Time and time again the team was behind but with the determined spirit which the boys had they generally pulled through to victory. The season's record was eight wins two defeats and one tie. Coach Hartwell did a remarkable job in molding together a winning aggregation for Kowalsky Tryon and Marufti who were regulars the previous year. Sweet had played enough at center to prove he could till that position. The remainder of the team had to be made up of rookies. These rookies proved to be as able as the veterans at all times. Glastonburys hoopsters twenty two strong reported to Coach Hartwell for practice early in December The boys with a schedule of fourteen games ahead of them got right down to serious work Many veterans were bactc including Sweet Tryon Pitney Kowalsky Dysenchuck and Baribault Our quintet opened its season agaxnst the C D champions Ellsworth G H S had never played these lads on their regular scedule having met them last year in the C D finals In a game which saw Tryon Sweet and Maruffi star Glastonbury lost 35 to 22 The second game of the season saw Pitney lead our boys to victory over Bacon Academy by a score of 29 to 24 Pitney gained confidence in this game and scored l2 points Charlie Tryon was absent from the line up due to a sprained ankle I1m'Kinne a second team regular al o suffered an iniured arm during pract1ce which kept him out most of the season Next in line was Bloomfield a team hopeful of obtaining the C D title Sending a team of seasoned stars to the floor they got off to a slow start but finally pulled ahead to win 44 to 37 A 46 to 35 victory over Canton made the record 2 wins against 2 losses The first half featured Pitney who scored a total of 17 points What really made local rooters happy was the fact that Walt Sweet found his eye and kept the nets swishmg for a total of 22 points Friday Ianuary lU was the beginning of hard luck for the home five lost everyone of their remaining ten games. Their first loss of the string was to Bacon Academy --e 32 to 23. A loss to Wethersfield by ascore of 49 to 34 wa. far from a disgrace. The boys from acro.s the river had two great stars in Sweeney and lVlcCue - - they scored 35 of their teaml points. A determined G H S team took the floor in the next contest against our neighbors Portland High School This game marked the half way point in our schedule and the home quintet came out on the hort end of 34 21 score Coach Hartwell shifted Sweet to guard and Baribault to forward in a vain effort to try and break into the win column against our next opponent Canton The change worked fairly well and Glastonbury led l3 8 at half time In the final two stan7as the score see sawed for a time and then Canton pulled ahead to emerge victorious 34 to 2l The victory hungry Glastonbury basketballers were denied again as they lost their fifth game in as many starts to Newington High The score was terrifically close from start to finish both teams evenly matched final score Newington 23 Glastonbury l7 Coach Hartwell used every regular in the preliminary contest against Bloomfield and the extra warm up helped no end The local hoopsters played the best basketball thus far this season in matching their rivals basket for basket throughout a thrilling first half Bloomfield a second half team pulled way ahead in the last two frames to win 40 to 27 Newington vs Glastonbury Will we ever forget that night? G H S Journeyed to Newington in a terrific downpour to lose their seventh game in a row The game was almost a duplicate of the team s first encounter Newing ton victorious 22 l7 Remember this headline in the March issue of the Lantern Wethersfield wins from G H S in final three minutes 35 297 Perhaps this brings to your mind the spine tingling action of this game Coach Hartwell s charges stayed as a team knotting the score at 29 all with 3 minutes of play remaining Wethersfield which again owed its victory to one man Owen Sweeney bore down and held Glastonbury scoreless during those hectic last minutes and won Fresh from the Wethersfield game the boys in blue took the floor against Portland High with a renewed spirit and will to win This game easily the most exciting of the season saw the awakened Glastonbury array lead their opponents for three full periods seven and a half minutes of the final frame during this nerve racking contest? Glastonbury started fast sparked by Tryon and Pitney who was high scorer with 10 points G H S led 20 to l5 at the half way point The first five minutes of the third quarter saw' the nets still until Portland made a free try Sweet who played a beautiful defensive game then was forced to leave the game with four fouls Eollowing this Pitney made the third and final point of the quarter and G H S led 27 l6 Then the final eight minutes they seemed like an eternity Again it was Pitney who opened Glastonbury s scoring Portland scored in return to cut their lead to two points with two minutes left The clock ticked on to read one half minute to play score board read 24 22 G H S Then remember fans? came that fateful foul shot followed by the basket that won for Portland 25 to 24' The fourteenth and final game was played against Ellsworth Memorial High School ln losing its twelfth game 45 22 Glastonbury found itself helpless against the taller Ellsworth five ln summary we can say that only in a few games were there any indi vidual stars The team played as a team for the most part This Iune will see Charlie Tryon who has been the mainstay of the team playing a great game at guard leaving the portals of G H S Richard Pitney will also vacate his post tion at forward Pit turned in some eye filling performances at this spot The experienced Walter Sweet a good all around player will also be graduated in fune lt would not be proper to forget the record of the G H S second team This team was the bright spot of the season they had a seasons record of 7 wins against 7 losses beating every team except Ellsworth and Portland at least once Seniors who made up this squad as well as subs on the first team included Dysenchuck Megson Maruffi Dickinson Kowalsky Kinne These men all played fine basketball and their graduation robs Coach Hartwell of most of his veterans As this is written members of next year s team are practicing and playing practice games Everything points to a fresh start and to a good season in 42 , ' s f . and then lose out.
