Chosen by the faculty on the basis of scholarship, leadership, character and service, a member takes his pledge not only for his high school career, but for his whole life. He is rewarded both for talent and hard work. Those elected represent fifteen per cent of the graduating class chosen from the upper third. This year ten per cent il! were chosen 4A’s, five per cent being chosen, later, as 4B’s, thus enabling the organization to be more active. Election to this society is an honor coveted by every student. ii Purpose: To create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, . to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of American secondary schools. C. Glass. Today any student who signs a pledge promising cooperation with our constitution is eligible for membership. This year, the Honor League has, in addition to its regular duties, revised its constitution, and presented as speaker to the student body a representative of the F.B.I. Throughout the year, the League has done its utmost to emphasize integrity in all phases of school life. Whereas many such organizations deal with the discouragement of all forms of dishonesty, the League has worked primarily in discouraging dishonesty in regard to work. In so doing, it has been better able to cope with the most prevalent form of dishonesty in our school. Ideas and suggestions for the improvement of our school are acted upon at the meetings of the Council every Thursday. One of the most successful undertakings of the Student Council this year was a Victory Bond Drive in which E. C. Glass emerged first in a state-wide campaign. The Student Council officers, outstanding bond salesmen, and faculty advisers presented the total of $52,000 in the form of Hospital units to wounded veterans in a ceremony held at the McGuire General Hospital in Richmond. Glass chapter of Quill and Scroll, the international honorary society for high school journalists, was organized in the spring of 1928 to encourage and reward individual achievement in journalism and allied fields. Members of Quill and Scroll must be chosen from the students enrolled in the high school who at the time of their election meet the following requirements: (1) They must be of at least junior standing. (2) They must be in the upper third of their class in general scholastic standing at the time of their election. (3) They must have done superior work in some phase of journalism or creative endeavor. (4) They must be recommended by the adviser of the publication. (5) They must be approved by the national executive secretary. The purpose of Quill and Scroll is to instill in students the ideal of scholarship; to advance the standards of journalism by developing better journalists and by teaching a higher code of ethics; to promote exact and impartial thinking, clear and forceful writing. The atomic bomb, with its new elements, the modern methods of making cotton cloth, and the new drugs have been sources of some of our programs. Dr. Garretson, a member of the chemistry department of Lynchburg College, gave the club a very instructive lecture on Silicone as a lubricant. Mr. John Simpson made one program a great joy by his talk and pictures of “Under Water Photography.” Other programs of the club have included field trips, moving pictures, quiz programs, and a birthday party with students representing scientists from Priestley to Lisa Meitner. The membership of the Chemistry Club includes three classes of students; those who have completed chemistry, 3B’s now taking chemistry, and 3A’s who are making an average of 85 on their work. As many as ten films, covering varied fields of instruction, have been screened in a single week. i A system of apprenticeship was developed to provide a corps of operators. i Emphasis was also placed on care of the equipment as a means of assuring its continued good performance. John Denny and Kenneth Roach kept the equipment in good working order. i Films were secured from about a dozen sources, including the city library in John Wyatt School. While no particular subjects were favored, a special effort was made to provide the Physical Education Classes with films on sports, Athletics, Health, and Related Subjects as a part of their weekly schedule. iM OFFICERS Pr Ost OM b.cs acsnisev ete ta leds ot ted ane poeado Soe Ope een ecto greene se ene JoHN CARTER V4 CO-PPF Std CUTE opoantcerdnatecnadveecac tent inole cat earvipnresa ten. hayacaa KENNETH ROACH . Che Vis ted Choir The Vested Choir is an outgrowth of the A Capella choir which was organized by Mr. Lewis Bierly in 1937. The organization is composed of approximately fifty high school boys and girls. The Director decides by voice tests who shall belong to the choir. Students having two years active work in the choir receive