C. Glass soon become familiar with the friendly nod from Miss Nelson as she meets us in the hall or as she walks into the classroom. It doesn’t take us long to learn that she expects from us a return of her bright greeting. As we look back over the past four years, we remember her thoroughness: daily drills in grammar, spelling, and sentence structure; but her wit and sense of humor make even our hardest lessons lots of fun. We are grateful for the richer understanding of fine literature, especially Shakespeare, she has given us. With deep appreciation we dedi- cate the 1950 Crest to Miss Helen Nelson, our teacher and friend. OP RR IRS tg senses DRIEST O RR ET NES: Foreword Stories, themes, essays, reports — under whatever name compositions masquerade — are a weekly part of every student’s life at E. C. Glass. During our four years in high school we have written some seventy-five. Some have been fun to write; others have been a task; all have been written as an assignment from some English teacher and all have gone under her red pencil. Now we write our final composition, our annual — the complete story of one of the most memorable years of our lives. We hand it to you, hopefully, as we have handed so many to our teachers in the past. It requires no grading. Seated Mr. Mr Mr Mr Dr. Mr School Board from left to right: B. E. Istry, Clerk .W.S. His personal interest in us—as evidenced by his calling most of us by first names— has won the friendship of every student. Graduated from the University of Virginia in 1923, Mr. McCue took his M. A. Degree at the University of Michigan in 1931. He came to E. C. Glass in 1923 as a biology teacher and advanced rapidly—Faculty Manager of Athletics, Head of the Science Department, and Assistant Principal—to the principalship in 1944. To govern us in our last year we elected Harold Hubbard, President; Bob Bailey, Vice-Presi- dent; Laura Sprinkle, Secretary; and Fred Thomas, Treasurer. With the help of Miss Eloise Brown, Adviser, the Senior Officers and the Senior Council planned our activities for the year. Senior Day, the annual event so eagerly anticipated by all seniors, was the big event of the year. In the special assembly, Bob Bailey and Eleanor Johnson were crowned King and Queen, respec- tively, to reign over the celebration. They headed the parade composed of all seniors through town that afternoon. A football game climaxed the day's program. An Irish Jig, held on Saint Patrick’s Day was given by the Senior Class as its annual dance. Highlighted by a floor show given by two dancing partners, the dance was a big success. The ef- forts of the committee in charge were well rewarded. “Dear Ruth’ was the annual theatrical production staged by the Senior Class. In addition to the all senior cast, all committees who helped in the production were composed entirely of seniors. Instituted as a new feature at Glass this year was a formal Ring Dance, given by the Junior Class, at which the seniors presented 1951 class rings to the juniors. Some outstanding seniors in the class of 1950 have brought honor to themselves and their school in the last year. Betty Ellington holds the highest scholastic record among the seniors at E. C. Glass High School. Betty Oakes, representing the Lynchburg Distributive Education Club, took first honors in the District and State Better Speaking Contest. Betty Crews was named the outstanding senior elected to the National Honor Society. Two talented seniors were important members of the cast of “The Flattering Word,’ a David Garrick production that won first rating in the District and distinguished rating in the State Play Festival. We shall never forget Bob Rush as the perfect wearer of the frock and Jessie Burks as the young teen-ager with the supposed- ly dramatic talent. Virginia Firkin brought a particularly distinguished honor to herself and her school by being elected to the highest office, that of the Governorship, of Girls’ State at its annual statewide convention, held this year at V. P. I. Athletics comprised a major part of this year’s activities. A number of seniors played prominent parts in every sport—football, basketball, track and tennis. Harold Hubbard, president of our class, was captain of our football team and Gene Hines was co-captain of the track team. Vernon Hower- ton, one of our best besketball players, won the WWOD cup for making the highest percentage of foul shots. Cheerleading has always held a big spot in the limelight at Glass High. The Senior Class was well represented by Virginia Firkin, head cheerleader; Betty Crews, Eleanor Johnson, and Joyce Tolley, head cheerleader for the Junior Varsity. The highest honor a senior can receive is that of being chosen for membership into the Na- tional Honor Society. Sixteen seniors were selected on the basis of character, scholarship, leader- ship and service for this honor. Though our paths will divide as we go out, cach to carry out his purpose in life, we shall always recall with pride and pleasure fond memories of days spent with our classmates at E. C. The screeching of many skates started the Juveniles on to a joyous whirl. A masquerade followed on October 15, with Li'l Abner Ebert and Mousey Firkins walking off with the honors. A series of jiving lessons made the Juveniles expert shag packers for the Shag Pack the next month. A change was in order so they headed for Devil’s Marble Yard and a different kind of diversion—a hay ride-picnic combination. Entirely original with the Juveniles and new to E. C. Glass was the Sock Hop when Terrell Smith and Shirley Harvey were given rewards for the most outlandish socks. The climax perhaps of this memorable year of activity was a joint Ring Dance with the seniors at Boonsboro Country Club. At the same time that they have “socialized,” the juniors have played