LUTZ SILVER NNIVERSARY We, the Class of '47, are proud to dedicate Maroon and Gold to our principal, Leon C. Lutz, on the anniversary of his twentyfhfth year at Glasshoro High School. Coming to Glassboro in 1922, Mr. Lutz taught Latin until February, 1927, when he became acting principal. Later that year he was appointed principal and has served since in that capacity. In March, 1929, he led the triumphal march of students to the new high school building at its present location. Mr. Lutz has done everything possible to make our stay pleasant and we ar: sure no one can forget Mr. Lutz on his visit to dog heaven to see Muggs or Mr. Lutz leading the group in his favorite cheer, Aka Laka Ching. No one can do it quite so well 'as Mr. Lutz. Thank you, Mr. Lutz, for the kindness, consideration, and patience you have shown us. G.H.S. would not he what it is today without your guidance and help CLASS or '47 4 THE CRCWD ABGVE lll'0 Olll' Seni or Ofzfem XVILLIAM COX President ROBERT ORMSBY VicefPresident ANNA YAVORSKY Secretary ANNE HORCHER Treasurer THE PRESIDENTS MESSAGE As the sculptor fashions his bit of clay into a finished piece of work, he lays it aside, content that he has put his best into it. So we, the members of the graduating class of '47, likened unto a piece of clay, have been molded and fashioned to com- pletion by the hands of the sculptors-e-our teachers, who have given each a part of himself, toward our completion. We are going out into a world of chaotic disagreements and misunderstandings and feel that the wisdom and learning, gleaned from our stay and associations in these U.H.S. Halls of Learning, has equipped us to meet the buffering of this world. The memories we shall retain from the comradeship of our fellow students, the loyalty to our Alma Mater instilled in us by our athletes in the various fields of competition, and the many pleasures we have enjoyed through the efforts of the various G.l'I.S. organizations shall be a source of gratitude to us through the coming years. The successful completion of our class functions could not have been attained but for the wisdom and untiring efforts of our class sponsors, and the members of the faculty, and the cooperation of the entire student body. Now we are about to take leave of our Alma Mater. To those who have done so much for us we say, not Farewell, for that seems so hnal, but-Au Revoir and Good Luck. W1LL1.AM F. WRlc:HT Supervising Principal Un this day of your commencement-he more concerned with the marks on your character than with the marks on your report card. The Master Teacher is the still, small voice within you. Though you are leaving school and other teachers, you are not leaving Him. He will never leave you. That is why you need not regret that you have not learned enough in high school or that you can' not go to college. That is why you need not fear the University of Life, in which you are commencing. That Teacher whom you are not leaving tonight. or ever leaving, knows ALL the answers and will give them ALI.. to you gladly, free of charge, just for the asking. Life is as simple as that. Leox C. Llrrz Principal The world is placing its future hopes in you to do much hetter than the generation preceding you. Yours is the heritage of hringing order out of extreme social and economic chaos to insure the posf sihility of the survival of the race. I am most hopeful for the future hecause I he- lieve that you, the new generation with your ideas and the courage to face facts fearlessly and honestly, will find real solutions which are hased upon the principles underlying a democracy. Practice con- tentment, optimism, and keep the glow of good things in your heart and when you need a friend, COIIIL' to see me. May I wish the class of I947 great success in all its undertakings and may the memhers always look hack upon their stay in lllasshoro High School with pleasure. MiLToN W. We had our first class meeting and elected our officers-President, Clifford Kollmeierg Vice' President, Paul Munafog Secretary and Treasurer, Gladys Engelbrecht. That year we had a freshman assembly, using all the talent of the class. How proud we were when our assembly was chosen the best of all the classes! Our sophomore year we felt a little more confident, and what fun it was to watch the freshmen and wonder if we were ever like that. By this time class meetings were old stuff, and we thought we conducted ours with great success. This year we elected Robert Owens as our President, Paul Munafo, VicefPresidentg Anne Horcher, Secretary, and Louis Fry, Treasurer. This year we had a