Points after touchdowns: 2 by Blankenship. October 4—Hilltoppers upset Newport News 21-14. Team led by Akers and Creasy. Joe Moore, Tucker, and Akers made touchdowns, while Blankenship converted for 3 points. October 10—Glass vs. Lane. Glass defeats 27- 7 before 2,000 drip- ping fans on the muddiest field of the season. October 17—Danville upsets Glass 6-0. White scored for George Washington. Shorter Harvey was injured and carried to the hospital. Witt, Crews, and Noblett showed up well in the line. October 24—Maury defeats Hilltoppers 6-0. Lynchburgers checked two times at goal line. Berry and Creasy starred. Glass got 8 first downs to Maury’s 3. Probably best played game of season for Hilltoppers. November 1—Petersburg blasts Glass 21-0. Glass was weakened by the loss of Akers. In third quarter Haulbert took Lea’s kick and ran 80 yds. to a touchdown. Moore and Hodges stood out in the line. November 7—With Ralph Elliot leading the attack, Glass over- powered Salem 19-0 to break Senior Day losing jinx. Scoring touchdowns: Elliot and Berry. November 14—Hilltoppers outplay Hampton; lose 6-0. Glass got 14 first downs to Hampton’s 6. Outstanding feature of game was Glass’ forward wall. Game highlighted by pass receiving of Joe Moore. November 21—Glass vs. Roanoke. Roanoke tramples Glass 35-0 in last game of season. Joe Moore and Clyde Witt made All-State. Hilltoppers were never in danger but their shooting was inaccurate. Ross and Maddox were the sparkplugs of the team. December- 26-27—-In the opening round of the tournament, Glass defeated Charlottesville 60-25 with Woodford and Ross high scorers. In the semi-final round, beat Salem, 27-22 to ad- vance to the finals. In final game, Glass lost to Roanoke 30-29. Ross and Woodford were chosen to the All-Tournament team. January 3—Glass downs South Boston, 55-25 with O. Franklin high scorer with 12 points and Maddox second with 10 points. January 9—In a thrilling game, Glass beat the previously undefeated Hampden-Sydney J. V. team 35-33. Franklin led all scorers with 10 points. January 16—A great performance by Captain Reese Ross gave Glass a 41-33 triumph over Salem High School. Maddox also starred. January 17—Glass plays in Petersburg and is defeated. This wasn’t a conference game. January 23—Glass loses its first conference game by 37-35. Glass jumped to a early 10 point lead in second quarter. Danville came back strong and brought the lead down to 2 points. January 29-——Glass defeats weak team from Hargrave. Glass got an early lead and was never threatened. January 30—Glass dropped its second conference game to Roanoke by 39-27. January 31—Glass defeated Lane High for second time by 54-24. February 6—Granby defeated Glass in non-conference tilt. February 7—Portsmouth downs Glass. February 10—Glass defeats Charlottesville 54-47. Ross led scorers with 21 points. February 13—-Glass drops 3rd conference game to Salem 36-34. ‘Mo’ Maddox was out- standing player for Glass. February 14—-Glass defeats Hamden-Sydney J. V. 40-26. Overtime was needed to finish the game. Ross and White dropped in the 4 winning points. February 17—Glass loses to Hargrave there. February 20—In one of the most remarkable exhibitions of set-shot marksmanship ever seen at the City Armory by Glass, the Hilltoppers beat Danville 56-36. High scorers were Maddox, Franklin, Ross and Palmer. February 21——Glass took a 42-21 victory over a favored Petersburg Crimson Wave. Tommy Berry proved to be the sparkplug in the Glass team. Maddox was high scorer with Ross and Franklin runners-up. February 27—Glass took a stunning 48-25 victory over Roanoke today. The Hilltoppers ran up 8 points before Roanoke could get the range. Maddox paced the attack with 13 points followed by Franklin with 11. The whole team played fine ball. Glass won play-off berth by winning this game. February 28—-Portsmouth edges out Glass by one point in remaining seconds of g ame to win 42-41, This was last game of season before the tournament. March 5—Glass High upsets highly favored American Legion team 72-52. Maddox starred for Glass with 18 points. With a 12 point lead at the end of the 3rd quarter, the Hilltoppers apparently had their opening round game in the Group I Tournament against Alexandria until Ross, Berry and Palmer fouled out.