an out- standing role in the scholastic life of the school. Norman Harris and Mary Wilson Burnett represented E. C. Glass in public speaking and Fred Cyrus, in spelling in the Virgima Literary and Athletic League Contest. Two of the five actors in the play contest—a first place district winner—were juniors: Arlyn Firkins and Ran- dolph Ragland. Co-editors of the “Critic,” that captured the highest possible rating in the Columbia Press Association, are Sarah Kuniansky and Bill Keeton. Back row: Mr. Bryan, P. Unger, J. Huffman, R. C. Glass High School guided by Mr. V. D. Beckner. They have had two bowling parties, one on the eighth of February and the other on the second of March, at which many wore their newly chosen class colors of red and white. Skat- ing parties, a picnic, and a dance have rounded out a successful social season. These sophomeres have entered also into many extra-curricular activities and taken a great part in sports, both basketball and football ; in the David Garricks; Art League; and the chorus and c..o1r, just to mention a few. On the scholastic side homeroom 319 has had the highest percentage on the honor roll. Leaders in the attendance record were homerooms 203 and 319. Enuly Pauly, from Belgium, joined our ranks this year. We are slowly learn- ing some French and he is quickly learning much English. dD WN ‘oO Back row: E. Thomas, H. Thompson, G. Collins, E. Loresighted Freshmen six: Out of the three hundred and sixty-three freshmen in high school, two hundred and nine started in the fall. One hundred and thirty-one pupils are taking the academic course, a hundred and thirty-eight, the commercial and ninety-four, general. A large percentage of these freshmen have made the honor roll consistently since their entrance in the fall. Many of them have been able to keep up the high scholastic standing necessary for the honor roll and to take part in extra-curricular activities at the same time, On the roll of the band, orchestra, choir, Y-Teens and H-Y is a generous sprinkling of freshmen names. There is also a goodly representation of freshmen in the David Garrick Club, on the football and basketball teams, and on the Library Council. The freshmen homerooms are 101, 112, 119, 201, 212, and 306. Their sponsor is Mrs. Howard Whitehead. — Ww WN Oo Back row: B. Hanel, J. Campbell, K. Padgett, J. Harman, L. Torrence, B. Peters, R. C. Glass High School foo tball team. Under the able direction of Head Coach Vince Bradford, Line Coach Bob Taylor, and Backfield Coach Jimmie Bryan, the Hilltoppers came up with one of the powers of the Group One Conference and came within four points of annexing the State Championship. The Hilltoppers, led by Co-Captains Harold Hubbard and Johnny Palmer, ran up a total of eight straight wins before losing a thrilling battle to the Hampton High Crabbers by a score of 19-21 for their only loss of the year. The only other mar on the Hilltoppers’ record could hardly be called a mar because that was the 14-14 stalemate played with a top heavy Roanoke team. Jimmy Wade, one of the most promising backs in Glass High history, climaxed a brilliant season by being selected to the All-American High School squad. In addition to this honor, Wade was selected to the All-State team along with Palmer, Hubbard, and Bill Cox. Owen “Skeeter” Maddox and Bobby Tucker made honorable mention on the All-State squad. C. Glass Basketeers came out with the best scholastic team in the State. Jumping off to a fast start, the Hilltoppers ran over Lexington, Hampden- Sydney J. V.’s, South Boston, Salem, Randolph-Macon J. V.’s, Danville, Hampden- Sydney J. V.’s, and Hargrave to run their two-year victory streak to thirty straight. This is a new Group I record. In their ninth game of the season the Hilltoppers met their Waterloo at the hands of Lacy and company from Jefferson High of Roanoke by a score of 40-27. Having the worst night in years, the Hilltoppers could only hit for one field goal in the first half and an inspired Jefferson team never let them catch up. The Hilltoppers came back strong and defeated Alexandria twice, Hargrave, Winchester, Salem, Danville, and High Point, N. C. twice. On February 24, the Hilltoppers took on Roanoke before approximately 2,500 people at the City Armory, and came out on the big end of a 57-55 score after the game had been sent into an overtime period on-a foul shot by Franklin and a field goal by Palmer in_ the last three seconds of the regular time. This victory gave Glass a tie for conference honors and made a play-off game necessary. In the play-off at V. M. I. before a record-breaking crowd the Hill- toppers again trailed for three quarters, but came out on top by a score of 51-49. In between the two Roanoke games Glass defeated Portsmouth, Eastern District runner-ups, and Thomas Jefferson of Richmond, Central District Champions, to give them a season record of 21 victories and one defeat and a two year record of 42-1. In the Group I Championship Tournament at Norfolk Glass lost a heart- breaker to Granby, who went on to win the State title by a score of 43-36. In this game the top-seeded Hilltoppers just couldn’t do anything right against last-seeded Granby, who had gained considerable strength since their conference play by the addition of a 6 foot, 9 inch center. Johnny Palmer led the Hilltop scoring with a total of 276 points closely fol- lowed by Captain Otto Franklin with 267. Vernon Howerton won the WWOD foul-shot trophy for the best percentage during the regular season play with a percentage of .692. Vernon made 18-26 shots. Palmer took second with 36-53 and a .678 percent and Franklin was third with 57-88 and a .647 per cent. Captain Franklin and Palmer, along with Weaver and Lacy of Roanoke and Bolton of Danville, made first string All-Western for their second straight year.
