty Advisor JUNIOR The first order of business in our junior year was to elect class officers. After hectic balloting in our new homerooms, 208 and 209, in an election presided over by our class advisor, Mrs. Colburne, the honors went to jane Elliott, president, Jean Lanerie, vice-president, Carol Mount, secretary: and Joanne Saglio, treasurer. To the Student Council we sent Harold Bantly, Jane Elliott, Paul Landry, and Lois Manfreda. At our first class meeting the subject of the Junior Prom was brought up. Commit- tees were appointed and after much preparation Make Believe was held on November 16. Jean Lanerie and Guy Goethner were chosen King and Queen. As the year moved on, Harold Bantly was selected to participate in the All-State Chorus. At the New England Festival of Music held in New Britain, we were represented by Guy Goethner, jean Lanerie, and Burton Turner. The year moved on and our numbers were thinned by the losses of Bruce Blake, Paul Landry, Carol Mount, Ellen Pratt, and jack Vasile. Caroline Dondi and Carl Ducey replaced Carol Mount and Paul Landry respectively in their class oflices. These numerical losses were partially balanced by the addition of Leona johnson, Albert Hall, and Fred Boyd. As the year drew to a close, it was announced that Harold Bantly, Burton Turner, and Anthony Valdati were to represent us at Nutmeg Boys' State and jane Elliott and Cynthia Rivers at Laurel Girls' State. We happily looked back on three successful years at G.H.S., and were eager to embark upon our fourth year. SENIOR Our senior year began with the assignment of seniors to the traditional 4th year homerooms, 107 and 109, and the usual hustling at our first class meeting. We decided to deal with Loring Studios for yearbook pictures. Mr. Wasilielf, our faculty advisor this year, was asked to choose the yearbook staff. We later elected class ofiicers: jane Elliott, president, Richard O'Dell, vice- presi- dentg Jean Lanerie, secretary, and Cynthia Rivers, treasurer. Our new Student Council representatives were jane Elliott, Richard O'Dell, Stephen Woinicki, Cynthia Rivers, Lois Manfreda and Harold Bantly, Lois, Jane, and Harold were later elected secretary, vice-president, and president, respectively, of the Council. After some weeks had sped by, we learned that Joanne Segevick and Charles Nutt were to represent us at the All-State Chorus, and that Roxana Cleaves and Burton Turner were to represent us in the New England Festival of Music held in Brookline, Massachusetts. An addition to our class was made in the person of Austin Harlow. After a hectic year of activities. including the senior play, and the Senior Ball, the year drew to an end. On Class Day, after the ceremony and autograph party, we traveled by bus to Ted Hilton's where everyone enjoyed himself. As we reflect on our four years at G.H.S. we cannot help but think of pleasant memories that will stay forever. Q . X t E R L.. We are aboard a new Jetson Space Ship on our way to Hart- ford, Connecticut, to meet our friend and former classmate, MARGARET HOUSE. We are to accompany her back to Venus, as she is the chief representative from the World to the United Universe Geologists' meeting. As our ship streaks into Space Port Fifty-Three, we notice that ANTHONY VALDATI is the director of the Space-Port Control Tower. He expertly guides the ship in on the Telomatic Control Beam, and our inter-planetary hostess, JEAN LANERIE, conducts us into the receiving station. While GUY GOETHNER, the customs officer, checks our baggage, we order an ultrasonic milkshake from JOAN SEILER, the soda jerk at ARTHUR DOUGLAS' Space Bar. Almost immediately our ailing stomachs need the assistance of the Port Physician, Dr. SUSAN GOODRICH. She comes to our aid by prescribing a large dose of RICHARD KRETZMER's new formula, Bicatbonate of Coca-Cola, which is speedily administered by Nurse KATHLEEN JONES. We feel better at once, and having seen so many former classmates of GHS, we decide to detour via Glastonbury to see if we can find