Left to right: Gien Schwenke David Aitken Leo Pattison George Humphries Wayne Covey Not pictured: Harry Farrington BASKETBALL SEASON -1939-40 The turnout for the I939-40 squad included only three lettermen, Kirk, Aitken and Chris- tiansen, reserves from the i938-39 squad. A schedule of Zl games was arranged, including ten class A engagements, in order to overcome the handicap of inexperience. The hopes of the team received a blow when 'Kirk was lost for the season with a broken arm in the Wolf Point game, january 20. However, aggressive spirit and persistent practice overcame inexperience and misfortune. The Highlanders rose up to defeat Havre on january 27, which team later won every title attainable by a class MA team in the Northern Division. With Farrington in the lineup, Glasgow won over Lewistown 32-I 3 on March 2 in their last home game of the regular schedule. They won 5 and lost 5 home games- 3 wins against 2 defeats from class A visitors. ln the Northern Division class A tournament at Great Falls, Glasgow proved to be the most underrated team, losing to Missoula by a close score. fBurgess was the Spartan's best., The High- landers next defeated Butte Central 35-29. This is the first time for Glasgow to place in the tournament since l935. Aitken was high point man of the tournament with 53 points. Kuka of Havre was second with 48, and Farrington third with

Grand performances were turned in ThiII and Svingen at the guard positions in their first tourna- ment experience. Captain Christiansen presented the beautiful trophy to IVIr. Irle, for the school, at an assembly foIIowing the team's return from Great FaIIs. The game with the Allen Cafe team for the benefit of the athletic fund, an over-time affair won by Farringtonis field goaI, was the Iast appearance for Christiansen, Aitken and Schwenke. Letters were awarded to Kirk, Aitken, Christiansen, Schwenke, ThiII, Moe, Farrington, Humphries, Svingen, Bundy, Covey and Manager Newton. Four of the seven returning Iettermen, Farrington, ThiII, Svingen and Covey have had first team experience. In addition to the foIIowing three Iettermen-Humphries, Moe and Bundy-are Pat- tison and Jondahl from the squad. Also, the I940 prospects are enhanced by some promising freshmen and eighth graders. The boys and coach were honored at a banquet by the junior Chamber of Commerce Wednes- day, March 20 -a fitting cIose to the I-IighIancIer's most successful season.
