Page 28 THE SCOTTY, GLASGOW, MONTANA GLASGOW HOOP SQUAD IN REVIEW HIGHLANDERS TAKE LONG SERIES OF WINS IN HEAVY SEASON. Straugh Picks Rangy Team The I938-39 Highlander team under Coach Bill Straugh came through for Glasgow, losing but two home games. V Ten good men were finally selected from the eligible students who reported. The Glasgow team varied in height this year all the way from 4 feet 6 inches to six feet 3 inches. Six of the I0 players were 6 feet tall or over. The height of the players did not conflict with the playing and ball handling ,ability of the team. They played hard and worked well together. They never said a game was in the bag, and if they were a little behind, they always came back in the second half with renewed vigor, many times to take the victory for Glasgow. The season was good enough for any team to be proud of. Of the 22 games played by Glasgow, only six were lost to the opposing teams and only one team, Poplar, remained undefeated by the Highlanders. The total score for Glasgow High for the season was 631 to the opponents' total score of 525. New Suits Attractive The Highlanders came on the floor in the initial game of the season with new suits. The suits consist of the colors, scarlet and white. The pants are scarlet jockey satin with white inserts and white satin belts. The jerseys are of the same color with large white numerals. The added feature of new socks and wh.ite knee guards com- pletes the ensemble of Glasgow High's suits. Later in the year Glasgow received new warm-up jackets of scar- let and white jockey satin. These suits and jerseys were taken to the tournament at Great Falls and Glasgow might well be proud to say that they looked as classy as any in the state. Great Falls Tournament Results Encouraged by a grand and inspiring pep assembly, Glasgow High went to Great Falls for the Northern dis- trict tournament, March 8, 9, I0 and II, to play off games with other teams to see who would represent the North a the state tournament at Billings. The Glasgow team played Havre in the first game and lost by a score of 35 to 23, which put them against Lewistown. The next game was played in the morning, Glasgow winning from Lewistown 31 to 2I. Thirty-two pep telegrams at half-time aided the Highlanders to their first tournament win since I935. This game winner was to play in the semi-finals with Missoula to determine who was to play for third and fourth the following evening. Although leading Missoula at half-time, Glasgow lost this game 34 to 23. Glasgow tied with Butte Central for fifth place in the Northern district tournament. Individual Records Out of the season's record the individual scores of the players were added up. These scores were taken out of the 22 games that were played before tournament. Turk Miller was high score man of the season with I 77 points to his credit. Next high was Jack Burgess with 92 points. Following were O. Wedum, D. Aitken and Harry Farrington, with 89, 79 and 7I, respectively. Four seniors-Miller, O. Wedum, Wedum and Lane -will be lost from the basketball squad this year. Turk Miller, acting captain and center of the Glasgow team, could always be depended upon for four to five baskets a game or more. He was selected by both Missoula and Glendive for the all-state second team chosen from the I6 class A schools. Otis Wedum is playing his last year at Glasgow as guard. Otis and Turk were elected as co-captains for this season by the team members. Otis played with Glas- gow three years and has always played a good and steady floor game. His scoring record this year is one of the best ever made from the guard position for Glasgow. Glasgow will undoubtedly always remember the game that George Lane put on ice. He went into the game, knocked off nine points, and stalled with the ball for a full minute and 45 seconds. He has a hidden formula for his tricky ball handling and dribbling which nobody but himself will know. Last, but by no means least of the seniors, comes Casanova Wedum-John Wedum by full name. Johnnie as forward, like 'his twin brother, Otis, is another dead eye for long shots. He is a quick, steady passer with three years experience with the team. The remaining members of the team are ,lack Burgess, Roy Christensen, David Aitken, Harry Farrington, Max Kirk and lack Montgomery. In all these players Glasgow should base its hopes for great things for the future. All in all, they should do great things for Glasgow's High- landers. A junior, Jack Burgess, one of the outstatnding players at the Class A tournament, is to be back with us again next year. The managers were Mark Etchart and Carroll Brant. A final highlight of the season was the Jaycee banquet, March 30, in honor of the team. The boys back for next year hope it is an annual affair. Second Team Has Good Record The Glasgow second team this year, under Warren Hanna, won five out of the six games played. On the second team we find new members who are unsung, but who will be heard of plenty by the time they are seniors. They are G. Schwenke, R. Thill, Moe, Vallandigham, R. Svingen, R. Montgomery, McPherson, D. Burgess, Covey, I... Pattison and Humphries. The scores of their games CContinued on Page 30.1
