Through the entirety of the pages of this book, we have endeavored to show our state, Texas, under six flags: France, Spain, Mexico, Texas, Confederate, and the United'States. The Spaniards began the exploration of Texas only twenty-seven years after Columbus landed on San Salvador. But the Frenchman, LaSalle founded the first settlement on the shore of Matagorda Bay in l685. But the Spaniards continued to explore and in l69l Texas became a providence of Spain. Mexico gained its independence from Spain in I82l, and Texas became a part ofthe Republic of Mexico. In l82'0, Moses Austin gained permission from Spain to start a colony and by'l830, Mexico had halted the immigration of the Americans. When Santa Anna overthrew the Mexican government, the Texans revolted and on March 2, l836, they issued a Declaration of Indepen- dence. In i845 Texas was admitted to the Union, but sececled in I86I, to becomea Confederate stare. In I870, Texas was readmitted to the Union. Texas was named after a tribe of Indians, the Teias, meaning friendly, The motto of Texas is Friendship , The state seal is a circle within a circle. There is a five pointed star surrounded by branches of live oak and olive, which stands for strength and peace. The state bird is a Mockingbird, and the flower, the Bluebonnet. Since Alaska became a state, Texas is no longer the largest. im actual land area, but every Texan knows that she is still, as the song Texas, our Texas says, The grandest, withstanding every test. Empire wide and glorious, You stand supremely blessed! Goal bless you Texas and keep you brave and strong, that you may grow in power and worth, throughout the ages long. O ..- 3