a choir pin in recognition of their fine service and appreciation of good music. It is the purpose of this organization to enlighten the musical soul of the school as well as the communty. This aim was truly expressed by the choir in their performance at the Spring Concert. It is our hope that the choir will always serve the best interest of our school by performing whenever they are called upon. The Directors for the choir this year have been, Mrs. Bair, Miss Howell, and Mr. W. T. Nicholas, recently discharged from the U. S. Navy. First Row: B. Daniel, B. Toler, A. Walkup, D. Bremer, F. Che Girls’ Glee Cub The Girls’ Glee Club, composed of about one hundred members, has spent its time this year in the study of folk songs, popular songs, and those of a classical nature. The club presented a program of Thanksgiving music in assembly of November the twenty-first which was very appropriate to the season. One part of our program which gave much pleasure to others as well as to us was an evening spent in caroling. In the spring we entered the Annual High School Music Festival in which we competed with other music departments from the state. The Girls’ Glee Club closed its season by participating in the Spring Concert, a function in which the whole school has a genuine interest. Eves Row.) |. Jamerson; B. Bell, P. Ayers, O5 Parrish, D. This year the Orchestra took part in the District Competition Festivals, and the All State Orchestra, to which four of our members have been elected. Here at school we have furnished the needed music for the plays presented by the David Garrick Players and the Senior Class. Of course our Orchestra's part in the Music Department’s Annual Spring Concert was the same high quality we have maintained in the past year. This competition was discontinued during the war, but it is again playing a very large part in music throughout the state. Crade and Industrial School This year the Trade and Industrial school has broadened the curriculum and increased the faculty from two to five. These changes have been the results of the return of the G. I.’s. Classes and shop work are offered in Electricity, Radio, Machines and Drafting. There is an enrollment of 152, ninety-two boys from E. C. Glass High School and sixty veterans from the city not enrolled in high school. The veterans are practically all enrolled in classes in electricity and radio. Having completed the crusade of exterminating the tyrannical and aggressive nations we again become students endeavoring to equip ourselves with the tools so necessary for success in life. Many times we have seen the disadvantages of an unfinished education. Now that we have put away our rifles and drawn books at E. C. Glass High School, we are impressed by the feeling that exists between the veteran and his associates. The teachers are willing to be of help in all of our studies. At first we thought we would be out of place among the younger students but since we have returned, we have found real friendship and understanding. Walkup, J. Powell, P. Ramsey, O. Meriwether Football Although we had been practicing since the first of September, when the time came for the opening game with Clifton Forge we were only half confident of our ability. In this Clifton Forge game however, our powerful line, making a spectacular debut, accounted directly for all four touchdowns, and broke through repeatedly to block the Mountaineer runners. Co-Captain Meriwether scored twice during the game on end around runs of eight and ten yards. Marvin Torrence, a reserve guard, pounced on a fumble in the end zone just before the half. Co-Cap- tain Bailey blocked a punt and tumbled on the pigskin in the end zone for the fourth and last score. The four extra points were scored by Lee White and Brooks. Having won the first game, the confident Hilltoppers steam-rolled over a hapless Hargrave Military Academy eleven. The game was climaxed by a sixty-four yard gallop by Lee White. Other touchdowns were made by Meriwether, Governor and Blankenship. Blankenship scored the only extra point of the game. Under the lights at Newport News, the Hilltoppers suffered their first defeat of the season to a powerful and running Tidewater eleven. A long trip coupled with a lack of punch and spirit contributed to the loss of our first conference game. Smarting from the defeat of the previous week, and determined to keep their home record clean, Glass High defeated Lane High of Charlottesville by one touchdown. This was the only game that Lane did not win during their entire | | | j season. Touchdowns in the first half were scored by Johnson and McLane. In the remainder of the game Lane High was able to score only once on a pass. Our line continued to do its part and proved worthy of pre-season acclaim. In the