Glass football team opened its 1948 season, Friday, September 18, by trimming the highly touted Hargrave Military Academy eleven 39-O. For the Hrst time in many years Glass came up with a brilliant passing attack sparked by Lee Wliite and Billy Lea. In the second contest of the year the Gridmen signilied their intentions of gaining prestige in the state by running over Lexington by a score of 34-0. In their first conference outing the Hilltoppers scored a hard fought 19-13 over a strong Newport News club. On their first road trip the Glass High eleven took on Lane of Charlottesville and capitalized on a third period fumble to score the game's only touchdown and to win 6-O. This contest was played in a sea of mud. Billy Lea was injured and did not play in this game. - Returning home, the following week the Hilltoppers broke out in a sparkling array of long runs to defeat Danville 32-0. The Hrst loss of the year was to Maury of Norfolk. For three periods.the Hill City Eleven held the lead, but the Commadores caught lire in the last live minutes to score two t, d.'s and win 13-7. The winning points were scored in the last 30 seconds of the game. In the season's only afternoon game, the Hilltoppers upset the Crimson Waite of Petersburg 14 to 7, for their sixth win of the year. The seventh victory of the year came at the expense ot a stubborn Salem High team. The Hilltoppers took this one by a 7 to 6 tally. A The second Hilltop loss came on Senior.Day' at the hands of Hampton, the State Champions, on a desperation pass. The score of this tilt was also 13 to 7. Blankenship was out of the game because of an injury. Turning the tables on a favored Roanoke eleven to the tune of 20-7, the Hill- top gridders ran wild. The scoring was set off by Linn Pugh's touchdown, when he grabbed a Roanoke pass and raced to paydirt. Other t. d.'s', were set up with interceptions by Lea, Wfade and Berry. Herbert Blankenship was elected All-State guard and Harold Hubbard was selected as All-State blocking back. Milton Maddox received honorable mention. Glass basketball team enjoyed the most successful season in the history of the school. The squad won 22 consecutive games, running over, among these, the previously undefeated Alexandria squad for the State crown. After the annual games with Lexington Q56-l5j and South Boston Q67-42j, the squad traveled to Richmond to play the State champs of last year, John Mar- shall. Here the careful and skillful .leadership of Coach Bryan paid off with a 49-46 trium h. T? he following night the Jeffersonians of Richmond were trampled 44-16. The hrst conference tilt, that with Salem, came next with the VVolverine be- coming victim number five to the tune of 41-19. The Comets of Granby threw a scare into the Hilltoppers, but a last quarter rally, with Big Bill Chambers doing the honors, put the Blue and Wliite on top. The score: Glass 46, Granby 37. Hargrave was humbled Sl-37 with the scrubbs doing much of the night's scorln . Dinville became conference foe number two with a 61-34 licking, Berry and Franklin supplying the punch. Petersburg C61-27j and Charlottesville Q58-l5j became victims number nine and ten with Moe Maddox and John Palmer topping the scorers. The arch rivals, Roanoke, came to town to avenge the football defeat and to stop the Glass streak. But Coach Bryan wanted this one badly and after a solid week's work the ingenius Coach Bryan sent the Magicians home with a 51-16 spank- ing. The Hilltop iirst team of Chambers, Palmer, Franklin, Maddox, and Berry poured on the steam. The next night the soldiers from Hargrave fell again C78-3-lj. Victory number thirteen came hardest with the Comets from Granby fighting right down to the wire and a last minute foul shot by Franklin giving Glass a 36-35 victory. . The following night the Hilltoppers dropped a scrappy, but outclassed, Ports- mouth team to the tune of 36-26. Salem f 77-27 D went into the red for the second straight time in the hands of the hoop-happy Hilltoppers and the uncanny ability of Coach Jimmy Bryan. WV ith Glass boosting fifteen straight victories in the bag, the justices of Iohn Marshall brought a determined squad of ball players with victory in sight into the Lynchburg Armory. But the 'fpeople's choice, the Glass Mentor, had wanted this one too and the supremacy was proven with the Bltie-Wliite on top, 44-31. Chambers and Berry were the big guns. Danville Q55-335 and Petersburg became victims in quick succession with the Crimson VV ave of Petersburg receiving the worst defeat of the season Q82-30j. The arch rivals, Roanoke, put up a determined iight before falling 45-37 in the season finale. Captain Maddox played the best ball game of his career in this one. Traveling to the Norfolk State Tournament as tournament favorites the Hill- toppers started off sluggishly with a 48-30 victory over Arlington. In the second game the Glass squad trounced Newport News 54-29, but the loss of Berry, set-shot artistand dynamic play maker, because of a broken foot, gave a severe jolt to the chances against Alexandria in the finals. 1 The finals matched the only two undefeated teams in the State. Alexandria with the six-foot-plus-squad racked five points up before the Hilltoppers started roll- ing. But Coach Bryan's Well-planned attack came through with a 42-34 victory, and the Hilltoppers emerged undefeated Group I State Champions, ending the best basketball season of the school's history.
