With this idea, we chose for our theme “The School and School Life.” If in the years to come you look through this book and remember yourself as you were, your school as it was, then our labors have not been in vain. With this end in view, we present to you the Crest of 1941. MarGareEt DicKINsON JEAN SPENCER Editor Business Manager CAEP GSS: HIGH SS Oe Oko ei: Page Three Mr. ©. D. Outstanding Events of the School Year 1940-4] SEPTEMBER 4... . Our Senior year started when we all gathered together again today, with many things to look forward to. SEPTEMBER 13 .... Today we chose our Senior Council, a representative group of our class. Elliot Schewel was made its chairman. SEPTEMBER 21... . We got off to a big start today in our first footbali game of the season. We played Clifton Forge and beat them 12-7. The team, headed by “‘Deedy” ; Torrence, seems to be great. We’re expecting a successful season. OcToBEeR 2.... A big day! Our Senior class officers formally took office today in a special assembly, with Mr. J. Heath Lewis, our Senior advisor, officiating. The high- light of the occasion was President Joe Gantt’s inaugural address. Our other officers are Vice-President, Joyce Hornsby; Secretary, Chessie Logwood; Treasurer, Junior Brown. OcToBER 18... . Our day! Senior Day! Everybody in school was most patient today while we Seniors had our “fling.” Blue and white ribbons, chewing gum, suckers, candy, ballcons, topped by a special informal assembly “for Seniors only,” consisting of quizzes, music, and fun. OctToBER 19.... “There was a big time in the old town today!” Biggest and best part of Senior day—the parade. This year’s was the longest, noisiest, prettiest, most colorful ever. And of course the football game and the snake dance at the half. We trampled Portsmouth 6-0. NoveMBER 16... . Today we journeyed to Roanoke for the last and best football game of the season. We were crushed 13 to 6, but you were great, team. DECEMBER 6... . “Them were the days.’ Who doesn’t like a good oldtime minstrel? The one given tonight was swell, with black-faced comedians, jokes, songs, end-men, and Uncle Sam, adding the patriotic note. The stars were headed by Hamp Burnett, Edgar Roberts, and George Ports. DECEMBER 13 .... A merry time was had by all—the Senior banquet and dance given in the gymnasium. Peggy Brooks headed the banquet committee and everything was a “done up in good style.” The music was furnished by the newly organized Glass High swing band. DECEMBER 20... . Our basketball team made a good start tonight, defeating Lexington in our first game. Keep up the good work, Team. January 27 .. . . School daze—Those ‘things’ are here again—Examinations and then a new (and our last?) term. Aprit 2.... The highest honor a Senior can attain is to be one of the chosen few elected to membership in the National Honor Society. Today 51 of our “shining lights” were selected on the basis of character, scholarship, leadership, and service for this honor. Aprit 4.... The dramatic department has put on many fine performances this year, but the Senior play “The Mummy and the Mumps” tops them all. The illustrious cast of this comedy was made up of Sydnor Thompson, Margaret Dickinson, Helen Wagers, Irene Loftis, Preston Tanner, Jean Landrum, Zack Lindsey, Waiter Singleton, William Ferrell, and Dot Fourqurean. APRIL 23, 24, 25... . This year the music department, under the direction of Mr. Nicholas, has made exceedingly great progress. Besides the minstrel and several musical | assemblies, they have broadcast many times, a thing which ‘is new for them this year. But of course the really great undertaking was the opera. Three great performances were given of ‘“‘Floradora.” It was well received by enthusiastic audiences. A few among its talented cast were Zack Lindsey, Evelyn Morissette, Fay Evans, and Hamp Burnett. May 3.... The track team completed the season today by defeating Thomas Jefferson of Richmond. For the first time since 1936, the team went through the season unde- feated. Congratulations, boys. ; JuNE9....THE DAY! All good things must come to an end. Tonight we saw the largest class in the history of the school.graduate. It was a most beautiful and happy occasion. Well—it’s all over and it has been fun. Page Sixteen NIN ET. FOOTBALL 1940 E. C. Glass’s 1940 football team started its season off well by winning its first two non-conference games. It then went into a slump, however, and lost the first two conference games to the two teams from Richmond, one of which John Marshall High came out on top in the State Championship race. CapTaIN TORRENCE This did not seem to discourage them since they came back strong and won the next four straight games. Two of our star players, Captain “Deedy” Torrence and Bob Murray, made second and third All-State High School Teams, respectively, while several others received Honorable Mention. When Coach Everett issued his first call to track practice, he noted that, with the many veterans and newcomers out, the prospects for a good season were very bright. With Captain Billy Ligon leading them, they defeated the Clifton Forge team by a good margin. The following week-end a favored Durham, N. C., was defeated by the Hilltoppers. John Marshall of Richmond was the next team to fall, and the strong Jefferson High team from Roanoke fell victim the following week. Hargrave’s powerful team was defeated also and then, journeying to Richmond to defeat Thomas Jefferson, the Hill- toppers came through to complete their season undefeated. In the state meet at Charlottesville, they placed seventh, with Newport News winning for the fourth straight year. SCHEDULE-AND SCORES Clifton Forge .. Durham, N. C. Regardless of weather, they could be depended cn to be present at the various athletic events to encourage the home team to victory—Senior Day proved that. Besides leading cheers and songs at the games, they also lead pep meetings held in the auditorium on the day before each game. They constitute the upper 15% of the graduating class, chosen from the upper third in scholastic averages on a basis of scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Sydnor Thompson, whose average of 97.68 is the highest in the senior class, also holds the distinction of having the highest average in the history of the school. The purpose of this organization is to promote better scholarship, leadership, char- acter, and service among the students of the public schools of America. In connection with this idea, the E. C. Glass chapter coaches backward pupils every year in preparation for examinations. They also conducted a “Junior High Day” for the purpose of introducing prospective students to the school and this year helped to compile a student handbook, containing general information useful to the students of E. PAYNE The Student Council was organized this fall to foster democratic spirit throughout the school, to aid in training for citizenship, to build cooperation between faculty and students, and to improve school life generally. The Council is composed of two bodies: the Cabinet, which is made up of twelve leaders of various student organizations, and the Representative Group, which is made up of a representative from each home room. Among the projects the Council has undertaken this year are the placing of monitors in the cafeteria, yard, hall, infirmary, library, and auditorium and a hostess in the front hall each period. During January the Council sponsored a clean-up campaign at which time walls were painted, rooms were cleaned, and posters were placed in the halls to emphasize the importance of having a clean building. Though Student Government is still in its infancy, we feel sure by the progress it has made this year and of the spirit in which it was accepted it will continue. The club sent a large group of representatives to the fall conference at Roanoke, held supper meetings once a month, gave three large supper meetings once a month, gave three large dances, and did social work at Christmas and Thanksgiving. Since space would not permit additional classes in the high school building, school officials decided to hold the shop classes in the Monroe School. The classes organized at that time were electricity and machine shop; however, due to the heavy demand from industry, a class was organized in sheet metal work in the Spring semester, 1941. In order to qualify for either electricity, machine or sheet metal shop, a student must have passed his fourteenth birthday and have completed at least one year of high school work, must have reasonable general ability, some aptitude for the trade implied, and capacity for and willingness to work. The students spend one hour each day in mechanical drawing or related mathematics, two hours in shop and the balance of the day in academic subjects. All trade and industrial students receive one unit of credit upon completion of each semester’s work.