tangle with Danville the team appeared, for the first time of the season, as a real football machine. Johnson and Almond were the spark plugs with Almond gaining the first goal and Johnson tossing a pass to Meriwether, who scored the other touchdown of the game. The big line’s playing bang up ball for the full time along with our backs and hard running made this the best game of the season. Three times during the first half of our game with Maury High School of Norfolk the spectators witnessed the blue and white team within the five-yard mark, but at the end of the first half the Senior Day game stood 0-0. After watching the seniors perform their traditional “Snake Dance” at the halftime, the fans observed a fast and peppy Maury team that pushed over a touchdown late in the third quarter. Not to be outdone the Glass High eleven came back to score on a pass play from Pugh to Ramsey. The crowd cheered wildly when the score was tied, but on the play following the kick-off with only seconds left to play it held its breath as Maury fired a long pass to win the game 12-6. The game with Farmville was a field day for Coach Bradford’s boys. The second and third stringers were able to play a good part of this game; therefore, they gained valuable experience. When the final whistle blew the happy Hilltoppers retired to their locker room with a 53-12 victory behind them. In the game against the Salem Wolverines, the Glass team after scoring twelve points seemed to settle their intent on keeping Salem from scoring as many points. Johnson of Glass and Bunting of Salem were the stars of the game. Meriwether’s spectacular sixty-yard end around touchdown play was the highlight of the tangle with Crewe. The other scores came on line plunges by Munro and McLane. R. S. White led the Hilltoppers’ ground gains in this game and set up both touchdowns on his long double reverse runs. The fine running of Crewe’s veteran back, Johnny Wilson, kept the railroad town eleven in the game. The Roanoke game was the game we had been waiting for all season. This was the one game we wanted to win more than any other, and we went out on the field with the confidence and determination to emerge the victors. Glass scored early in the game when Meriwether picked up Johnson’s fumble and scampered over from the five yard line. Before the half ended we threatened to score repeatedly, and at the same time, held the Magicians scoreless. When the whistle for the beginning of the second half blew, the Bradfordmen began pounding the Magicians again, and finally Almond hammering over from the two yard line. Later in the fourth quarter, McLane scored a six pointer to end our final drive. None of the conversions were good. Throughout the entire game the Blue and White’s fighting line kept the Roanoke running attack bottled up. This longed for victory made us the happiest team in the world. It was a bleak December day down at Hampton as the substitute-laden Hill- toppers lined up for the kick-off in their last game of the season. Campbell, Bailey, and McWane were out of the lineup because of illnesses, thus, the team was weakened considerably. However, on the kick off the Blue and Whites started the game with a bang and drove straight down the field for a touchdown with Almond bullying his way over. Then the tide changed and Hampton took advantage of a pass interception and a long pass to score twice in the first half. In the second half along with Thomas’ southpaw passes the powerful running offense of the “Crabbers” proved too much for the Hilltoppers and the Tidewater team scored twice in each of the remaining two periods. We seemed to end the season in a bad way, but we still remembered our 18-0 victory over our arch-rivals—Roanoke. R. WHITE, Back F. McLANE, Back O. MERIWETHER, End hae - oe H. McWANE, Tackle C. Basketball When our High School started its basketball season, the outlook was dark as there were only three lettermen from last year: Captain-elect Otey Meriwether, Lee White, and Harold Brooks. With only two week’s practice our team met High Point, N. C. High School on their home court in a charity game. We were handi- capped by the previous injuries of Meriwether and Brooks; their replacements were Richards and Wood. In the first half of the game we were outplayed, which was shown by High Point’s 22 to our 10. In the second half we outplayed the opposing team, yet this w as not enough to bring us the victory. The final score was 42-35. In this game Lee White scored 15 points. Our next opponent was Ferrum Junior College, which we defeated 65-13. Captain Meriwether was high scorer with 24 points. The following week we played Alexandria at Waynesboro in the Du Pont Invitational Tournament. Brooks was still unable to play. Alexandria’s All-State Center, Hensley, was