sophomore hop. Everyone, we especiaily, thought that this was a great success, with an orchestra and all the trimmings. When we finally became juniors fupper classmenj, we didn't even bother with the freshmen. Our officers this year were William Cox, Presidentg Robert Ormsby, VicefPresidentg Mildred Alacqua, Secretaryg and Anne Horcher, Treasurer. This year we worked like mad trying to get money for the prom, which we hoped would be the biggest and best ever had. We think it was! We finally reached our senior year, so different from the freshmen who had entered three years before. This year our officers were William Cox, President, 'Robert Ormsby, Vice' Presidentg Anna Yavorsky, Secretaryg and Anne Horcher, Treasurer. This year it was our privilege to plan Mr. Lutz's birthday party. Our class grew in number' by about ten this year, because so many veterans returned. --5979 We got our yearbook staff working soon after school started and we were also busy planning for Class Day, and our Senior Dance. Commencement has come at last and we, the Class of 1947, are about to leave G.H.S., remembering all the fun and joys we have had in the past. ORLEAN RYNHART AND JULIA GINGRICH 12 CIM oem As we boarded our ship the very frst day, We were stunned with awe and glee, But the joyous times encountered there Will always a memory be. Our skipper, the best to be found in the land, And our officers young and gay, With their understanding guidance Helped us all in every way. The plays, the proms, the football games, All helped in shaping our voyage, And can never be forgotten By us senior girls and boys. The classes, few dull or boring, Were helpful, fun and gay, And the ringing of the three o'clock bell Tolled the end of a perfect KU day. But now it's time to cast anchor, And steadfast friends must severg Our school days are past and will ne'er return, But all will be shiprnates forever. PETTICCDAT FEVER Un Wednesday and Thursday, April 16 and 17, the Senior Play, Petticoat Fever, was pref sented. The play was billed as a Non-Tropical Farce. The following students were in the cast and did an excellent job in presenting the play: David Richards, veteran of two previous senior plays, had the leading role of the wireless opera' tor. Elsie Martinson played the girl and Bill Souder was her inconvenient fiance. The part of the operator's jealous and bossy Hancee was played by Betty jean Kengle. Harvey Sampson was the ceremonyfcrazed glacier priest. Robert Chaiiin was a rugged sea captain and Clayton Platt was an Eskimo cook. The plot concerned the trials and tribulations of a government wireless operator at a lonely station on the coast of Labrador. He was naturf ally terribly bored with the situation and his own loneliness and had just been estimating that it had been two years since he had seen a woman when, without any warning, the door flies open, and in walked a gorgeous blonde! Although the girl had a crusty and suspicious fiance with her, that fact did not dampen the operators ardor. He went about the business of making her stay as pleasant and as long as possible. Into this situation came the operators own longfforgotten fiancee. The operators newlyfarrived fiancee had a managing instinct and with the aid of the marryingfminded parson immediately endeavored to arrange everything to suit her own liking. The operator foiled her schemes and secured the girl of his choice Brushing off excess fiancees of both sexes as well as marriagefmad ministers made excellent enter' tainment within the Arctic Circle, in the glow of the aurora borealis fcourtesy of Mr. Baylis and his assistantsj. The production was of the same high caliber that has characterized the school's previous dramatic work and everyone was very satisfied with the presentation. UNIGRS Oi-i-lviks Prcxxmlmit , . THE HUB Lorene Ret Florence Bischoff The Hub is the school paper published monthly during the school year by the students of Glassboro High School. The members meet once a week during the club period. Anyone in the school may participate. The members this year decided to have pins with Hub in- scribed on them. The club is divided into two parts, the busi- ness staff and the literary staff. The business staff manages the financing of the paper. They sell advertisements to defray some of the ex' pense of printing the paper. Mr. Wagiier sponsors the business staff of the paper. The members of the literary staff of the club write the news and feature assignments. Assign' ments are given during club meetings and mem' hers are encouraged to submit original features. Members gave