Outstanding Events of the School Year 1940-4] SEPTEMBER 4... . Our Senior year started when we all gathered together again today, with many things to look forward to. SEPTEMBER 13 .... Today we chose our Senior Council, a representative group of our class. Elliot Schewel was made its chairman. SEPTEMBER 21... . We got off to a big start today in our first footbali game of the season. We played Clifton Forge and beat them 12-7. The team, headed by “‘Deedy” ; Torrence, seems to be great. We’re expecting a successful season. OcToBEeR 2.... A big day! Our Senior class officers formally took office today in a special assembly, with Mr. J. Heath Lewis, our Senior advisor, officiating. The high- light of the occasion was President Joe Gantt’s inaugural address. Our other officers are Vice-President, Joyce Hornsby; Secretary, Chessie Logwood; Treasurer, Junior Brown. OcToBER 18... . Our day! Senior Day! Everybody in school was most patient today while we Seniors had our “fling.” Blue and white ribbons, chewing gum, suckers, candy, ballcons, topped by a special informal assembly “for Seniors only,” consisting of quizzes, music, and fun. » OctToBER 19.... “There was a big time in the old town today!” Biggest and best part of Senior day—the parade. This year’s was the longest, noisiest, prettiest, most colorful ever. And of course the football game and the snake dance at the half. We trampled Portsmouth 6-0. NoveMBER 16... . Today we journeyed to Roanoke for the last and best football game of the season. We were crushed 13 to 6, but you were great, team. DECEMBER 6... . “Them were the days.’ Who doesn’t like a good oldtime minstrel? The one given tonight was swell, with black-faced comedians, jokes, songs, end-men, and Uncle Sam, adding the patriotic note. The stars were headed by Hamp Burnett, Edgar Roberts, and George Ports. DECEMBER 13 .... A merry time was had by all—the Senior banquet and dance given in the gymnasium. Peggy Brooks headed the banquet committee and everything was a “done up in good style.” The music was furnished by the newly organized Glass High swing band. DECEMBER 20... . Our basketball team made a good start tonight, defeating Lexington in our first game. Keep up the good work, Team. January 27 .. . . School daze—Those ‘things’ are here again—Examinations and then a new (and our last?) term. Aprit 2.... The highest honor a Senior can attain is to be one of the chosen few elected to membership in the National Honor Society. Today 51 of our “shining lights” were selected on the basis of character, scholarship, leadership, and service for this honor. Aprit 4.... The dramatic department has put on many fine performances this year, but the Senior play “The Mummy and the Mumps” tops them all. The illustrious cast of this comedy was made up of Sydnor Thompson, Margaret Dickinson, Helen Wagers, Irene Loftis, Preston Tanner, Jean Landrum, Zack Lindsey, Waiter Singleton, William Ferrell, and Dot Fourqurean. APRIL 23, 24, 25... . This year the music department, under the direction of Mr. Nicholas, has made exceedingly great progress. Besides the minstrel and several musical | assemblies, they have broadcast many times, a thing which ‘is new for them this year. But of course the really great undertaking was the opera. Three great performances were given of ‘“‘Floradora.” It was well received by enthusiastic audiences. A few among its talented cast were Zack Lindsey, Evelyn Morissette, Fay Evans, and Hamp Burnett. May 3.... The track team completed the season today by defeating Thomas Jefferson of Richmond. For the first time since 1936, the team went through the season unde- feated. Congratulations, boys. ; JuNE9....THE DAY! All good things must come to an end. Tonight we saw the largest class in the history of the school.graduate. It was a most beautiful and happy occasion.