more successful friends. So we board a shuttle-ship piloted by Captain FRED BOYD, and reach our destina- tion, Viele Field, very quickly. We learn that this port was named for WARREN VIELE because he was the first man to fly to the moon. We hail the latest model in taxis headed for Glastonbury. Our driver, EDWARD ZEZUT, cautiously speeds out of a No-Parking area and passes a petit red put-put, practically hidden under its rider, RICHARD O'DELL. We wave to Dick as we zoom by. When we arrive in Glastonbury the first change we notice is BRIAN DRAPER's new three-dimensional movie theater. As we pass by we hear thunderous peals of laughter coming from inside. We ask the ticket-seller, EVELYN GROH, what's going on and she tells us that it is DOLORES DRUMM watching the latest RAY GARDINER-THOMAS O'DELL movie. We understand her mirth, but haven't time to stop. Eddie drives us to the old high school which we find has been converted into a grammar school as planned. We ask JANE ELLIOTT, the superintendent, to show us around. In the second grade we find CYNTHIA RIVERS, patient as always, slowly losing her patience. JANE KELLOGG also has her hands filled with the unruly fifth graders. We fondly remember '53 as we leave the old building. Now we take a turn around the Matson Hill section where we find ALBERT FERRARI running a new modernized farm. He calls his foreman, CHRISTOPHER CLEMENS, who directs us to the cider mill operated by ROBERT FUNK. Here Bob greets us with enormous mugs of his special cider which he concocted and per- fected at the suggestions of CAROLINE DONDI, chief taster. Outside the door we spy ROBERT MOODY sneaking away with a keg for his latest car, which runs on anything. Leaving the farm we head back toward Glastonbury Center. On the way we stop for fuel at HARRY EVANS' ultra-modern fuel center, which caters especially to beautiful women. We are pleased to learn that business is booming since all the love- lies come here. Not wishing to hinder business any longer, we ask our driver to go on. Eddie says his union works only half a day, so we hail DONALD WHITE, who is passing in his customized jetmobile. As we cruise along, our attention is diverted by ELEANOR GOODALE's brand new house-to-the-sky. We stretch our necks to see the roof, and instead see BARRY ELLIOTT piloting an old-fashioned helicopter. He is merrily chugging overhead with a loud speaker attachment advertising PHILIP FOURNIER's Hot Air Factory, which involves a new principal of heating. Finally arriving at the Center, we greet Space Cadet VAUGH ADDINGTON, who is sitting outside the library studying his Space Manual. He thoroughly disap- proves of it although it was written by one of his fellow classmates at GHS, CHARLES NUTT. We listen to his arguments for a few minutes and then decide to get some lunch. Fred directs us to ORIE NIVER's Flying Teacup where the best blended teas are served. As we sit down we are approached by ROBERT FERRY, the Sing- ing Waiter, who is vocalizing today's menu. We order our meal and Bob tells us that the cook is ISABELLA GIANNOCCARI, who also blends the teas. Adjoining the teashop is PATRICIA HORVATH's Art Studio, where we notice JOHN RUFF, the new Mr. America, posing for Vibberts Vitality Vegetable Cereal fk 1' which, incidentally, is headed by NANCY VIBBERTS. VIRGIL Pete PRENTICE is there too, practicing his southern technique on JOYCE CAVANNA, the Dairy' Queen. , Outside once more we step back as the fire engine fiashes by with fire chief WARREN BANTLE at the wheel. We hop into a nearby aero-car and find HEN- RIET'I'E CHAMPAGNE at the wheel. She is all excited as this is her first scoop for the Glastonbury Citizen. We arrive at the fire, and find LEONA JOHNSON's house in fiames. However, firemen PAUL PAGLIUGHI and DONALD PAOLE quickly put out the fire and little damage is done. On our way back to the Center we pass Police Officer GEORGE NOVOTASKY who is arresting SHIRLEY MALECKY for speeding. We stop and hear Shirley insisting - Honestly, I um going to a fire. In