Some are clear and deep cut. Others are faint and, sad to say, a few wander aimlessly. Markers point down the endless paths, pointing to science, een tO ag ceo f Sedan WR to art, to business . . . to some phase of service to mankind. © The youth, bewildered, pauses before he makes his choice; then, hopefully, deter- mined, chooses one of the paths and strides on. As author of the Federal Reserve Bill, Senator, Representative, and Secretary of the Treasury under Wilson—his way has always led to greater service to mankind. So in appreciation of his long and faithful service in state and national governmental bodies, we dedi- cate this 1938 Criric-Crest to Carter Glass, the “Gentleman from Virginia.” ® These polished halls have been trodden endlessly by every grad- uating class since the founding of the school in 1911. Now after three years of a glorious blend of work and play, the Class of ’38 now turns its footsteps “into the paths of higher education and broader experience that await the high school graduate. y 4 A Cosi: Py er, of == Sioa 4 What ea C Abigh ESE 100 Cc Principal wa ere Ee SPT, Pl fol é go Ne i a a SN = . They have carried on their work to the best of their ability and they leave behind their record of accom- plishment in the various phases of work as a challenge and standard for those who will follow in their footsteps. Pree CREP “CRE oe SENIOR CLASS Now that we Seniors have reached the summit of our high school career, we pause momentarily to look back upon our footsteps. Since we are now in a position to view the upward way asa whole, we see that each effort, however small, brought us gradually nearer our desired goal. We recall with pleasure the many ways in which we have extended the paths left for us by the former classes. The school has made exceptional progress this year in the work of the Music Department. This department presented Gilbert and Sullivan’s light opera, H. M.S. Pinafore, the first enterprise of its kind ever to have been undertaken by the high school students. This production was an outstanding success. The Spring Concert, featuring excerpts from the opera Carmen, provided wide experience for members of the Glee Club and Orchestra, as well as a superior type of entertainment for an appreciative audience. Dramatics played an important part in this year’s activities with the presentation of four plays, Green Stockings, Spring Fever, Young Smitty, and The Family Up Stairs. These plays comprised the most extensive program ever given in one session of the High School. Young Smitty, the annual presentation of the Senior Class, was received by an enthusiastic audience with overwhelming applause. The expression of enjoyment was well deserved by the talented cast. The school has accomplished much in its literar y pursuits, the publications having received many distinctions. The Critic was honored with the Silver Cup, the highest award given by; the South- ern Interscholastic Press Association, and was placed first at the conference of the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. The High Times was rated best in its class by the International Honor Rating of the Quill and Scroll. The paper also received first place at the Columbia Scholastic Press Association and first honorable mention from the Southern Interscholastic Press Association. Several members of the staffs of the various publications won prominence in literary contests. Moving picture equipment has been added to the teaching facilities of the school, and although certain other equipment will be needed before best use can be made of the motion picture in classrooms, it has proved a valuable means of supplementing class work. Athletics comprise a major part of this year’s activities. The senior class was rep- resented on all the teams and in all the sports. On the whole, we may say that the class represents a striking example of that educational ideal, “A sound mind in a sound body.” The highest honor a Senior can attain is to be one of the chosen few elected to membership in the National Honor Society. Forty-three Seniors were selected on the basis of character, scholarship, leadership, and service for this honor. Our high school days are now over. The experiences and training gained here taught us how to work out problems for ourselves, thus enabling us to see our way more clearly and to face the future with confidence in our ability to overcome what- ever obstacles life may present. Here, for many of us, our paths divide, but not one of us will, ever forget the happy days spent in high school. Each year the school is approaching nearer and nearer its goal of one hundred percent participation in its intra-mural athletics. This year, more than ever before, a larger number of stu- dents have taken part in this phase of extra- curricular