a thorn to our team and the half ended 22-14 in their favor. In the third quarter we held them scoreless, but we could not do the same in the fourth. The game ended with Alexandria’s winning 29-26. Meriwether was again high scorer in this game. The next two games we won, defeated Staunton 39-19, and then Hampden- Sydney Junior Varsity 40-29, with Meriwether and Lee White leading in scoring. January 11th, with all of our team in the game and in high spirits, we met Petersburg in one of the roughest games ever witnessed there. W ith teamwork and aggressiveness we won 37-27. The following night we played Thomas Jefferson of Richmond and lost 36-29. Our next game was with Hampden-Sydney Junior Varsity which we defeated this time 51-29, On:January the 13th we had our first conference victory, we defeated Salem 43-30. Our next conference game was with our arch riv al: Roanoke, on their court, we lost 57-41. From the defeat with Roanoke we turned to a scoring spree. By accurate shooting and fighting all the way through the game we defe ated Hargrave 62-33. This same week-end we defeated Danville, another Western district contender 41-37. All the players fought hard in this Danville game and it was timely scoring by Meee Brooks, ‘and L. White which brought the fighting Hilltoppers out ahead. Glass High defeated Staunton by a score of 46-20. This was followed by two more successful games; the Hilltoppers defeated Salem 48-39 and they defeated Hargrave 64-28. Probably the most thrilling game ever played in Lynch- burg was February 16, when we met Thomas Jefferson of Richmond. The game was nip and tuck until the last five seconds when Jack Campbell’s field goal gave us the victory. Another Danville game followed. We were defeated 33-27 despite the fine playing of our team. We met Petersburg next. In this game Petersburg team. kept a seven point lead the greater part of the game, but in the last four minutes the scoring chenged and we were the victors 34-32. The closing of our basketball season was glorious. We defeated Roanoke, our friendly enemies, 37-35. | | | | he iJ Crack Coach Bradford began this year’s track season with approximately half of his men wearing letters from the previous season. The Blue and White Harriers began the season with a 75-47 victory over Lane High of Charlottesville. In this meet, Jack Campbell, the Hilltopper’s shot-putter and co-captain, broke the stadium record for the shot-put, and Pete White, our star hurdler, broke the stadium record for the 120-yard high hurdle course which he ran in 16.7 sec. Otey Meri- wether won individual honors for the meet. The second meet was a real test for the Cindermen’s ability as they were matched against the T. J. team of Richmond that had not been defeated in five years. However, the Hilltoppers, with their well-balanced team, outclassed the favored Tee Jaymen with a 70-52 victory. There was a marked improvement in the interval between the first and second meet and if the team continues to advance as it has thus far, we shall boast a championship team. From 1937 to 1942 we boasted a team under Mr. Marshall Smith which ranked well in state competition. Tennis has gained prominence in the State athletic program in recent years, and E. C. The purpose of this program is to offer a set-up which will include as great a number of girls as possible. This is accomplished through an intramural program which enables all who wish to participate, regardless of ability to excell. By means of this program, good sportsmanship is developed, an oppor: tunity is given for girls to enlarge their circle of friends, and recreation is given for those not interested in other extra curricular activities. During the last few years this has been inactive because of lack of teachers in the physical education department; but since January first when Miss Akers was added to the staff—girls’ activities have been in full swing. Basketball, being the major interest sport and also the most popular, was the first activity to get under way—and it did this with flying colors. Bowling, volley ball, softball and track followed with great enthusiasm. The minor sports consist of badminton, ping-pong, and tennis which are played in the spring, ending with a field day for the track activities. A new innovation was started this year in the form of Modern Dancing. In this activity the creative ability is aroused and participants develop poise and originality—-by expressing their thoughts and feelings into well balanced motion. This after school program of girls’ athletics with its carry over value, its opportunity for recreation, friendship and good sportsmanship, where every girl meets on the same level and where many new friendships are formed, is the largest extra curricular activity in the school.