constructive talks on photographic art during the club meetings, As a laboratory project, the group took a trip through the Krouse Studio in Pitman. The Dancing Club, sponsored by Mrs, lsenberg and Mrs. Martin, was organized for the purpose of teaching freshmen to dance. Several interested stu' dents also gave their time to assist the club members during the club period. If they had won the Paulsboro game instead of tying it, they would have won the bifcounty championship. Some of the most spec' tacular games of the season were the Millville, Pleasantville, and Woodbury games. They beat Woodbury this year for the second time in twentyffive years. In the Pleasantville game they came from behind to score in the dying minutes of the game and win by a very close score. During the Millville game we saw some spec' tacular defensive line play which will long be remembered around Glassboro High. They were a team that was very unpredictable, because nobody could guess how a game would end. Some games which they were rated to win they lost. Games they were supposed to lose, they won. Berny Minor sparked the backfield, while Bill Cox, Berny Chatman, and Paul Thomas were great players on the line. ' This year we had a new coach at G.H.S. Coach Len Morton is liked by everyone, especif ally the players. Next year Morton hopes to have a championship team, but he has said he will never have a team with a more undying spirit and fighting heart than the group of boys that represented G.H.S. on the gridiron this season. This year we had a new coach, Mrs. Isabel Martin. The team was eaptained hy Marion Dean, who played the center position. Playing with her on the forward line were Shirley Miller and Mairgie Baranowski as left and right inners. Nancy Boyd and Joan Drayton played the left and right wing positions. Our hard-hitting cen- ter halfhack was Dolores Ellis. Leora Rishel and Grace Hughes handled the other two halfhaek positions. The fullhacks were Lois Walttnii and Floretta Chafiin. Last, hut not least, our goalie was Barhara Camphell. We feel sure that the future varsity team will he a hardffighting, hardfhitting, and vie' torious team. By using speed and able passf work, the team overcame their disadvantage of lack of height. Paced by Sam Saia, who scored 186 points, the team rolled up a total of 798 points during the season. Bill Carey was second in the scoring with 180 points. The team at' tributed their victories to the constant training and encouragement of Coach Warren Grodotzke. Three times during the season the team equaled or broke records set by previous G.H.S. teams. They won over Wildwood twice, duplif cating last year's accomplishment. Next, they scored 78 points in the Pleasantville game, 68 in the Gloucester Catholic game, and 67 in the Gloucester game. The previous record for a one' game score was 65 points. With Saia and Carey on the Hrst string were Minor with his ability in retrieving the ball, Lingerfield, who was particularly effective at coming through in tight spots, and Quinlan, who capably assisted Minor. On the second string were Todaro and Adams, forwardsg Brusco, center, DePasquale, Rawlings, Aliberti, and Groff, guards. Eight of this year's varsity will graduate- Sam Saia, Burnard Minor, Tink Lingerheld, Bill Carey, Al Quinlan, Jack Adams, Anthony Brusco, and Charlie Rawlings. In a March of Dimes beneht game, the girls played four exciting quarters versus the alumni, defeating them 3864. jean Redmond was high scorer for this game scoring twentyfseven points. However, the other two forwards deserve much credit for making the plays possible. The guards with their able footwork and high jumping recovered the ball from their opponents many times and passed it to their forwards. The varsity members are jean Redmond, Mary Giunta, and Annamae Hurtt as forwards: Cap tain jean De Moine, Dolores Ellis, and Mildred Duncan as guards. The subfvarsity members are Marion Dean, Marge Bennett, Nancy Boyd, Eleanor Hise, and Jean Bailleul. Amy johnson. Captain Dolores Temponi, Lois Walttiri, Mar' jorie- Wilsriii, Mary Barcum, joan Drayton, Grace Hughes, Barbara Campbell, Dolores Cake, Palma Henderson make up the j.V. squad. Although the girls displayed good sportsman- ship and Hghting spirit, the league season was not successful from the point of view of victories. Five of the varsity members will be graduated this year, but we know that the sub-varsity and J.V. teams are capable of having a successful season next year for G.H.S. This has been proved in their past games and we're wishing them a high record in the future. G. H. S.