activities. FOOTBALL With no more than average material to work with, Coaches Funk and Smith suc- ceeded in moulding a formidable football eleven by the day of the opening game. On the eve of the initial tilt with South Boston, the Hilltop prospects appeared bright for a successful season with Lynchburg’s all-state guard, James Burton Saunders, leading the way. As the season progressed the Hilltoppers were again hit hard by their old injury jinx. Billy Chipley and Billy McClintic, regular end and guard respectively, were both put on the sidelines for the remainder of the season in the game with Thomas Jefferson of Richmond. As the traditional classic with their arch-rivals, Roanoke, approached, the Funk- men had succeeded in winning only five out of nine games in a season marked bv colorful football. Having pointed for this game through the entire season, the Hill. top scored on a spectacular pass interception by guard Morris early in the game and defended their advantage brilliantly against their heavier rivals to win 6-0. al -_ jaa _— O 2 BASKETBALL Front row: Leslie Pugh, Myron Duncan, Billy Chipley, Leo Johnson, Harry Hill, Elmo Gooden Second row: James Saunders, Duval Deacon, Earl Shepherd, Frank Read, John Oglesby Third row: Ray Thacker, “Red” Houser, Ted McHaney Fourth row: Mr. McCue and Mr. Funk d Prospects for basketball were very bright at the beginning of the 1937-38 season when the Hilltoppers won their first five games. Included in this string of wins was a victory over the powerful Jefferson High team from Richmond. At this point in the season, the squad dropped two close games in a row, one to the V. M. I. frosh and one to Danville. Having lost two of its best players in Captain John Oglesby and “Red” Saunders, the team lost three more close ones in a row, including a return game with the V. M. I. frosh. They won easily from Lane High and Andrew Lewis, but lost again to Danville. In a return game with Lane High the Hilltop won its final victory, dropping the last two games of the season to Roanoke and Hargrave by large scores. Glass High led her opponents in total points scored, with 456 to 429. Individual high scorer was Leslie Pugh with 92 points, followed by Leo Johnson and John Oglesby. 4 eR BT TT AT NA I TS si ape Sd oe CHEER LEADERS Irma Madren Brian Bowen B Te Laura Graves Jimmy Cox Helen Travis RESUME OF BASKETBALL SEASON SOuUth @DOStON@e sacs A. commen Ss 12 LORS COMMER a ta oan cas ee as es BE 21 fF ae) OR ARICHINOUC.e) ce. nie eee 30 BL Arora VOM Nir. ite Aas ied ae ee 26 BN EICCOWG @ IEC WAS Merete ne, Pas) yarn 22 NW Vine pH OSH outta, @ksn hy Skee Ge 2o% Danville. =. ses ge Oe dhln ool See, 32 Hampden-Sydney Frosh .......... 28 etersomLitclis saehenec enone 35 VaeViw [os FcOstie on, ies. 6 oh eee p ) PAnealite Docc cee hc nen ee 13 (NOTE Wah Le Wi Seeman Sou Nig 2H Dargie came ee, cetie teT nan . . At the beginning of the 1938 track season, Coach Everette had high expectations of winning at least three meets out of five as he moulded together a fine team built around Captain Hundley Diffendal and Floyd McKenna, hold-overs from the 1937 squad. After the first meet with Thomas Jefferson High of Richmond, it was evident that the Hilltop needed more capable track and field men. In this meet the Everettemen took a majority of first places, but lost the meet by the hair-line margin of five points, as their opponents piled up much needed points, taking virtually all the second and third places. Coach Everette issued a call to all boys in school in order to get more material with which to work. In spite of added men and rigorous training, the Hilltop lost — two out of the three remaining meets by close margins. The sole victory came in the final meet of the season with Roanoke. In the state meet the following week the Hilltop scored five points as Hundley Diffendal out- sprinted all rivals in the hundred yard dash. Left to right: Mr. Smith, Lawrence White, Gibson Hooten, Leo Johnson, Charles Craddock, William Bullock, Frank Read, Sam Bibee, Newman Ogden, Walter Kelly, Jimmy Ould. The 1938 tennis season opened without the return of a single letter man. However there was an abundance of material, from which Mr. Smith, tennis coach, was able to round out a fairly formidable team. In the first meet of the season with Charlottes- ville, Glass won 7-0. In the second and third meets however, the squad, still green, lost by close scores to Danville and Roanoke respectively. In the state tennis meet, the Glass High doubles team, composed of Leo Johnson and Walter Kelly, managed to reach the finals but lost to a smooth-stroking Maury High combination. The first five players on the tennis squad this year were Leo Johnson, Walter Kelly, Lawrence White, Frank Read, and Charles Craddock. Glass High . Glass High . NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The greatest honor that can be bestowed upon a senior in Glass High School is membership in the National Honor Society—open once a year to only fifteen per cent of the graduation class. This fifteen per cent must rank in the upper third of a scholastic rating for the three years in high school besides possessing the outstanding qualities of leadership, service, and character. Excellent averages were made by five seniors. Carolyn Beardsworth with 96.95 attained the third highest mark ever recorded in N. H. S. history at Glass. Other averages above 95 are Helen McGehee, 96.46; Walter Evans, 96.32; Harold Thornhill, 96.17; Homer Johnson, 95.41. The election on March 10 came earlier than usual, allowed the society to organize and start its projects for the year. By a vote, members planned to coach pupils deficient in school work, put on an honor campaign, and transcribe records of Juniors from per- manent record cards for information on future members of the Honor Society. Two committees were appointed to further work. Ann Morrison, chairman of the program committee, had as assistants Carolyn Beardsworth, James Cox, and Sam Will- iams. Jean Drysdale, service committee chairman, was aided by Laura Graves, Buddy King, and David Scott. Membership in the National Honor Society, Glass High’s reward to students with excellent qualities, should be one of the prime aspirations of every Junior, Sophomore, and Freshman. Epwarp Lewis The Hi-Y Club completes this year probably the most successful term in its entire history. Its peak of success was reached through the efforts of the 82 members and the staff of officers working under the leadership of Mr. Lawson Driscoll, adult advisor. ORCHESTRA As in previous years, the orchestra played a very important part in school dramatic productions this past year. The orchestra this year was a prime factor in the success of the light opera, “H. M. S. Pinafore,” rehearsing long hours every afternoon to master the musical selections. In the Spring Concert, the E. C. Glass Orchestra com- bined with a well organized Junior High group, presented half the program and ac- companied the chorus in the production of the concertized version of “Carmen.” At school plays these musicians are always present, adding zest to the play and eliminating the usual dull moments of intermission. Under the efficient baton of Mr. R. L. Bierly, the orchestra helps to enliven the assembly programs. BAND ee The band has accomplished some real work this year, in spite of the fact that this year’s group is somewhat small in comparison with that of last year. Besides playing at all of the football games in Lynchburg, the group made one out of town trip to Danville. In connection with fall activities the band also participated in the Senior Day parade and the Municipal Christmas parade. In the spring the organization turned to a more important phase of its work—that cf attempting to master the compositions of such genii as Strauss, Grieg, Wagner, and others. The band opened Music Week by playing some of these masterpieces. Seven pupils work in the library during each period and before and after school. Under the supervision of the Librarian, Miss Norvell Craighill, the staff members rotate on their several duties and so learn to do every phase of the library work. There are also a treasurer, collector, messenger, and two typists. The Representatives of each home room bring the books to the library daily. The home room having the largest circulation receives a prize, offered by the library. The library houses six thousand volumes. Last year’s circulation was 32,168. The Department of Business Education, comprised exclusively of the school’s com- mercial students, endeavors to train pupils for life in the business world and enables them to choose a means of earning a profitable living. Thus, with an adequate busi- ness training, commercial graduates are given the opportunity to become the leaders of their communities and provide for their future welfare. In the fall of 1937, a campaign to raise funds for various needs of the school was organized by Mr. B. E. Isley. In cooperation with Mr. Mark Cole, a representative of the Crowell Publishing Company, he made it possible for students to offer more than thirty different kinds of magazines for sale. In the ensuing weeks, national records were broken. The school set a new all-time record for schools of all sizes, and Jean Butler set a record for individual sales. Miss Margaret Williams was the leader of the winning team, and her home room had the highest percentage of sales. Second was Mr. Grover Everett’s room; next was Miss Beulah Phipps’ room. The three highest individual salesmen were Jean Butler, Ann Craddock, second; and third, Buddy King. Home Stretch “Pinafore” Going up!