order to help plead her case, we go back to the station with her. At the station, Chief of Police FRANK PEHR disregards her alibi and collects the fine. We are about to leave when Sheriff DOUGLAS ALLEN comes in with ROBERT KELLEY and RAYMOND KOCUM who were caught poaching pheasants on ROY DUDZIC's game reserve. The boys do some fast talking and even invite the Sheriff to try the hunting there, but their attempt is unsuccessful. After locking up our unlucky classmates. Doug invites us for a spin in his latest model aero-car. We chat for a while about old times as we head out East. On Hebron Avenue we spy a For Sale sign on a rather dilapidated structure. Then, much to our surprise, an old-fashioned Cadillac convertible glides to a stop and STEPHEN WOINICKI, a real estate agent, hops out with a customer, RUTH HUT- SON. As We whiz by en route to Arbor Acres we hear Steve on our audio-meter try- ing to sell the place by extolling the finer points of this Delightful little cottage to a rather doubtful Ruth. At Arbor Acres LETITIA and JOANNE SAGLIO greet us with a warm hello. Lee tells us about the new Luna Chickens which Joanne discovered on her recent excursion to the moon. We hear all about the trip while we tour the ultra-modern farm. When we tell the girls that we are going to Hartford, they suggest we hop over with AUSTIN HARLOW, who is their delivery man. We say goodby to everybody and head for the big city. In Hartford Austin leaves us at the corner of Asylum and Main. On our Way down Asylum Street we stop in at MURRAY VARAT's famous electronic center to buy parts for our Thermospacemaster. The obliging clerk, ALICE CALL, asks us if we would like to have them adjust it there. We say yes, and she invites us in for a chat while these days, for Loctor works for bath soap, Alice we wait. She tells us that PATRICIA MORRISSEY is a successful actress especially in mystery-comedies. JANE HARDIE is the advertising manager and Pramble, now owned by CARL DUCEY. JOANNE SEGEVICK also the company as the chief model. Their latest product is a new miracle Purple Bubble. invites us to turn on the Kinescope, and we are just in time to catch CHARLES REED directing the fanfare for the new serial, One Woman's Family starring JANET KELLER. The word from the sponsor is announced by BURTON' TURNER who is telling the world about Purple Bubble. Murray comes in just then with our newly adjusted gadget, as we thank him and Alice and head toward the Capitol. On our way we stop in at MICHAEL YETISHEFSKY's sporting goods store. Mike tells us that many of his best customers are graduates of GHS. Outside we see PATRICIA FERRY's mobile hairdressing studio. ROXANA CLEAVES is inside drying her hair which she just had dyed to match her new blue Jaguar. MARY HALUN is there, too, as a manicurist. She is putting the finishing touches on MARY WILSON's nails. Mary had them done in flame yellow today. Pat is doing ROSANNE PRELI's hair in the style-of-the-month, Green Torpedo. We leave the booming business and soon arrive at the Capitol. On the steps we are not surprised to meet HAROLD BANTLY. He pauses for a minute to tell us he has finally made the Capitol as Chief Messenger Boy for the Governor. Inside the spacious building we find JAY TREPP, Comptroller, talking with his secretary, LOIS MANFREDA. They are discussing a raise for the Governor's chambermaid, LOIS DOUBLEDAY. We would like to stop and talk, but it is time to meet Margaret. She is waiting for us at the new cloud-scraper hotel run by CLAUDETTE LAMAY. There the smiling hostess, MARION RICHARDSON, calls Margaret, and we board an aero-car bound for the Space Port. - Once again the customs oflicer checks our baggage and we board the Jetson. Tony expertly guides us off on the Telomatic Beam and we shoot off 'into space. On our way back home to Venus we fondlv remember our adventures of the day, much pleased at having met all our successful classmates of '53. i E I-Cu .CJ 52:14 U : : :UPQH H050 oz: :gm Na DEW' --252 :NGUDMENE MCMQBB EO., OH Eg?
